Surprising Body Facts Doctors Want You To Know
"Ejaculating blood happens to most people at least once in their lives. In 99% of cases, it resolves within a week without taking any action. Peeing blood (for both sexes) is a serious medical emergency, and you should immediately go to the ER. People think it's the other way around."
"Administering CPR compressions ASAP is one of the greatest indicators of successful outcomes."
"Your kidneys and liver cheerfully do all the toxin elimination you'll ever need. Cleanses and other 'detoxifying' products are bullshit and a waste of money."
"So many people don't know where the orifice each gender urinates through really is. Urine exits the body of people with vaginas through the urethra, a small tube located in the vulva, between the clitoris and the vaginal opening. In people with penises, the urethra passes through the prostate gland and the penis, and opens at the tip of the penis.
"Please do not use soap or douching products inside your vagina. It has a delicate pH balance, and this is how you get yeast infections. Wash your labia, but do not clean internally. The vagina is self-cleaning just like your eyeballs. Do you wash your eyeballs? No. Do you wash your face? Yes."
"You often will feel normal with high blood pressure. It's often found incidentally. So, don't wait until it gives you symptoms you don't want to go through. To figure out if you're asymptomatic, get checked at least once a year if you're over 35 years old."
"Mental health IS AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH. A mental illness can kill you, just like a physical illness. And no, you can't 'snap out of it.' News flash, parents: This includes gender dysphoria. For fuck's sake, if your kids are trans, let them be themselves."
"The immune system is an incredibly complex and nuanced organization of cells that communicates readily to destroy anything deemed hostile within the body. It helps explain why vaccines are supposed to work, why allergies come and go, and why transfusions/transplants are hard to successfully pull off."
"I'm a dentist. If you don't take care of your gums, your teeth will fall out of your head, and you'll get pissed at me when your jawbone atrophies and your denture doesn't fit anymore. Essentially, periodontitis causes inflammation and recession of the gums, which in turn causes inflammation and recession of the bone. After that, teeth start getting mobile and falling out."
"How to self-check for skin cancer: If you see any moles that are asymmetrical, have a border (odd, like they're jagged), are different colors, grow in diameter, or evolve, go get them checked out. It might be skin cancer."
"GET SLEEP! Psychosis can happen if someone hasn't slept or hasn't had good sleep for extended periods of time. AND DON'T JUST RANDOMLY STOP YOUR MEDICATION BECAUSE YOU FEEL BETTER. You feel better because you have a consistent amount of whatever is leveled in your body now. And now that your body is hitting equilibrium, everything is going great, so KEEP DOING WHAT YOU'RE DOING. I've seen people go on and off their medications for years, and it really starts to mess up your body if you do that for too long."
"The frequency of bowel movements can range from every three days to three times per day and be considered normal. Having three soft stools per day does not mean you have chronic diarrhea."
"Type 2 diabetes is more serious than most people realize. I work as a doctor in hemodialysis, and most of them are due to diabetic nephropathy. It also affects your eyes, nerves, immune system, etc. Simple life changes can help you."
"The colon is, in general, air-tight. Therefore, your dildo ALWAYS needs a flared base. Once it gets up past the point that I can grab it out, it's vacuum sealed in."
"I'm a vet. Amputated limbs do not grow back. I've had far too many people asking how long it will take for their pet's amputated limb to grow back, so I'm assuming a few doctors out there will have had patients asking the same of their own missing limbs."
"Earwax is normal. You shouldn't try to remove it. People cause all sorts of problems with Q-tips and (god forbid) ear candles. They don't work and can cause you harm. If you genuinely need wax removed, go to a professional."
"Many simpler diseases in the body can be compared to a car. When you don't get regular checkups and take regular care, it's not like you'll notice something bad happening right away. Just like how you won't notice a missed oil change a couple of thousand miles later. But diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, alcohol dependence, etc., sneak up on you. Just like how eventually, that engine won't run as smoothly."
"Period blood doesn't come from the egg itself, but from the shedding of the uterus lining. I have talked to way too many people who believe that the blood comes from the egg itself, and I just think it goes to show how much the sex ed program needs to be modified."
"Injuries accumulate. I cannot stress this enough. Little kids have no business lifting heavy weights or getting pushed so hard in sports by some of these 'coaches' who seem to have little knowledge of physiology or don't care about the long-term impact of the regimens. Stuff like this really changes people's lives."
"You can't EVER get teeth enamel back."
"That there is a wide range of 'normal'. Don't be embarrassed by your body. Having said that, if you are concerned about anything, ask your doctor. We have generally heard it all before, and trust me, we have (nearly always) seen it all before. Maybe you have something that has been bothering you for ages, but you were too scared or embarrassed to ask about it...Just ask! It might be 'nothing' and you have been stressing about it for no reason. If not, then you are at least one step closer to getting it fixed. No one can help if they don't know. There are no dumb questions. YOU know your body best. So speak up! Don't wait for the doctor to 'ask the right question.'"
"Smoking is one of the absolute worst things you can do for your body. It is a risk factor for almost every preventable disease, including heart disease and heart attacks, strokes, almost every type of cancer, diabetes, COPD, kidney disease, macular degeneration (blindness), and so much more. I know quitting smoking is hard, but please give it a try, for your body's sake!"
"Your body needs water. DRINK IT."
And lastly: "You only have ONE body and your behavior now (drinking, smoking, not taking medicines, etc.) will impact your life quality and expectancy. It sounds logical, but very few patients really realize it."

This Future Retiree Plans To Downsize His $1M Home To Cover Health Insurance — Is It A Smart Move?
Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. As retirement approaches, one of the biggest unknowns many Americans face is how to pay for health insurance before Medicare kicks in at age 65. One future retiree recently shared his strategy online: sell his $1 million home, downsize to a smaller, less expensive property, and use the equity to bridge the gap until he qualifies for Medicare. It's a move some have considered — but is it a good idea? Trading Square Footage for Subsidies Posting to the r/retirement subreddit, the 60-year-old homeowner explained that he and his wife plan to retire in a few years. Their house is paid off and valued at around $1 million. With grown children and 3,000 square feet of space, they feel ready to downsize. The plan is to sell the current home and buy a $300,000 to $400,000 replacement. Don't Miss: Be part of the breakthrough that could replace plastic as we know it— $100k+ in investable assets? – no cost, no obligation. The equity from the sale would be used for living expenses, with a specific goal: keeping their Modified Adjusted Gross Income low enough to qualify for Affordable Care Act subsidies. This would help offset the cost of health insurance until they become eligible for Medicare at 65. Several Reddit users responded with encouragement — and caution. The Cost of Healthcare Before Medicare Healthcare expenses can be a major burden for early retirees. According to the Milliman 2024 Retiree Health Cost Index, someone retiring at 60 instead of 65 can expect to spend 56% to 89% more on healthcare over their lifetime, depending on the plan they choose. The earlier you retire, the more years you must cover before Medicare, often at a higher out-of-pocket cost. Some Reddit users suggested exploring the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, or COBRA. This program allows individuals to continue their employer's health insurance for up to 18 months. One retiree said it cost them $750 a month — cheaper than ACA options at the time. But for someone retiring at 60, COBRA wouldn't cover the full five-year gap. Trending: This AI-Powered Trading Platform Has 5,000+ Users, 27 Pending Patents, and a $43.97M Valuation — Risks of Relying on Home Equity Selling a home to unlock cash might offer flexibility — but it comes with trade-offs. Once the home is sold, that equity is no longer growing, and there's no guarantee the market will stay favorable if the retiree needs to sell quickly. Another consideration: capital gains tax. The Reddit poster said they bought the home for $490,000. If they sell it for $1 million, they'll be close to the $500,000 capital gains exemption for married couples. But with selling costs and home improvements factored in, they may still owe tax if the gain exceeds the limit. Reddit users also warned about downsizing regret. Some retirees have moved, only to later wish they had stayed in place — and found it difficult or expensive to reverse at the Bigger Picture While downsizing could reduce living costs, relying too heavily on that equity could be risky. With only 1–2 years of living expenses in a Roth IRA, the couple's ability to weather changes — like a drop in home values or rising insurance premiums — may be limited. That's why several commenters emphasized the importance of professional advice. As one noted, income, savings, and expenses are all different — and managing them requires careful planning. By exploring multiple options, testing assumptions, and working with a financial planner, future retirees like this one can build a plan that works — without putting their long-term stability at risk. I'm over 40 and swear by this lip contour balm to minimize upper lip lines
My skin care regimen is fairly extensive because I use a variety of different serums, balms and creams to target various skin woes. While I've seen noticeable differences in everything from dark spots and skin texture to fine lines, nothing ever seemed to help the perioral lines on my top lip, also known as 'smoker lines.' That is, until I discovered Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm. I dabbled with smoking in my early 20s, but I would never call myself a former smoker. So, you can imagine my surprise when I started to develop these 'smoker lines' in my mid-30s. Unfortunately, these fine lines have been very stubborn to treat, and there aren't a lot of affordable options out there that target this area — unlike eye creams, for example, which are a dime a dozen. And believe me, I've tried so many beauty products that claim to treat this area. But I couldn't find an affordable option until a Reddit search introduced me to this Clarins lip balm. Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm This lip contour balm isn't sticky, absorbs easily and will make your lips soft and supple. But what I really loved about it is its ability to diminish the appearance of my perioral lines after a few weeks of regular use. It's made with shea butter to protect lips and raspberry oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E. Although it's not cheap at $49 for a jar, it lasts for a long time, even with slathering this on several times a day. I smooth it a little above the lip as well as over my mouth so it really reaches the lip contours and smooths them out. On top of that, my lips feel so moisturized — and dare I say, look a little fuller? The balm doesn't feel sticky and absorbs into my lips while still giving them some shine. It took about three weeks of regular use before I saw a reduction in my lip lines, but they felt and looked softer after only a few days. When I asked Dr. Brian Hibler of Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York why it's so hard to treat these fine lines, he said that it all comes down to collagen and elastin loss from UV damage and aging, along with muscle crunching. Dehydration can be another factor as well. 'The intensity of the lines are partially related to the number of times and how hard the muscle around the mouth is flexed,' he added. 'Over time, this repetitive movement causes these lines to become etched in, even at rest.' To mitigate the lines in this area, he said to use a daily sunscreen, topical retinoids at night and a hydrating moisturizer. Since this Clarins balm is made with shea butter to protect lips and raspberry oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin E, it is very effective at hydrating that area. Hibler also said that Botox can help relax these muscles if treated early enough, but I draw the line at getting Botox anywhere other than my forehead. And besides, it sounds like I am already too late for this anyway. You really need to stick with this balm. As I mentioned, I noticed the effects after applying it several times a day for a few weeks, and even then, it reduced the appearance of my lip lines but did not erase them completely. Unfortunately, it will take something more expensive or invasive to truly eliminate these lines. I also saw some reviews complaining about the application process and how the balm can get stuck under your nails. I don't have long fingernails, so I don't have that problem, but I understand how that would be frustrating for someone who does. It's definitely not the most user-friendly packaging, but it certainly isn't a deal breaker by any means. This may not work for everyone, but it was effective for me in improving my lip contour lines. I saw many online reviews echoing my thoughts, provided you treat them early enough. Yes, $49 is a lot to pay for lip balm, but as previously mentioned, this will last a long time. Plus, there are not a lot of treatment options to target these perioral lines. 'Microneedling and non-ablative laser treatments like Fraxel can be helpful to stimulate collagen induction and smooth the skin in this area,' Hibler said, but professional treatments like those are incredibly pricey. So, while I won't get the same results as a laser treatment (nor do I expect to) by using an over-the-counter product, anything that improves my lines even a little bit is a win win for me. And for under $50, Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm is the answer to my prayers (for now). The following FAQs were answered by board-certified cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Brian Hibler and includes reporting by managing editor Rachel Quigley. How do you use Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm? How do you use Clarins Extra-Firming Lip and Contour Balm? Apply it on your lips and above your upper lip several times a day with your finger. What causes upper lip lines? What causes upper lip lines? According to Hibler, 'Upper lip lines are caused by a variety of genetic, environmental and behavioral factors. Sometimes referred to as 'smoker's lines', these lines around the mouth are often seen in nonsmokers.' He also said that daily activities like drinking through a straw or making certain facial expressions can contribute to the development of these lines. 'Over time, this repetitive muscle movement causes the lines to etch into the skin, similar to those between the eyebrows ('eleven lines' or glabellar lines) and around the eyes (crow's feet).' UV damage, natural loss of collagen and elastin over time, and not drinking enough water can also make the lines worse. Over 23,000 Are Floored By This Text About A MAGA Voter Who Supported Cutting Medicaid... Until He Realized His Children Use It
As you likely know, Donald Trump signed his One Big, Beautiful Bill into law earlier this month, which includes major reductions in federal support for Medicaid. Ultimately, as reported by NPR, this will lead to about 12 million more people being without health insurance by 2034. It doesn't take much brain power to understand why that would be a very, very bad thing. Related: 24 Very, Very, Very, Very Disturbing Facts That Are Seriously So Intense, I'm 99% Sure They're About To Break Your Brain Regardless, some people still struggle with the concept. One such person is the focus of this text exchange that recently went viral on Reddit: In a retelling of a recent conversation between their brother and themself, this texter wrote, "I mentioned in the family chat that 300,000 kids in Iowa are on Medicaid - they will all lose coverage." "My brother is like: well it least it's not touching Hawk-i, that's what my kids are on," they continued. For those outside of Iowa, the state's Medicaid and children's health insurance program is largely known by its nickname: Healthy and Well-Kids in Iowa or... hawk-i. So, upon learning his children's healthcare is in jeopardy, the brother responds with, "What? They better not." Related: 44 Jaw-Droppingly Selfish, Entitled Humans Who Clearly Think The World Revolves Around Them This is all made worse by the fact that the brother, apparently, has been a big proponent of cutting Medicaid. "Dude has been banging the drum for this stupid spending bill for weeks and didn't even realize he was rooting for his own kids losing their insurance," the texter concludes. Mining through the nearly 1,500 comments, a common frustration came from those who have seen stories of people voting against their own interests too many times before. "It's the same thing with people who love the Affordable Care Act, [but] hate 'Obamacare,' and didn't spend the five seconds required to realize that they're the same thing," user Successful_Jelly_213 wrote. Others questioned the brother's morality and wondered aloud why he was OK with children losing their health insurance (as long as they weren't his kids). "So just to clarify, he's good with the other 300,000 kids losing their healthcare, just not his own kids," Sharpymarkr posed. The whole thing was about himself," Prosthemadera agreed. "Whether someone else's family will suffer, how many people will die, he doesn't give a shit." "If your first response to cutting healthcare is 'I'm not affected,' then you're just not a good person, and that doesn't change just because you suddenly care to be against it once you find out you are actually affected. You're just being a selfish, self-centered asshole who will vote Republican again next time because this was never about making the world better." Additionally, "I'm 57 years old, no children, not religious. I have never taken a dime in Medicaid, food stamps, Section 8, or any public programs. I've never even filed for unemployment. But I want my tax dollars to help that guy's kids get healthcare and schooling, and housing. Guess I'm a libtard," weenie2323 said. Elsewhere in the comments, people shared similar stories of dealing with their own MAGA family members: Related: 15 Men Who Tried To "Educate" Women About Their Own Bodies And Failed So, So Miserably "This is my mom," cheongyanggochu-vibe said. "My disabled brother is on Medicaid, which is supplemented by her state. She thinks that because he gets it from the state, he will be fine (even though the funds are majority federal)." "When he gets axed, she will blame her Democratic governor and lawmakers because she doesn't realize how profoundly she benefits from being in a blue state she hates the leaders of." "A colleague of mine lives in Utah, and he meets the threshold for Medicaid; everything is covered. I asked him, 'Say, aren't you worried about this bill working its way through Congress? You could lose your healthcare.' He said, 'What, no, that's for waste fraud and abuse, I'm on the state health care, not Medicaid.'" "I said, 'Uhh, that IS Medicaid, they just don't call it that because of the political stigma.' Absolute deadpan silence," BeautifulTall7833 said. Overall, little sympathy was expressed. "I hope cutting his own child's healthcare was worth it," WeirdProudAndHungry said. "Medicaid literally saved my life. Fuck these people," MidnightNo1766 added. What are your thoughts?
