The victim, identified only as Chan, 47, encountered the advertisement on March 26, which promised high returns.
Chan contacted a person named Linda via WhatsApp, who claimed to be an investment intermediary.
'The investment seemed legitimate as I was instructed to download the 'Citi CDT' App from the Apple Store. The app was verified, so I invested RM10,000 the same day,' he said during a press conference at the Perak MCA Building.
Between April 2 and April 28, Chan made five more transfers via online banking, cash deposit machines, and over-the-counter transactions to four different bank accounts.
Later, he was told he would receive RM1.7 million in returns—but only after paying an additional RM190,472.40 to 'release' the profits.
'After consulting friends, I realised I had been scammed and lodged a police report at Sungai Senam police station,' he said.
Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Yuen Chan How urged authorities to investigate thoroughly.
'Syndicates now create legitimate-looking apps downloadable from official stores. Always verify before investing—no genuine scheme demands payment to withdraw profits,' he warned. – Bernama

Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were detained under Ops Vulture in separate raids. The first suspect was apprehended on Wednesday (July 23) in Pasir Tumboh, Kubang Kerian, while the other four were arrested on Friday following a red paint incident in Pasir Hor. Police also seized 34 items believed to have been used in these activities, including red paint, threatening notes, clothing, face masks, mobile phones, and motorcycles. "Preliminary investigations revealed that all five suspects are believed to be linked to at least nine cases of property damage in Kota Baru, Tumpat, and Tanah Merah. "Their actions included breaking window panes with stones, pasting threatening notes, and padlocking borrowers' gates as a form of intimidation," he said in a statement on Sunday night. Mohd Yusoff said the case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Sections 427/506 of the Penal Code. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule.
