Just hours after the revocation announcement, at least
five Hong Kong universities have signalled their interest in welcoming these students. The question is, will they be enticed to come to Hong Kong?
What we need is a targeted marketing strategy that can meet the needs and priorities of these students. Harvard students are among the world's academic elite – the crème de la crème. A mere unconditional offer may not be enough to attract them. Likewise, run-of-the-mill scholarships are unlikely to sway this financially capable cohort.

However, where Hong Kong universities may have a distinct advantage is in catering to the research aspirations of the graduate students among them. For those pursuing advanced degrees such as a Master of Philosophy or PhD, publishing in top academic journals is a critical benchmark of success. Hence, having an established and well-connected supervisor can help these students navigate the rigorous publication process. This symbiotic dynamic between student and supervisor is a major draw for scholars seeking the finest mentorship and professional networks.

Last month, Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te embarked on the first of his '10 lectures on unity' , claiming Taiwan had never been a part of the People's Republic of China – and that the People's Republic of China government 'never ruled Taiwan'. This plainly disregards the facts and is self-deceiving rhetoric. Advertisement Since 1949 – and especially since 1971 – the Chinese government has exercised sovereign power over Taiwan politically and militarily, directly and indirectly, affirmatively and negatively. As the sole legitimate Chinese government widely recognised by the international community, Beijing is consulted and its opinions are respected by the United Nations and all countries concerned when it comes to affairs involving Taiwan. For a start, Taiwan's authorities are denied sovereign participation in the United Nations and other international organisations. Their participation in organisations such as the World Trade Organization, International Olympic Committee, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum and Asian Development Bank is permitted only with China's consent and under appropriate formal designations, such as 'Chinese Taipei' and the 'separate customs territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu'. And its scope of participation is limited to non-political fields such as societal, economic and cultural. This is a direct manifestation of China's representative power over Taiwan and the one-China principle. Second, China does not allow any country it has diplomatic relations with to develop official ties with Taiwan's authorities. For these 183 countries , any dealings with Taiwan can only be of an unofficial, regional and civilian nature, in accordance with Beijing's stance. Any act of interference with Taiwan, for instance by selling it weapons or forming any kind of military alliance with it, is firmly opposed Advertisement Third, the Chinese government safeguards the safety, legitimate rights and interests of Taiwanese abroad. Notably, Chinese diplomatic missions provide equal protection to both mainlanders and Taiwanese.

Representatives from Beijing and Washington signaled further talks were likely following a round of negotiations in Stockholm. But a top US trade official stressed that President Donald Trump would make any "final call." Meanwhile investors digested several significant earnings reports, as well as merger announcements in the rail and energy sectors ahead of major economic news catalysts later in the week. "After reaching all time highs, markets are going to take a wait and see attitude," said Art Hogan of B Riley Wealth Management. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 0.5 percent at 44,632. The broad-based S&P 500 shed 0.3 percent to 6,370, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index declined 0.4 percent to 21,098. Both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq had finished at records on Monday. Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers described Tuesday's activity as a "little bit of position squaring ahead of a potentially very volatile few days." Besides earnings from Apple, Facebook parent Meta and other tech giants, markets will absorb a Federal Reserve interest rate decision. The central bank is expected to keep rates unchanged, but could hint that an interest rate cut will be more likely in September. Photo: Reuters Chinese and US officials have agreed to seek an extension of their 90-day tariff truce, after the latest two-day round of talks to reach a trade deal ahead of an August 12 deadline. China's international trade representative Li Chenggang said the talks in Stockholm were "candid, in-depth, constructive", according to the Xinhua News Agency. The two countries exchanged views on major trade and economic concerns, Li said, and are due to maintain close communications. Xinhua also quoted Vice Premier He Lifeng as saying that the United States should work with China to continue to enhance consensus, reduce misunderstandings, strengthen cooperation, further deepen dialogue and consultations, and strive for more win-win outcomes. A stable, healthy and sustainable China-US economic and trade relationship serves not only the two countries' respective development goals but also contributes to global economic growth and stability, He said. US officials, meanwhile, said it was up to President Donald Trump to decide whether to extend a trade truce that expires on August 12 or potentially let tariffs shoot back up to triple-digit figures. But US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent tamped down any expectation of Trump rejecting the extension. "The meetings were very constructive," Bessent told reporters after the meetings wrapped up. "It's just that we haven't given the signoff." As Trump returned to Washington after visiting Scotland, where he inked a trade deal with the European Union, he said Bessent had just briefed him on the China talks. "He felt very good about the meeting, better than he felt yesterday," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. Bessent said there would likely be another meeting between the two sides in about 90 days, and the agreements on the flow of Chinese rare earths were becoming more refined after previous talks in Geneva and London. "There was good personal interaction being built up, good, mutual respect. I think we understand their agenda much better," he said. The truce between China and the United States, the world's two largest economies, has temporarily set US duties on Chinese goods at 30 percent, and Chinese levies on US ones at 10 percent. That accord, reached in Geneva in May, brought down the tariffs each side had levelled at the other after Trump embarked on his trade war. (Agencies)
