Swiatek slams 'intense' calendar as players feel the grind to protect rankings
Iga Swiatek criticised the relentless tennis calendar on Sunday, with the former world number one saying that players should not be forced to compete in more than 20 tournaments a year to maintain their rankings.
Now ranked fourth in the world, Swiatek described being trapped in a system where she had to choose between representing her country and focusing on herself after she reluctantly skipped Poland's Billie Jean King Cup qualifier in April.
The 11-month grind has been one of the cornerstones of the lawsuit filed by the Professional Tennis Players' Association (PTPA) against the sport's governing bodies in March after the union described it as 'unsustainable'.
"The scheduling is super intense, it's too intense. There's no point for us to play over 20 tournaments in a year," Swiatek told reporters when asked about the biggest challenge to players in terms of mental health.
"Sometimes we need to sacrifice playing for your country because we need to keep up with playing these WTA 500s, for example, because we're going to get a zero in the ranking.
"I think these kind of obligations and the rules about mandatory tournaments just put pressure on us... I think people would still watch tennis, maybe even more, if we played less tournaments. The quality would be better."
Swiatek is the eighth seed at Wimbledon this year and she faces Polina Kudermetova in the first round on Tuesday.
The claycourt specialist with four French Open crowns fell in the semi-finals at Roland Garros this year and she quickly switched her focus to grass which has historically been her weakest surface.
She reached her first grasscourt final on Saturday at the Bad Homburg Open where she was left in tears after losing to top seed Jessica Pegula, but Swiatek is happy with her improvement on grass as she comes to grips with the faster surface.
"It's not like a huge change. It's not like 180 degrees change. I wouldn't say now suddenly everything is perfect, because it's still a difficult surface. It's still tricky," Swiatek said.

England deliver statement 7-0 win over Jamaica in final Euro warm-up
LEICESTER, England :England issued a statement of intent ahead of the Women's European Championship, demolishing Jamaica 7–0 at home in their final pre-tournament friendly on Sunday. The reigning European champions dominated from start to finish and although Jamaica had an equaliser ruled out for offside, Sarina Wiegman's side controlled the match, pushing to settle the game before halftime. Ella Toone opened the scoring, followed by a headed goal from Lucy Bronze, before Toone again scored deep into first-half stoppage time at Leicester's King Power Stadium. The onslaught continued after the interval, with Georgia Stanway adding England's fourth just before the hour mark, followed by Alessia Russo making it five in the 71st minute. With five minutes to go, Aggie Beever-Jones added the sixth before Beth Mead capped the rout with a seventh in the dying moments. "We enjoyed that game today. A lot of goals and a clean sheet. It's nice to send ourselves off to the Euros," Toone told ITV. "We've got a talented squad and we'll step out and give the nation our all." Wiegman said her side had produced a "good performance". "We expected to be in the final third a lot so we wanted to show what we could do," she said. "It was nice to score seven goals though there were times when we played an extra pass. Overall I'm really happy with the performance." England begin their Group D campaign against France on July 5, followed by games against Netherlands and Wales. The tournament runs from July 2-27.

Norris showed his character after Canada, says Stella
SPIELBERG, Austria :McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris's character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still needed "to polish a few things" to become the finished article, however, in a Formula One season that is turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. "The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgement. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella. "The speed is there - Lando pole position in Monaco... he was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. "We just have to polish a few things in executions and results which is what Lando demonstrated today. So, very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger." The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag following a near collision. "There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella. "We gave Oscar this feedback and I want to acknowledge that I am proud of Oscar. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. "I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and even more united." Norris's win cut the gap to Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season but Stella expects him to rectify that. "In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said. "There is absolutely no reason why not - the talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in.
