NATO Chief Weighs In on Military Conscription Across Europe

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Each European country will decide independently on whether to introduce military conscription, NATO's secretary-general has said, as the continent forges ahead with its rapid defense ramp up. Why It Matters NATO's European members, plus Canada, are in the middle of a massive defense push, reinvesting in their military after years of leaning heavily on the United States. America has tens of thousands of troops and a host of major bases in Europe, but President Donald Trump—a vociferous NATO skeptic—has demanded that alliance members commit to spending 5 percent of GDP on defense. Many had struggled to hit the 2 percent NATO target as Trump took office. But the alliance inked a pledge in June to reach Trump's figure of 5 percent, a huge leap in military spending for most NATO countries. AP Photo/Alex Brandon What To Know It is "up to individual countries to decide" whether to put conscription in place, NATO chief Mark Rutte told The New York Times. "Some countries will do it," Rutte said, speaking shortly after the NATO summit in The Hague in late June. "Others will not do it, but it will mean, in general, paying good salaries for our men and women in uniform." Several NATO countries in Europe already have different models of conscription, the need felt much more keenly on the alliance's eastern flank, staring down Russia. The nations with conscription typically also emphasize making sure their societies are ready for war, including by issuing public guides on how to cope during conflict. The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, which have stormed ahead in raising defense spending, all have conscription, as do several of the Nordic countries. Turkey and Greece also have conscription. Other countries, like the U.K., have militaries solely made up of volunteer professional soldiers. In Finland, which joined NATO shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, men must complete mandatory military service before heading into the reserve force. Finland shares hundreds of miles of border with Russia. Sweden, which also became a NATO member after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine, reinstituted conscription in 2017. Conscripts train with the Swedish military, and are put into a wartime unit to join if the government activates mobilization or high alerts. In Norway, conscription is obligatory yet very selective, applying to men and women. Denmark recently changed its laws on conscription, meaning women must also present themselves to be assessed for military service as they turn 18. Women previously joined the military purely on a volunteer basis. Rutte said he was "particularly worried" about Europe's ability to roll out large amounts of military equipment. Russia is "on a war footing in every sense," Rutte said, adding: "The size of the military, what they're investing in, in their tanks, in air defense systems, in their artillery, in ammunition—it is amazing." Rutte said during the NATO summit that the alliance will invest in a "five-fold increase" in air defense capabilities, as well as "thousands more tanks and armored vehicles" and millions of artillery rounds. What People Are Saying NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said: "We simply lack the defense industrial base to produce the weapons we need to make sure that we can deter the Russians or the North Koreans or whoever to attack us."

Europe's Largest Tunnel to Have Three Lanes of Highways For Cars

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Construction enabling works for the Lower Thames Crossing, set to become the largest tunnel in Europe, has been scheduled to begin in late 2025. The 2.6-mile tunnel beneath the River Thames, greenlit by National Highways after years of delay, carries an estimated budget of £9-10 billion (approx. $12-$14 billion USD) and aims for road opening in 2032. Newsweek contacted the Bouygues-Murphy joint venture managing the construction of the tunnel for more information on the process via email. Why It Matters The Lower Thames Crossing is the UK's most ambitious road tunneling plan in decades and would dramatically expand connectivity between Kent and Essex. Its planned three-lane highway tunnel, measuring 53 feet in diameter, would be the widest in Europe. The project responds to chronic congestion at the Dartford Crossing, which currently serves as the only road tunnel across the Thames east of London. What to Know The development consent order for the Lower Thames Crossing was granted on March 25, 2025, following years of procedural delays. The preliminary phase of construction includes substantial soil treatment and complex ground preparation at the north portal, where construction of the launch structure for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) is intended to begin in autumn 2026. The TBM launch is planned for spring 2028, targeting project completion and road opening by 2032. A rendering of the Lower Thames Crossing in England, which would be the widest tunnel in Europe if completed. Bouygues-Murphy The central tunnel's three-lane design is notable for a unique underdeck systems arrangement. The tunnel will traverse multiple difficult subsoil layers: a surface of historical and active landfill materials, including spoil from London tunneling projects and decades-old power station fly ash, a thick layer of alluvium composed of silts, clays, and peat, and, finally, highly variable chalk. Alan Price, technical director of the Bouygues-Murphy joint venture, described the area as "probably the worst geology anyone can find in England, let alone South England." The tunnel boring machine will initially need to pass through approximately 300 meters of these unconsolidated and contaminated deposits before reaching chalk suitable for efficient tunneling. What People Are Saying Alan Price, technical director, Bouygues Murphy JV, at the Ground Engineering Piling and Foundations conference, April 2025: "Now we have a project, and it's just a case of how fast we can hit the accelerator, really. "The ground is so soft in the alluvium and the tunnel rings are so big, it wouldn't actually hold up the ovalisation we got on the rings. It's just not good enough. So, we have a massive campaign of cutter soil mixing before we can start tunnelling. "We would love to have launched our tunnelling machine in the nice dry chalk [on the south side] above the water table, but power supply wasn't actually sufficient in north Kent to drive the tunnelling machine." What Happens Next Pending final consent, enabling works at the Lower Thames Crossing will start in late 2025. Major construction on the TBM launch shaft and other critical infrastructure is slated for autumn 2026, with tunnel boring to commence in spring 2028. The project aims to open the new highway crossing by 2032.

Elon Musk Is Selling His Political Party Like a Tesla

Less than 24 hours after launching his political party, Elon Musk is already playing hype man for the movement he claims will disrupt America's broken political system. The richest man in the world took to X (formerly Twitter), the platform he owns, early Saturday morning to promote and to articulate the need for The American Party, his newly announced third party aimed at breaking what he calls the 'uniparty' stranglehold of Democrats and Republicans. The move has drawn sharp criticism from supporters of President Donald Trump and the core of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. As of now, Trump has not responded. 'The people want change,' Musk wrote in response to a user who referenced Ross Perot's 1992 presidential run, which despite ending early, still earned nearly 19% of the vote. 'If you keep voting out of fear, we will keep seeing the result of that. Our government won't change if we don't change our thinking,' the user said. The people want change — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2025That's the sentiment Musk is banking on. He's now channeling that energy into his own populist rebellion, but with a billionaire's budget and a full social media machine behind it. Musk's posts made clear he's still fuming over what he sees as fiscal irresponsibility from both parties, but especially from President Donald Trump and the Republicans. That betrayal, he says, is what finally pushed him to walk away. 'The Republican Party has a clean sweep of the executive, legislative and judicial branches and STILL had the nerve to massively increase the size of government,' Musk posted, referencing Trump's recently signed 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' a sprawling budget and tax plan projected to balloon the national deficit. 'Expanding the national debt by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS,' Musk added. The Republican Party has a clean sweep of the executive, legislative and judicial branches and STILL had the nerve to massively increase the size of government, expanding the national debt by a record FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS … — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2025When asked directly what triggered his break from Trump, Musk didn't mince words: 'Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.' Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 5, 2025This marks a stunning reversal for Musk, who donated close to $290 million to support Trump's re-election campaign and served as head of the controversial Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Once a star player in the MAGA orbit, Musk now positions himself as its biggest defector. Though most of the backlash to The American Party has come from MAGA loyalists, Musk says his movement isn't just for disaffected Republicans. Responding to a user who suggested that the party could 'soak up a lot of the existing Dem base that feels politically homeless / hate extremism,' Musk replied with a simple: '💯'. 💯 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2025He's pitching the party as a safe haven for political moderates who've grown frustrated with both the far-right and the far-left. And he's doing it with all the energy of a product launch. In true Musk fashion, he didn't stop at political philosophy. He started planning the party's first big event. 'When and where should we hold the inaugural American Party congress?' he asked his 222 million followers. 'This will be super fun!' When & where should we hold the inaugural American Party congress? This will be super fun! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2025His chatbot Grok, developed by his AI company xAI, suggested Austin, Texas—Musk's adopted hometown—as the ideal location. Musk responded, 'Good suggestion,' all but confirming that Austin may host the kickoff rally. Good suggestion — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 6, 2025Several pro-Musk accounts spread news that The American Party will run candidates in the 2026 midterms. While Musk hasn't confirmed names or races, he has hinted that the focus will be surgical: just a handful of high-impact congressional and Senate contests, enough to sway legislation and send a message. It's unclear who will carry The American Party's banner, or whether it will make any real impact on a deeply entrenched political system. But what is clear is this: Elon Musk has the platform, the followers, and the money—$361 billion, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index—to make noise. Whether it's political theater or the beginning of a real movement, Musk is once again putting himself at the center of America's biggest cultural flashpoints.
