New York Giants pass on David Wilson, select edge rusher in PFF's 2012 re-draft
After winning the Super Bowl in 2011, the New York Giants held the final pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL draft.
With the controversy and dispute surrounding Brandon Jacobs' contract that resulted in the team ultimately releasing the star running back, it wasn't a huge surprise that the Giants selected David Wilson, a running back out of Virginia Tech.
Unfortunately, Wilson's football career was short-lived. He played in 12 games for the Giants in 2012, recording 358 yards and four touchdowns with one fumble. He became the first player in NFL history to record 200 kick return yards and 100 rushing yards in a single game, and the first player since 1970 to have a kick return touchdown and two rushing touchdowns in the same game.
In 2013, Wilson was placed on injured reserve (IR) after suffering a neck injury in Week 5. The injury would result in his retirement from the NFL.
What would have happened had the Giants selected someone else, though? If they knew then that they have today, who would they have picked over Wilson?
Pro Football Focus specializes in such questions, and in their 2012 re-draft, they think the Giants would select edge rusher Whitney Mercilus out of Illinois.
Mercilus logged only three season-long 70.0-plus PFF overall grades in his 10-year career, but he hovered around 70.0 marks in tackling, pass rushing and run defense from 2012-2017 — just not always at the same time. He was a solid defensive lineman from this class.
In 2012, the Giants had players like Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Linval Joseph, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Chris Canty along the defensive line.
Now, Houston didn't take long to move Mercilus to outside linebacker, which the Giants could have done as well. But in reality, had the Giants selected Mercilus with that pick, he would have sat behind that line and made very few appearances in his rookie season.
However, that time would have allowed him to hone his skills as an edge rusher, and maybe he would have posted even better PFF grades with instruction from star veterans like those along the 2012 Giants' defensive line.
That's obviously not what happened, though. Over his 10 seasons in the NFL, Mercilus recorded 362 tackles (237 solo), 73 tackles for a loss, 58 sacks, 117 QB hits, 13 forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Nine and a half of his 10 seasons were played with Houston, and the final four games of his career were with the Green Bay Packers.

Lindor homers, leading Mets past Giants 8-1 for fifth straight win

Francisco Lindor homered in the third, Brandon Nimmo added a two-run single in the fourth and Juan Soto drove in two runs as New York backed Clay Holmes, and the Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 8-1 on Friday night for their fifth straight win. Holmes (9-5) surrendered one run and six hits over five innings with two strikeouts and a walk for his first win in five starts since beating Atlanta on June 25. New York got on the board in a hurry against All-Star Logan Webb (9-8). Nimmo doubled leading off the game and scored on Soto's RBI groundout, while Lindor singled after Nimmo and Pete Alonso drove him home on a sacrifice fly. Soto added an RBI single in the ninth. Webb has had back-to-back rough outings. He was tagged for a career-high tying 11 hits over six innings of a 6-3 loss at Toronto on Saturday, then gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings Friday. The Giants' lone run came on a groundout by Willy Adames in the first. New York kicked off a stretch of nine consecutive games against the NL West by extending its streak that has come on the heels of a three-game skid. The Mets are seeking their first series win in San Francisco since 2018. The Giants placed right-handed starter Landen Roupp on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his pitching elbow, recalling righty Tristan Beck from Triple-A Sacramento. Beck relieved Webb to begin the fifth. With Adames at second with a two-out double in the third, Matt Chapman was originally ruled safe at first on a throwing error by third baseman Ronny Mauricio. But the Mets challenged the tag call and Chapman was ruled out on replay review to end the inning. Lindor wound up 3 for 5 with his 20th home run, a double and three runs scored with a pair of strikeouts after snapping his 0-for-31 drought Wednesday against the Angels. LHP David Peterson (6-4, 2.90 ERA) pitches Saturday night's middle game for the Mets opposite Giants LHP Robbie Ray (9-4, 2.92) as he tries again for double-digit victories with a three-start winless stretch.

NFL Top 100: Jaguars WR Brian Thomas is No. 61, plays Cardinals in Week 12

Jacksonville's Brian Thomas Jr. had the rookie season that people wanted Marvin Harrison Jr. to have. This week, the NFL had its fourth week of revealing players in the "NFL Top 100." This week was about revealed Nos. 61-70. Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride came in at No. 65. On Friday, two Cardinals opponents for 2025 rounded out the week. Coming at No. 61 was Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas, who was a rookie last season. In his rookie campaign, he had the season Cardinals fans hoped that Marvin Harrison Jr. would have had. He had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made the Pro Bowl and was fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. He was the fourth rookie since the NFL-AFL merger to have at least 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns. Fellow 2024 rookie receiver Malik Nabers of the New York Giants, Thomas' college teammate at LSU, called him "a freak of nature." Teammate Travon Walker, a defensive end, said Thomas is "a good route runner" with "exceptional speed." The Cardinals will have to find a way to slow Thomas in 2025. The Jaguars come to State Farm Stadium in Week 12. He isn't the only Jaguars player in the top 100, as defensive end Josh Hines-Allen made the list just behind Thomas at No. 63.
