Ajay Singh Resigns As Interim Chair To Run For Boxing Federation Elections
Ajay Singh resigned as Interim Committee chairman to contest the Boxing Federation of India elections on August 21, 2025. Fairuz Mohammed is the new Interim Committee Chair.
Indian boxing's Interim Committee chairman Ajay Singh has resigned from his position to contest the upcoming federation elections, where World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst will act as an observer.
Singh stepped down immediately on Friday, a day after the Interim Committee officially announced the election date—August 21.
'I am pleased to inform you that the elections of the Boxing Federation of India have now been formally announced and are scheduled to be held on 21st August 2025," Singh wrote in a letter dated August 1 and addressed to van der Vorst, a copy of which is in possession of PTI.
'Since I intend to contest the forthcoming elections, I believe it is appropriate and in the interest of fairness and transparency that I step down from the position of Chairman of the Interim Committee with immediate effect," he added.
World Boxing, which established the Interim Committee in April to manage the day-to-day affairs of Indian boxing following months of internal unrest, accepted Singh's resignation on Saturday.
'We respect this decision and hereby appoint Mr. Fairuz Mohammed, President of Singapore Boxing, as Chairman of the Interim Committee to ensure continuity till the new body is elected," van der Vorst stated in a letter.
World Boxing has also confirmed that van der Vorst and acting Secretary General Mike McAtee will be present as observers during the elections.
'Additionally, we wish to inform you that I, myself, along with Mr. Mike McAtee, Acting Secretary General of World Boxing, will be present in India on 21st August 2025 to act as observers for the BFI elections," van der Vorst wrote.
Singh, who is also the Chairman of SpiceJet Airlines, has already completed two four-year terms as BFI President and is now aiming for a third and final stint, as permitted under the 2011 National Sports Development Code of India.
Anurag Thakur To Contest Elections
Anurag Thakur is set to be Singh's main opponent, as Himachal Pradesh Boxing will once again nominate the former Sports Minister's name as its representative.
Thakur had been in the running when the elections were initially scheduled for March 28 but his name did not appear in the Electoral College finalised by Singh and subsequently approved by the Returning Officer.
Singh had stated Thakur was 'ineligible" to represent Himachal Pradesh, citing an official directive stating that only 'bonafide and duly elected members during the election AGM (duly notified to BFI) of the State Units affiliated with the BFI shall be authorised to represent their respective States/Union Territories."
Thakur's exclusion led his faction to initiate legal proceedings, which are still ongoing.
The much-delayed BFI elections will mark a return to an elected body for Indian boxing after months of uncertainty, internal conflict, and legal setbacks that had delayed the process.
World Boxing had earlier set a deadline of August 31 for the elections to be completed.

Kolkata man found dead, family says he ended life fearing NRC deportation
The family of a 63-year-old man who was found dead in his Kolkata residence Sunday alleged that he died by suicide since he was living in fear of being deported to Bangladesh under the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), police said. A suicide note purportedly written by the victim, Dilip Kumar Saha, an Indian citizen, was found from the spot, police said. Saha, who reportedly moved to Kolkata from Nawabganj in Dhaka in 1972, was found hanging in his room in the Anandapally West area of Regent Park. Police said Saha's wife Arati Saha, and another relative broke into the room after he did not respond to their repeated calls. He was declared dead on arrival at a hospital. Arati claimed that her husband was under mental stress as he feared being sent to a detention camp and eventually deported to Bangladesh even as he possessed valid voter ID and other documents. Saha worked as a non-teaching staffer at a private school in Dhakuria in south Kolkata. The matter is under investigation, police said. Meanwhile, local TMC MLA and Power Minister Arup Biswas, who visited the family, said, 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you.' Later in the day, the TMC held a press meet, with party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh holding the BJP-led Centre responsible for Saha's death. Ghosh accused the Centre of creating 'an atmosphere of terror' that is causing 'valid Indians' to fear for their lives, especially those who may struggle to produce their parents' documents. Education Minister Bratya Basu also condemned the incident, calling the BJP's 'insulting and harassing' notices to Hindu Bengalis regarding the NRC. 'The way in which the BJP has been sending NRC notices to Hindu Bengalis, is to insult and harass them. Not being able to tolerate this, Dilip Kumar Saha has ended his life. HCL India Squash Tour 2025: Top seedings for Egypt's Yassine Shohadi, Noor Khafagi; Joshna, Nirupama withdraw; Rajasthan's Chhabi Saran in main draw
1 2 Jaipur: Egypt's Yassine Shohadi and Nour Khafagi have been given top seeding in the men's and women's categories, respectively in the first leg of the HCL India Squash Tour 2025 starting at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium here on Monday under the joint aegis of the Squash Rackets Federation of India and HCL. Star Indian squash players Joshna Chinappa and Nirupama Dubey withdrew just a day before the start of the tournament, allowing Rajasthan's Chhabi Saran to enter the main draw. Squash Rackets Federation of India vice-president Surabhi Mishra said here on Sunday that Egypt's Yassine Shohadi has been given the top seed in the matches starting from Monday. Japan's Tomo Endo has got the second seed, Sri Lanka's Ravindu Laksiri has got the third seed and Malaysia's Darin Pragasus has got the fourth seed. Surabhi Mishra informed that Suraj Kumar Chand is the only Indian in the top 8 in the men's category, who has been given the sixth seed. India's Rahul Baitha, Aryaveer Diwan, Ayan Wazir Ali and Diwakar Singh will also challenge. Surabhi said that in the women's category too, Egypt's Noor Khafagi is the top seed.
