Sci-fi series savagely branded 'soulless' by critics – but fans feel differently

Metro5 days ago

Critics have taken a hatchet to a new Disney Plus sci-fi series, branding it soulless and boring, but not everyone is on the same page.
If you're a fan of the MCU and were scrolling through social media this morning, it's very likely you've seen the first reactions to Ironheart.
Set after the events of Wakanda Forever, the show follows genius gadgeteer Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) as she teams up with the mysterious Parker Robbins (Anthony Ramos) in the hope of scraping together enough cash to build a new suit of Iron Man-style armour.
However, Parker isn't what he seems, and before long, Riri finds herself torn between the mystical and the mechanical.
Critics have watched all six episodes of the new Marvel TV show, and while they can't publish full reviews yet, they have been allowed to share their thoughts on social media.
And sadly, it seems a portion of those who write about the cape and cowl crowd for a living aren't overly impressed with what the series offers.

@HopeSloop admitted on X that 'Ironheart is really fun at times but feels (in my humble opinion) like it's desperately in need of a soul.'
'The magic vs. machine theme is conceptually intriguing, but feels like it's lacking here,' she continued. 'I'm ambivalent because I didn't hate any part, but I didn't love anything either.'
@TheHollywoodhandle wrote: '#Ironheart have some fun moments, but it's never interesting enough nor does it manage to stick the landing.'
'Bland characters and a super uninteresting plot that doesn't know where it wants to go. A disappointment overall.'
@RenGeekness was similarly negative, telling his followers that despitehaving some 'ideas and themes', it 'can't overcome a scattershot narrative.'
@Mark Cassidy was also disappointed by the series, posting on X that 'it's not good'.
'It becomes obvious very quickly why Marvel decided to dump this on D+ 3 eps at a time,' he continued. 'Can't fault the cast, but none of them are given much to work with.'
@ZachPope was on the fence with the series, writing that he really wanted to love Ironheart but came away 'not feeling much'.
'VFX, Action, & some new additions of magic mythology to the world of the MCU stand out,' he added. 'But the character arcs feel at a standstill by the end & don't go anywhere.'
Metro's own Zac Haniff sat down with Ironheart executive producer Ryan Coogler to get the latest on the MCU …
Everyone knows that the MCU is building to the Secret Wars, but Marvel Studios already has an eye on the future and the end of the Multiverse Saga.
And do you know what's coming next? While it's Marvel's merry mutants, the X-Men of course!
More excitingly, plans are already in the works for the film with Ryan telling Metro that Jake Schreier (who just made Thunderbolts) will direct the X-Men reboot.
Let's hope Ryan had permission from Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige to tell us that…
@DavidOpie felt similarly, claiming the show was a 'mixed bag'. That said, he did admit that 'the second half is much better than the first, tho (sic), especially when magic's thrown into the mix.'
Despite some critics feeling let down, though the wider fandom seems to have enjoyed the show.
@adamhlavac told his followers he was 'surprised Marvel didn't market it more' and that 'it starts pretty strong and gets better and better as the series progresses'.
The cosplayer @seejaylewis was also enthusiastic, writing that it was a 'gritty, funny, and powerful show' that 'brings something fresh and exciting to the MCU.' More Trending
@POCculture really enjoyed Riri's adventures, posting, 'Ironheart is a sincere look at what the life of a teen genius superhero would be like. It's fun & exciting but also hard & heavy.'
@FenixDKevin meanwhile wrote that Ironheart's 'grounded/street level feel' was 'a welcome change of pace from the usual world ending threats'.

Ironheart is available to watch on Disney Plus from July 25.

Married At First Sight star rushes son to hospital after nasty accident

A Married At First Sight groom has revealed his son has been rushed to hospital after a scary accident, just months after a previous hospital dash Married At First Sight star Ryan Livesey has revealed he had to rush his son Leo to hospital after a nasty accident. The dad-of-one took to Instagram to share a picture of his seven-year-old boy with a bandage on the back of his head, with blood visible underneath the white plaster. Revealing how the incident occurred, he told his fans: 'A&E on a Friday night… Leo's split his head open playing football.' In the next story, Ryan showed his fans the graphic extent of the injury. ‌ The E4 star didn't share any other updates beyond this, suggesting Leo was back home and well. The proud dad regularly shares photos and videos of his boy on his Instagram for his 97.1 thousand followers to see. ‌ On Saturday, alongside a picture of the cheeky father and son duo, he gushed: 'He may outgrow my lap, but never my heart. Watching him grow is my life's greatest joy.' In November last year, Ryan shared a heartwarming video of moments he's shared with Leo to commemorate his seventh birthday. He penned: 'Happy 7 th Birthday, Leo Livesey! From the moment you arrived on 11-11-2017, weighing 6.6 pounds, you've been the greatest gift life could offer. 'You fill every day with love, joy and pride, and Dad loves you more than you'll ever know. Wishing you a day filled with laughter, adventure and all the happiness in the world. Happy Birthday Son!' This isn't the first time that Leo has been rushed to hospital after Ryan had to take him back in December. He shared a snap of his little man sitting on a hospital bed in a blue dressing gown and wrote: 'I love you,' but didn't share any other information on his condition. ‌ Ryan shot to fame on Married At First Sight last year and married bride Sionainn. However, things didn't work out between the pair, with Sionainn quitting the experiment early, leaving Ryan in the lurch. As the pair reunited to explain what happened behind the scenes, she told the experts: 'It got to the point, it was the most ridiculous argument, we started arguing over shoelaces. Then he told me all his feelings were fake, he never meant any of it and I thought I've done it too many times and I am not doing it again. Ryan shot back: 'A pathetic argument over a pair of shoes, made you leave to the experiment,' as she expressed: 'But it was a multitude of things that added up.' ‌ Explaining his side in more detail, Ryan wrote on social media: 'Writing this is difficult, and to be honest, I'm not sure where to begin. "I was starting to develop real feelings and it meant a lot to hear Sionainn say she felt 'safe and comfortable' around me. This is something I truly pride myself on. 'I wish things would have turned out differently but now feels like the right time for myself and Sionainn to leave the experiment and I wish her all the best for the future."

I no longer get roles just because I am desirable, says Scarlett Johansson

Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she is no longer offered roles solely because she is considered 'desirable'. The Lost in Translation star revealed that she was offered a string of rom-coms, such as He's Just Not That into You (2009), where only sex appeal was required – something she described as 'deeply unfulfilling'. However, in an interview with the Sunday Times magazine reflecting on how her career has changed, the 39-year-old actress said: 'The messaging is different.' She explained: 'There are many more role models, women are visible in powerful positions, and the opportunities I have had to play women who don't have to just be one thing or another have increased. 'But when I was younger, a lot of the roles I was offered, or I went for, had their ambitions or character arcs revolving around their own desirability, or the male gaze, or a male-centred story. 'That is less frequent, though something has shifted.' Johansson, who starred as Black Widow in nine Marvel films, said that in the early stages of 'responsibility then was just to be productive' in the early stages of her career. The actress added: 'Trying to maintain the momentum of my career and wait for things that felt right. And that is hard because there is an existential angst that comes with waiting, but I had to allow space for the creative process to do its thing. 'It was nerve-racking. I'm in a business where you feel like, at any moment, you'll become irrelevant. But I think it pays of – I know it does.' When asked how she stays motivated during her career, she said: 'There are just so many things that I imagine doing. 'I'd love to do more theatre, a film with a musical element. A horror.' Johansson also said that she looked up to Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford when she was younger. She said of Ford: 'He seems so shy and reserved, a private person. But he is also so photogenic, his shyness is revealed through a little twinkle in his eye, his vulnerability shines through. 'Some people just have that star quality.' It comes as Jurassic World: Rebirth, which stars Johansson as Zora Bennett, who leads a team that wants to extract blood from dinosaur hearts in search of a cure for human heart disease, is set to be released this week. Johansson said she is an original Jurassic Park fan and recalled: 'I was blown away as a kid.'

I live-streamed Kneecap's Glastonbury set when the BBC wouldn't — here's why

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Helen Wilson has been going to Glastonbury for 26 years, but she never thought she would go viral on social media for being at the festival. The music fan from Somerset has been hailed as a 'legend' not only online, but by Irish rap trio Kneecap, after live-streaming their West Holts stage performance on TikTok to two million viewers. In the scorching heat, Helen even burned her fingers after holding up her phone for an hour to show her support for the group, whose performance wasn't being shown by the BBC. Metro reporter Danni Scott walked the length of Worthy Farm to find Helen. She asked her about the decision to stream the performance, and the reaction since. Speaking exclusively to Metro, Helen said: 'I am a [Kneecap] fan, and so I've been aware of their plight. 'I'm also aware of what's happening in Palestine, and the controversy surrounding the band and the discussion from the BBC's point of view that they weren't going to air the set. 'So, that was something that a lot of people were talking about even before the festival started.' Helen, who is working at a bar at Glastonbury, wasn't supposed to be at the set, but was given an hour off to watch the performance. Speaking of her decision to go live to millions of viewers, she said: 'I'd thought about it before because I knew that the BBC had said that they weren't going to be showing the set, and I really believe in free speech.' 'I also think that as lovers of music, we have to do things to support the artists that we believe in, and when there's censorship coming from large media institutions such as the BBC I think it's up to people like me to step in. 'To do something that thousands of people across the UK and beyond can actually see what's happening, because if you watch over TikTok, you'll see the volume of love and support that was there, and actually that's what I wanted everyone outside these fields to see.' The BBC released a statement confirming it has put Kneecap's Glastonbury set on iPlayer, but with some edits. The corporation did not broadcast the set live. More Trending 'We have made an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on iPlayer, as part of our online collection of more than 90 other sets,' the BBC says in a new statement this morning. 'We have edited it to ensure the content falls within the limits of artistic expression in line with our editorial guidelines and reflects the performance from Glastonbury's West Holts stage. 'As with all content which includes strong language, this is signposted with appropriate warnings.' Helen added in a statement shared with Metro: 'Glastonbury stands for freedom. Streaming Kneecap's set was my way of honouring that legacy and sharing it far beyond the fields of Worthy Farm.' Got a story?
