Now, however, the South African Social Security Agency has begun a review of the 2025 SASSA social grant payment system. The goal herein is to fix long-running problems. 'Core' SASSA grants are disbursed to more than 28-million beneficiaries every month.
Specifically, the 2025 SASSA social grant review will re-examine the Master and Service Level Agreements between SASSA, the SA Post Office (SAPO) and Postbank. Since 2018, this agreement has guided SASSA grant payments. However, it is abundantly clear that after SAPO's financial collapse, and Postbank took over in 2022, their problems have only worsened. Better still, the project is being headed up by the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME), rather than SASSA. The department head says the 2025 SASSA social grant review will be completed before the year is through. In turn, the department will examine what caused the breakdown between SASSA and Postbank. And it will suggest ways to make the SASSA grant payment system better.
Recurring problems, such as 'network challenges' and 'system glitches' are often attributed to the failures. However, the 2025 SASSA social grant review goes further. It will look at Postbank's failure to provide access to chairs, water, and toilets to beneficiaries waiting in queues at branches. As such, the review wants to hear the viewpoints of affected beneficiaries themselves. And civil society groups had until Friday (23 May 2025) to comment and nominate representatives for the project's steering committee.
In time, the goal is for an improvement plan to be tabled, and a progress report produced every six months for the next two years. Civil advocacy groups have welcomed the review into 2025 SASSA social grant payments. They're happy that problems between SASSA and Postbank are 'finally being acknowledged.' IOL reported on Friday that the murder of the female public prosecutor in front of her child and partner has been described as an attack on the rule of law. Tracy Brown, a regional court prosecutor, was shot and killed in front of her house at Lotton Street, Young Park in Gqeberha on Thursday after four men alighted from a white Polo vehicle and fired multiple shots at her vehicle. Nqola said protectors of the justice system in South Africa are not safe. 'This is indeed a tragedy where the protectors of our criminal justice system are not safe anymore. This is unacceptable and no stone should be left unturned to bring the culprits to book,' he said. According to reports, Brown was ambushed and shot multiple times by four armed assailants while sitting in her car, in full view of her partner and child. 'The brutal nature of this assassination-style killing is deeply disturbing and represents a direct attack on the justice system and those who serve it with dedication and courage,' he said. This incident follows the tragic murder of Elona Sombulula, a court official at the Engcobo Magistrate's Court, in April. The parliamentary committee is 'gravely concerned' by what appears to be a pattern of targeted violence against officials within the justice sector. 'The murder of Ms Brown is not only a devastating loss to her family and colleagues, but an attack on the rule of law in South Africa. Prosecutors serve at the forefront of our fight against crime and corruption. When they are targeted, it threatens the foundations of our constitutional democracy. 'The committee sends its heartfelt condolences to Ms Brown's loved ones and colleagues during this painful time. The committee also calls on law enforcement agencies to prioritise the investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and face the full might of the law.' Nqola said the portfolio committee will engage with the Department of Justice and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on urgent measures to enhance the safety and security of prosecutors and court officials across the country.

AGENCY quietly increases 2025 SASSA asset and means limits
2025 SASSA asset and means limits all depend on the grant you're applying for. The agency's 'core' grants, like Older Person, Disability and War Veterans tend to be the highest. While other social welfares, like Childcare and SRD, only have a means test and no asset portion. Interestingly, an increase to nearly all 2025 SASSA asset and means limits this year has gone by largely undetected. This new eligibility criteria came into being back in April 2025, at the same time above-inflation increases were initiated for 'core' SASSA grants. Image: File Since May 2025, the agency has been tightening its income verification processes. As The South African reported previously, SASSA now cross-references your income with several third-party sources. So, even if you've been getting away with extra income before, you should be careful if you don't declare so to the agency now. If you are one of the quarter of a million SASSA grant recipients who has had their monthly stipend halted, this is how you can rectify the situation: Report in-person to your nearest SASSA branch. Bring along a recent bank statement. Valid work payslip. Copy your ID (plus your child's ID if applicable). Supply your proof of residence (no older than three months). If you have indeed overstepped the 2025 SASSA asset and means limits, you will have three options open to you. You may either pay the money back in full, arrange a debit order that goes off each month from your bank account. Or the agency can setup a payment system for you. However, this will accrue interest and end up costing you more in the long run.
