NFL tight end Jimmy Graham confirms retirement days after heroic achievement in a different sport

Daily Mail2 days ago
Veteran tight end Jimmy Graham has confirmed a report from the New Orleans Saints' team website that he plans to officially announce his retirement in the near future.
Graham, 38, is expected to make this announcement as a member of the Saints, with whom he spent the first five seasons of his career before rejoining them in 2023 for what will go down as his final 13 NFL games.
'What a journey,' the five-time Pro Bowl selection posted on X. He also included black and gold hearts and a praying hands emoji.
Graham's retirement decision comes just days after he completed 'The Arctic Challenge' - a rowing expedition across the Arctic Ocean - as part of a four-person team that was bidding to set a world record for the fastest to ever cross it.
According to the Ocean Rowing Society, the team finished in a world record time of 10 days and five hours, beating the previous record of 15 days, five hours and 32 minutes.
Graham, who did not play in 2024, was selected by New Orleans in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Including the playoffs, his 94 career touchdowns rank fifth all-time among tight ends.
The 38-year-old played a total of 13 seasons in the NFL and will retire as a New Orleans Saint
The former First-team All-Pro recorded 719 receptions for 8,545 yards and 89 touchdowns in 197 regular-season games with the Saints (2010-14, 2023), Seattle Seahawks (2015-17), Green Bay Packers (2018-19) and Chicago Bears (2020-21).
He played a total of 13 seasons in the NFL and was the league's receiving touchdowns leader in 2013.
Before being picked in the 2010 NFL Draft, Graham had only played one season of college football at Miami, having previously played basketball for the school from 2005-09.
He told ESPN last summer that his retirement plans would be based around New Orleans' needs after his two spells with the franchise.
'I just want to make sure when I retire, it's as a Saint, and it's when they want me to,' Graham said.

July 25 (Reuters) - Argentine midfielder Rodrigo de Paul has left Atletico Madrid and will join Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, the LaLiga club announced Friday. "Rodrigo de Paul bids farewell to Atletico Madrid and will continue his professional career at Inter Miami," the club said in a statement. De Paul will join his compatriot and friend Lionel Messi, with whom he has won two Copa America titles, a Finalissima and the 2022 World Cup. The 31-year-old made nearly 200 appearances in four seasons under fellow Argentine coach Diego Simeone but leaves the Spanish capital without silverware. De Paul made his debut for Argentine club Racing Club in 2012 and has also played for Valencia and Serie A side Udinese.

In latest bat flip flap, big league players side with Little Leaguer

Jazz Chisholm Jr., known for playing with flair, noticed when a Little Leaguer was suspended in baseball's latest bat flip flap. 'I thought that was ridiculous. You're going suspend a kid for having fun?" the New York Yankees All-Star infielder said Friday. ' Crazy.' Marco Rocco, a 12-year-old from Haddonfield, New Jersey, tossed his bat in the air on July 16 after his sixth-inning, two-run homer in the final of the sectional tournament for Haddonfield's under-12 team against Harrison Township on July 16. His father went to court and got the suspension eliminated. 'If it's a game-changing homer, it's fine. Even when I'm on the mound, it doesn't irk me. It's a human reaction and it's good for the game, just like a pitcher doing a fist pump after a big strikeout," said Toronto pitcher Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner. "I side-eye someone if they hit a solo shot and their team is down 5-0. That doesn't jive with me. I don't like it when opponents or teammates do that. I feel the same way about Little Leaguers.' Rocco was ejected for what his family was told were actions deemed 'unsportsmanlike' and 'horseplay,' and an ejection results in an automatic one-game suspension. His father, Joe, is a lawyer and his dad filed suit. Judge Robert G. Malestein of New Jersey Superior Court ruled in favor of the Roccos, and Marco played for Haddonfield against Elmora Little League in a 10-0 loss Thursday in the opener of a four-team, double-elimination tournament at the Deptford Township Little League complex. Marco went 0 for 2 with two strikeouts. 'I wish nobody would do a bat flip. I'm kind of traditional,' Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson said before adding, 'But let him play.' A staid sport for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, baseball has embraced emotion in recent years. José Bautista's bat flip against Texas in a 2015 AL Division Series was featured in the video game MLB The Show 16. 'It's a kid's game, Whether you're a kid or a major leaguer, we're in a have-fun era," Detroit catcher Jake Rogers said. "If you earn that moment, you earn that moment.' ___ AP Sports Writer Larry Lage contributed to this report.

Dodgers' Mookie Betts out of lineup vs. Sox, could return Saturday

July 25 - Mookie Betts did not travel with the Dodgers and will not play Friday night when Los Angeles faces the host Boston Red Sox as he deals with a personal matter, manager Dave Roberts told reporters Friday. However, Betts is expected to arrive in Boston around the 7:15 p.m. ET start of Saturday's game. Roberts said he is unsure whether Betts will be in the lineup Saturday. "There might be some things going on that he might not be around, that he's got to deal with personally," Roberts said following Wednesday's 4-3 win over the visiting Minnesota Twins in which Betts started a ninth-inning rally with a two-out infield single. "Everything is OK with him, but yeah, we'll see." Betts spent the first six seasons of his career in Boston and was the American League MVP in 2018, when he led the Red Sox to a World Series victory over the Dodgers. Betts was traded to the Dodgers in 2020 for Alex Verdugo, Jeter Downs and Connor Wong. He's been an All-Star and earned MVP votes in four of his first five years with Los Angeles. The 32-year-old has struggled this season with career lows across the board offensively, hitting .238 with a .309 on-base percentage, a .370 slugging percentage, 11 homers and 45 RBIs in 94 games this year. The eight-time All-Star and former American League MVP owns a career batting line of .290/.369/.514 with 282 homers and 876 RBIs in 1,475 games for the Boston Red Sox (2014-2019) and Dodgers (2020-25). He won a World Series title with Boston in 2018 and two with the Dodgers, in 2020 and 2024. --Field Level Media
