Who advanced (and who didn't) out of final qualifying for the 2025 British Open

USA Today15 hours ago
The U.S. Open has Golf's Longest Day, the nickname given to the 36-hole marathon final qualifiers.
The British Open also has a day of final qualifiers. Ahead of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, the R&A staged four qualifiers, each advancing the top five to the championship.
Burnham & Berrow, Royal Cinque Ports and West Lancashire in England as well as Dundonald Links in Scotland were the host venues. The R&A reported that 288 golfers were spread across the four courses.
Who advanced out of final qualifying for the 2025 Open Championship?
Lee Westwood won this qualifier at 7 under (70-67) to earn his first British Open spot since 2022. In fact, that was the last PGA Tour major he's played in. In that time, he's only played two seniors majors.
Conner Graham (a) and Paul O'Hara tied for fifth at 4 under and faced off in a sudden-death, 2-for-1 playoff for the final spot with the amateur Graham coming out on top.
Among the notables who did not advance: Adrian Meronk and Callum Tarren (who both withdrew).
Another LIV golfer won this qualifier, with Lucas Herbert finishing 8 under (69-67), a shot better than the field.
This qualifier also had a playoff, a 4-for-2 between Richard Teder (a), Oliver Lindell, Ronan Mullarney and Sam Bairstow. Teder and Lindell were the lucky golfers to advance from that playoff.
Among the notables who did not advance: Tommy Morrison (a), Harold Varner III, Andy Ogletree, Harrison Crowe, Alex Fitzpatrick and Sam Horsfield.
South Africa's Justin Walters finished in first at 9 under. PGA Tour winner Harry Hall was tied for second, a shot back.
Among the notables who did not advance: Anirban Lahiri, Caleb Surrat.
A third LIV golfer, Dean Murmester, won this qualifier. He did so by four shots at 10 under (70-64), shooting a second 18 holes that was six shots better than his first. All three LIV golfers who advanced did so after winning their qualifier.
Among the notables who did not advance: David Puig (who opened with a 64 but then shot 78), Erik van Rooyen, Ian Poulter, Luke Poulter (a), Graeme McDowell, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen.
Four amateurs advanced to 2025 British Open
There was one amateurfrom each of the four qualifiers who advanced:
They are Sebastian Cave, Frazer Jones, Connor Graham and Richard Teder, who became the first golfer from Estonia to make it to the British Open.

Open Championship: Lee Westwood Joins Sergio Garcia at Royal Portrush

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Open Championship is only a few weeks away, and the hype around Royal Portrush is booming. With the final field still trickling in, players are grinding through qualifiers, hoping to punch their ticket to golf's oldest major. Earlier this week, Sergio Garcia secured his spot in dramatic fashion, and now another LIV Golf veteran has joined the party. Lee Westwood, in what might be the most remarkable comeback of the season, will take part. (Photo by) More Getty Images Westwood, 52, has not played a major since 2022. Had he missed out this year, it would've marked his third straight absence from The Open, a tournament he's called "the greatest championship in golf." But on Tuesday, he delivered when it mattered most. Competing at Dundonald Links in Scotland, Westwood fired rounds of 70 and 67, finishing at 7-under 137 to top the Final Qualifying leaderboard. The performance earned him one of five coveted spots from the venue and marked his 92nd career major start. "I've always said it's the greatest championship in golf," Westwood told reporters after sealing his place. "As a British player, you get phenomenal support. I'm just looking forward to enjoying the week at Portrush, seeing a few old friends and enjoying that golf course." Lee Westwood will be at Royal Portrush after posting -7 in Open Final Qualifying at Dundonald. A different class today. — John Turnbull (@JohnTurnbull03) July 1, 2025 This return means more than just another tee time. Westwood has played 27 times at The Open, making 21 cuts, with six top-10 finishes and a runner-up in 2010. His last appearance at Royal Portrush was in 2019, where he tied for fourth, nine shots behind winner Shane Lowry. The road back wasn't easy. After wrapping up LIV Golf Dallas, Westwood flew overnight to Scotland, battling jet lag and fatigue. "I've been up since half-past one this morning," he admitted, "so I was starting to feel it." But grit won out, and the former World No. 1 now joins fellow LIV qualifiers Sergio Garcia, Lucas Herbert, and Dean Burmester in the 156-player field. The Open Championship begins on July 17th. Open Championship: LIV Golfer Left Dizzy, Quits Qualifying

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Sam Horsfield was disqualified from the Final Qualifier for The Open Championship played on Tuesday at West Lancashire Golf Club. He only played the first nine of the 36 holes scheduled for the event, and by then had a score of 7-over. The disqualification came about because Horsfield left the course after completing the front nine of the first round without notifying the officials. Although the player did not deny that his decision was related to his poor performance, he did explain that he was not in the best physical condition: "I felt completely dizzy and out of it all day," Horsfield posted on Instagram. Sam Horsfield of England reacts after being defeated by James Nitties of Australia in the semi final during day four of the World Super 6 at Lake Karrinyup Country Club on February 11, 2018 in Perth, Australia. MoreThe reason for his "dizziness" had to do with a bad night's sleep, as he himself explained: "I flew back home Sunday night and landed into [London airport] Heathrow at 4pm. By the time I got up to West Lancs, it was about late. Had a bit of dinner and fell asleep at 10:30/11," he said. "At 1AM the fire alarm went off and we had to go stand outside for an hour or so. I eventually got back sleep around 5:30 for a 6am alarm, which I slept thru, but fortunately my caddy woke me up." Horsfield arrived in West Lancashire straight from playing the LIV Golf Dallas at Maridoe Golf Club, where he finished tied for 25th. The three-time DP World Tour winner has competed in three editions of the Open Championship with a made cut (tied for 67th in 2021). Sam Horsfield has responded to the report around him withdrawing from Open Qualifying. A little bit of context goes a long way. — Flushing It (@flushingitgolf) July 1, 2025 LIV Golf players qualified for The Open Championship Lucas Herbert was the only LIV golfer to qualify in West Lancashire, and he did so with mealist honors, finishing first with a score of 8-under. Fellow league players Harold Varner III and Andy Ogletree failed to secure any of the five spots at Royal Portrush that were contested there. Lee Westwood and Dean Burmester also qualified through the final qualifiers. The Englishman did so at the Dundonald Links event, and the South African at the Royal Cinque Ports. Here is the complete list of LIV golfers who have qualified to play in the 2025 Open Championship: Bryson DeChambeau Jon Rahm Tyrrell Hatton Dustin Johnson Brooks Koepka Phil Mickelson Patrick Reed Cameron Smith Jason Kokrak Joaquin Niemann Louis Oosthuizen Carlos Ortiz Tom McKibbin Henrik Stenson John Catlin Lee Westwood Lucas Herbert Dean Burmester This is likely the final list of LIV Golf players at Royal Portrush, as the remaining options to qualify are related to membership in the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. There is also the possibility that some LIV golfers could receive a special invitation, although this is a remote possibility, as the R&A does not routinely issue such exemptions.
