The Open Championship is only a few weeks away, and the hype around Royal Portrush is booming. With the final field still trickling in, players are grinding through qualifiers, hoping to punch their ticket to golf's oldest major.
Earlier this week, Sergio Garcia secured his spot in dramatic fashion, and now another LIV Golf veteran has joined the party. Lee Westwood, in what might be the most remarkable comeback of the season, will take part.

Westwood, 52, has not played a major since 2022. Had he missed out this year, it would've marked his third straight absence from The Open, a tournament he's called "the greatest championship in golf."
But on Tuesday, he delivered when it mattered most. Competing at Dundonald Links in Scotland, Westwood fired rounds of 70 and 67, finishing at 7-under 137 to top the Final Qualifying leaderboard.
The performance earned him one of five coveted spots from the venue and marked his 92nd career major start.
"I've always said it's the greatest championship in golf," Westwood told reporters after sealing his place.
"As a British player, you get phenomenal support. I'm just looking forward to enjoying the week at Portrush, seeing a few old friends and enjoying that golf course."

This return means more than just another tee time. Westwood has played 27 times at The Open, making 21 cuts, with six top-10 finishes and a runner-up in 2010.
His last appearance at Royal Portrush was in 2019, where he tied for fourth, nine shots behind winner Shane Lowry.
The road back wasn't easy. After wrapping up LIV Golf Dallas, Westwood flew overnight to Scotland, battling jet lag and fatigue.
"I've been up since half-past one this morning," he admitted, "so I was starting to feel it."
But grit won out, and the former World No. 1 now joins fellow LIV qualifiers Sergio Garcia, Lucas Herbert, and Dean Burmester in the 156-player field. The Open Championship begins on July 17th.

PGA Tour Pro Give Surprising Impression of Young Rory McIlroy

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. With the Scottish Open just days away and the Open Championship around the corner, PGA Tour is heating up. And Rory McIlroy is back where it all began, Royal Portrush. Just days ago, McIlroy was spotted visiting the course. But while the grand slam winner sharpens his game for a potential comeback on home soil, one of his longtime rivals-turned-friends dived through their memory lane. "There was a kid by the name of Rory McIlroy. He has done okay in his career!" Horschel joked. "He had just finished low amateur at Carnoustie... He was only 17 at the time." The two first met at the 2007 Walker Cup at Royal County Down, where Horschel admitted he didn't quite grasp how good McIlroy was until he saw it firsthand. "He did not come over to America to play that I can remember... But we knew he was really good," Horschel said. "I played against him a couple of times and what he showed was a lot of talent and ability. A lot of belief." Their early encounters weren't exactly warm. Horschel confessed he was trying to be "the Sergio Garcia for the American side," adding: "I probably went overboard a little bit... I thought Rory was great and said if you need anything in America I am happy to help, and the next day I read some comments [from him]. I'm like, well this is as expected." "From there until where we are now, I think the world of him," Horschel said. "We have a great friendship. We text... We're completely different people now." Reflecting on McIlroy's journey, Horschel added, "We knew he had ability, but what he has accomplished in the game of golf was historic. It wasn't one we didn't believe could happen, but you just never know how it is going to pan out." Arsenal signs Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

LONDON (AP) — Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad on Sunday, finally making the move to the Premier League after turning down Liverpool last year. The transfer fee wasn't disclosed but the BBC reported Arsenal has paid almost 60 million pounds ($82 million) for the 26-year-old Zubimendi. The holding midfielder made 236 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad after coming through the club's academy. He played there alongside Mikel Merino, who joined Arsenal last year. Zubimendi has played 19 games for Spain, including coming on as a half-time substitute in the 2-1 win over England in the 2024 European Championship final. 'I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me," Zubimendi said. "They have shown their potential recently and the best is yet to come.' Arsenal has finished second in the Premier League in each of the past three seasons. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team," said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, a fellow Spaniard. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us.' Zubimendi slots into the squad in place of Thomas Partey, whose contract expired this summer. On Friday, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, British police said. ___

Max Homa Literally Saves Par From Across the Street at John Deere Classic

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. There's no doubt that Max Homa is in a state of grace at the John Deere Classic. Not only has he posted his best scores for a single tournament all season, but he's also been able to make the most of even the worst situations. Those who don't believe this can check out the video that has gone viral on social media, showing Homa saving an impossible par from across the fairway and over the trees. Max with a HUGE par save from across the street. LFG. — Fore Play (@ForePlayPod) July 5, 2025 The play occurred on the 599-yard, par-5 10th hole. Homa completely missed the green with his second shot, sending the ball wide left, beyond the cart path that borders the greenside slope. The ball came to rest 40 yards from the pin, requiring an uphill shot. Furthermore, it was completely blocked by trees, so Homa had no view of the flagstick. However, the six-time PGA Tour winner rose to the occasion and made the best shot possible. The ball hit the green and rolled into the rough, coming to rest 46 feet away from the hole. From there, Homa two-putted to save an incredible par. Max Homa's Extraordinary Run at John Deere Classic This was the first of only two difficult situations for Homa in the third round of the John Deere Classic. One hole later, he missed the green again with his second shot and ended up carding his only bogey of the day. "That's what I've been searching for for a while, and it's starting to click the last four, five days." Max Homa has carded his best 18-hole score (63), 36-hole score (131) and 54-hole score (199) of the season at TPC Deere Run. This performance places him tied for second with 18 holes remaining, just one stroke behind leader Davis Thompson. According to Golf Channel journalist Brentley Romine, Homa has trailed after 54 holes in five of his six PGA Tour victories: 2021 Genesis Invitational (by 2 shots) 2021 Fortinet Championship (by 2 shots) 2022 Wells Fargo Championship (by 2 shots 2022 Fortinet Championship (by 1 shot) 2023 Farmers Insurance Open (by 5 shots) Let's see what happens Sunday.
