
Biblioracle: David Szalay's novel ‘Flesh' has an approach I wouldn't have thought would work
Several days after finishing the novel, I find myself in the same state of mind, which is a testament to the novel's unusual approach, and because of that approach, its haunting power.
'Flesh' is the story of István, who we first meet as an adolescent having moved to a new town in Hungary, where he lives in a small apartment with his mother. Adrift like many young teen males, István is — in a way — seduced by his married neighbor and begins a sexual relationship with her. István is not even particularly attracted to the neighbor, but the power of his sexual desire, particularly in the absence of attraction, is both interesting and impossible to resist.
After the neighbor's husband discovers the affair, István kills the man accidentally as part of a scuffle on the apartment building stairs. He goes to juvenile jail, and once freed, enlists in the Hungarian army, where he winds up experiencing combat — including the death of a friend — in the Iraq war.
The rest of the novel unfolds with István's fortunes (literally and figuratively) improving. He moves to London and finds work as a bouncer and then is recruited by a private security company, eventually getting steady work as a live-in driver for a wealthy couple with a young son. Throughout his journey, István, despite lacking any kind of apparent charm, or even intention at seduction, is irresistible to a series of women, the pattern started with his next-door neighbor repeating.
This includes the wife of the wealthy couple, much younger than her husband, and frequently shepherded around London and its country environs by István. She initiates an affair, later conducted with increasing openness. István, both vicariously and then directly, is given access to a life of great material privilege, a condition to which he takes with seeming comfort, but also without apparent pleasure.
I'll leave off the narrative summary there because what Szalay unfurls next generates some surprising and satisfying tension, but the intrigue of this novel goes well beyond its plot.
What's most fascinating to me as the reader is that Szalay has deliberately removed one of the most potent tools in the novelist's shed, the ability to render a character's interiority — their thoughts, feelings, worries and excitements — in exchange for an exceedingly spare accounting of István's life.
The most frequently used word is 'OK,' mostly coming from István in response to something another character has said. We know that he has been through trauma — he sees a therapist for PTSD after his military service — but we are given no insights into how István feels about any of this.
He is stimulated by the sex, but what goes beyond or gets underneath this stimulation is never explored. Other events that would be objectively devastating happen and then are put behind him as life inexorably moves on.
At first, these authorial choices rankled, I thought something was missing, but as I kept reading, I fell in with Szalay's approach and found myself more and more invested in István, and as the novel heads toward a fateful choice we are, in a way, aching for him, even though we hardly know him.
I'm not sure I would've believed novels can work this way, but as I remain haunted by the book and eager to have others check it out, I recognize that with 'Flesh,' Szalay has done something quite special.

Notorious French singer faces new probe over ex-wife's death
A notorious French singer who beat his girlfriend to death is to face a new legal investigation over the suicide of his ex-wife following a Netflix documentary about his violent behaviour, prosecutors said Thursday. Bertrand Cantat, former singer with popular 1980s rock band Noir Desir ("Black Desire"), was the subject of a widely watched three-part Netflix documentary that aired from March this year. He was sentenced to prison over the killing of actress Marie Trintignant in a Vilnius hotel room in 2003, but worked and performed after being released despite protests and calls for a boycott. Prosecutors in Cantat's hometown Bordeaux said in a statement Thursday they were looking into "potential acts of intentional violence" against his ex-wife Krisztina Rady, who was found hanged at her home in 2010. Prosecutors will look into "several claims and testimonies not included" in four previous investigations into the circumstances of Rady's death, all of which were closed without charges, the statement said. - A 'violent argument' - In "The Cantat Case" on Netflix, a nurse claims that Rady visited a hospital in Bordeaux "following an altercation with her partner, a violent argument" which had resulted in a "scalp detachment and bruises." The nurse said he consulted her hospital file out of "curiosity" in the archives of a hospital in the city where he was a temporary worker. Rady, a Hungarian-born former interpreter, had also left a terrorised message on her parents' answering machine before her death. In it, she referred to violence by Cantat, the documentary and a 2013 book written by two French journalists claimed. Bertrand Cantat's lawyer, Antonin Levy, said he was not aware of the reopening of an investigation into the case when contacted by AFP. - Albums and concerts - After being released from jail in 2007, the Bordeaux singer worked on a new album and toured with the band Detroit. His case sparked fierce debate, with many fans prepared to pardon his criminal record and seeing him as someone who had served out his punishment behind bars -- four years out of an eight-year sentence. Women's rights campaigners viewed him as a symbol of violent misogyny, even more so after the death of Rady in 2010. The release of his first solo album "Amor Fati" in 2017 sparked more controversy in the midst of the #MeToo movement, which saw women around the world speak out more forcefully about domestic violence and sexual assault. It led to several of Cantat's concerts being cancelled and protests from feminist organisations. At a major concert at the Zenith venue in northeast Paris in 2018 attended by thousands of fans, Cantat targeted journalists saying "I have nothing against you, you have something against me... ‘Senseless act of violence' Burlington man who murdered wife gets life sentence, no parole for 13 years
A 73-year-old Burlington man convicted of murdering his wife has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 13 years and six months. Sandor Somogyi listened with the help of a Hungarian interpreter as Justice Janet Mills handed down his sentence in a Milton court on July 22. A jury found Sandor guilty of the second-degree murder of his wife Margit Somogyi, 67, on April 29. Margit was found dead in her Regency Court apartment on Jan. 13, 2023. In discussing the reasons behind the sentence, Mills called Margit's murder 'a senseless act of violence' which has deprived three women of their mother and seven grandchildren of their grandmother. She offered her condolences to the victim's family and said she hoped the sentence would give them some measure of closure. While the jury had recommended a parole ineligibility period of 10 years, Mills argued this was inappropriate stating a parole ineligibility period of 12 years is the minimum for intimate partner murder in Ontario. 'Domestic violence continues to be a scourge in our society,' said Mills. 'Sentencing must reflect the need for strong denunciation.' Assistant Crown attorney Maureen McGuigan said Sandor's crime warranted a parole ineligibility period of 16 years. She argued during the trial that Sandor had killed Margit by neck compression in her bedroom because Margit tried to kick him out of her apartment and because he suspected her of a past infidelity. Sandor did not deny killing Margit, but said he had done so in self-defence , alleging she attacked him when he would not get out of her apartment. He also claimed he had not intended to kill her. The jury's verdict of guilty indicates they did not believe Sandor's story. Defence attorney Donald Carter had called for a parole ineligibility period of 12 years. Mills said Sandor's killing of Margit in her own bedroom constituted an egregious breach of trust. She also called death by neck compression a terrifying way to die. The judge pointed out that immediately following his altercation with Margit, Sandor did not try to get immediate help for her by calling 911. Instead, she noted that he stayed in the apartment for four hours and lied to the property manager who knocked on his door and asked if Margit was all right, telling him Margit was sleeping. Mills recalled the testimony of Margit's daughter, Beata Pegoretti, who had spoken to her mother the night before her death . Property management wanted Sandor, who was not on the apartment's lease, out of the building following an incident of public intoxication. Margit had been told she would need to leave too if Sandor was not out by noon on Jan. 13, 2023. Pegoretti testified she asked Margit to go home with her instead of confronting Sandor, but Margit declined. 'She was close to her mother and clearly traumatized by her death particularly because it was at the hands of her father,' said Mills. The judge acknowledged that Sandor ultimately told police that he had killed Margit and that during a previous hearing he had apologized for his actions. Mills said he had no violent criminal record, but did have three convictions for impaired driving. She also took into consideration conditions at Maplehurst Correctional Complex, calling them challenging to say the least, noting lockdowns are frequent and triple bunking has become routine. With all aggravating and mitigating factors taken into account Mills sentenced Sandor to life in prison with a parole ineligibility period of 13 years and six months. Hungary bans three Ukrainian military officials from entering its territory
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Hungary on Thursday banned three Ukrainian military officials from its territory over the death in Ukraine of a Hungarian-Ukrainian dual citizen, as diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries rapidly deteriorate. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán last week accused Ukrainian authorities of beating the man to death during his mobilization in the Ukrainian military. Ukraine, which has been battling against a full-scale invasion by Russia since February 2022, has rejected Orbán's claim, saying the man was a Ukrainian citizen who had left his military unit without authorization and later checked himself into a hospital which found no signs of physical injury indicating violence. Ukrainian officials have promised a full investigation into the man's death, which they said had been caused by a pulmonary embolism. But Orbán and media outlets associated with his government have continually insisted that the man was beaten to death by military recruiters, despite providing no conclusive evidence. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told a news conference Thursday that Hungary would ban three military officials in response to the death. He did not name them, but said they were a head of personnel for the military, a regional commander and a Defense Ministry official in charge of mobilization. Szijjártó added that Hungary's government on Wednesday had requested that the three individuals be put on a European Union sanctions list. 'Until the sanctions are implemented, we have today taken measures to ban all three individuals from entering Hungary,' he said. Orbán, a vehement critic of Kyiv and its fight to ward off Russia's invasion, has charted a starkly different course than his EU partners in his approach to Ukraine, refusing to supply it with weapons or allow their transit through Hungarian territory, demanding sanctions relief and rapprochement with Russia, and adopting a combative stance toward both Kyiv and its EU backers. In recent weeks, he has escalated a sweeping anti-Ukraine campaign and lobbied intensely against the embattled country's eventual accession into the EU, portraying Ukraine's membership in the bloc as an existential threat that would bring war, crime and economic ruin.
