Truck driver who murdered his wife with hammer is jailed for life
A truck driver who murdered his wife with a hammer before using her phone for months to pretend she was alive has been jailed for life.
Francesca Deidda vanished on May 10, 2024, in Sardinia, Italy, with her friends growing increasingly suspicious in the wake of her shock disapperance.
The 42-year-old's husband Igor Sollai, 43, was found to have killed his wife before stuffing her body into a duffel bag and dumping it under a bridge in a remote part of the Italian island, where it lay undiscovered for more than two months. A court in Cagliari heard how Sollai bashed her head with a hammer eight times while she was lying on a sofa at their home.
The court was told the truck driver then put up that same sofa for sale online just days after and used Deidda's phone to impersonate her. On WhatsApp, he sent cheery messages to her friends and colleagues and emailed a resignation letter to her boss at the call centre where she worked.
He also sold her Toyota Yaris in a bid to gather enough money to flee to his brother's home in the Netherlands, according to investigators.
Deidda's body was finally found on July 18 curled up in the foetal position inside the large duffel bag hidden beneath dense brush near a disused bridge in the countryside outside San Priamo, with the help of police sniffer dogs.
The remote location was only accessible via a dirt track, reinforcing suspicions that the killer had carefully chosen it to avoid discovery. Beside her body, searchers found personal items including a bathrobe, a dental guard, and the remains of a sweatshirt.
Her brother, who had reported her missing weeks earlier, had told investigators Sollai never attempted to search for his missing wife. Although WhatsApp messages continued to arrive from her number, they noticed she had stopped replying with voice notes or answering calls, something highly unusual for her.
Sollai initially told police they were on a break and that he thought she was staying with family. But under questioning, investigators soon discovered that he had been posing as Francesca, messaging friends and relatives.
An autopsy later confirmed that Francesca had been bludgeoned to death with a hammer, though decomposition made the precise time of death harder to determine.
Sollai eventually confessed to the murder in what prosecutors described as an attempt not to show remorse, but to get a more lenient sentence. He was found guilty of aggravated femicide and concealment of a corpse and sentenced to life in prison, with one year in solitary confinement.
He was also ordered to pay €1.4 million (£1.2 million) as compensation to the victim's family. After the verdict, Deidda's brother Andrea said: "I'm satisfied. Of course, nothing will change because my sister is no longer here and won't come back. But in terms of justice, I'm very satisfied - I'm pleased with the work done and with the sentence."
Sollai's defence said the jail sentence was "expected" but they will try to get a decrease in the sum he was ordered to pay.

easyJet flight met by police after 'abusive' passenger urinates in aisle
Police officers stormed the plane on arrival in Tenerife on Wednesday morning. A disruptive passenger on board an easyJet flight is said to have urinated in the aisle, forcing staff to call ahead for police to meet the plane on arrival as a rowdy group caused trouble. The scenes played out on board the service from Birmingham to Tenerife South on Wednesday, July 2, with air traffic controllers giving it priority landing on the Spanish island, where it arrived just before 3.30am. Local newspaper Canarian Weekly reported the cabin crew had requested "urgent assistance" after the incident, with "significant disturbance" caused. The airline confirmed the group of passengers had become "abusive and threatening" during the flight. Police boarded the plane on arrival in Tenerife, the Mirror reports. However, it is not known whether any arrests were made. A spokesperson for easyJet said: "We can confirm that flight EZY6607 from Birmingham to Tenerife on 2 July was met by police on arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard. "easyJet's crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations. They acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority, and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It comes just weeks after police were called to an easyJet flight bound for Marrakech in May, which had descended into chaos by rowdy British passengers on a stag party. Two men reportedly vaped on board, drank heavily and subjected the crew to abuse. Despite six warnings from staff, they continued to act in a rowdy manner, and the pilot was forced to divert to Faro, Portugal, leaving fellow passengers fuming. A witness claimed: "The men were vaping in their seats and toilet, drinking heavily and to my opinion already drunk or close to when boarding. They were being abusive towards staff on the flight and I think they had an undertone of homophobia toward the head steward." An easyJet spokesperson said the flight, from London Gatwick to Marrakech on May 19, "diverted to Faro and was met by police upon arrival due to a group of passengers behaving disruptively onboard". Once the passengers had left the aircraft, the flight then continued to Marrakech. "Our cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and acted quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers was not compromised at any time. The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is always easyJet's priority and we do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard."

They woke me up at 6am after an 18 hour tour bus journey. I was tired and they said it was room service. "The Brixton thing in me said 'Ding ding'. "There were no tray and I thought something was wrong. I cussed the guy and he said he would come back. "It was just about 6am. They found the guy from my description. I did a Karen and said 'I want to speak to the manager'. "The hotel said they had to let him go as our stories did not match up. "They said he was looking for his girlfriend but it was dodgy. "In the end the manager tells me there is no case." The star explained that things could have been a lot worse had she not been alert. "You know sometimes in your life when you have steam blowing," Skin said. "I had to take myself away from this man and the situation. We made the hotel look at the cameras to get a picture of this man. Pop star continues making new music - after hits in the 90s "He was leaning up against my door. He could have pushed the door in with a knife or he could have had Chloroform. "Who knows what would have happened. But I am a fighter and that is going to get me in trouble." Following the scary ordeal, the singer said they are now forced to be more vigilant when staying at hotels. The musician continued: "Now I will have to get one of those little lock things to put in the door. If you are in a band you will need to get one. It can happen to you. "Don't wait for something awful to happen. "Put better security and cameras into your hotels and key cards so you can use the lift. "I am still vexed even telling the story. Never open your door at weird times useless you know who is there." Skin claimed the hotel is continuing to "review their security systems" to increase the hotel guests protection. The hitmaker added: "I'm not trying to get anyone fired, my life mantra is that prevention is better than a cure. Hotels can do a lot to make their clients safe. "The reaction should not be to automatically pit my word against someone clearly being dodgy because you didn't catch him camera doing it. But thanks to Pullman Hotels for listening and doing something about it, that is much appreciated." Skin is lead vocalist of Skunk Anansie. In 2015, Skin joined the judging panel of the Italian version of talent competition The X Factor for one season. Woman's boyfriend brutally tortured to death in own home by her ex-partner
The couple's new build home was taped off by police for two weeks after the incident, as cops combed the scene for clues. A woman's boyfriend was brutally tortured to death in his own home by her ex-partner, a court has heard. Thomas Campbell's face was 'disfigured' during a ferocious and repeated attack carried out by girlfriend Demi-Lee Driver's "obsessed' ex. The horrific crime was carried out by John Belfield, along with two others including Thomas Campbell's ex wife, who, fuelled by jealousy and rage, wanted to send a murderous message to Demi. Hours after Demi tried to text and phone Thomas, the true horror of what had happened on Riverside in Mossley near Manchester on July 2, 2022 emerged. The couple's new build home was taped off by police for two weeks after the incident, as cops combed the scene for clues and the 31-year-old was brought down by an intricate probe which, used his phone data to track his movements, Manchester Evening News reports. Belfield sent a series of vile messages to her in the week leading up to the killing, detailing exactly what he thought of her, the court heard. As they continued to row, Belfield told her: 'You will never have a boyfriend you will have to move country give it a week and you will see why and what happens when you take the pi**'. In the lead-up to that the murder on July 2, a tracking device had been placed on Thomas Campbell's car, with the help of Thomas's former wife Coleen Campbell who used their children to confirm his whereabouts. Belfield goaded Thomas about how close he was getting to his ex-wife. "I'm going to sh** her for the point of it as well as saying you like her you soft boy,' Belfield told him in a message, days before murdering him. Thomas was then ambushed at his front door by three men, one of which was Belfield, and bundled into his home. Inside that house, he was stabbed, strangled, and had boiling water poured on his genitals. Blood coated the walls after the horrific attack. He suffered significant facial injuries, a hint that his attackers deliberately disfigured him. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Coleen Campbell was found guilty of manslaughter following a trial in 2023, for her role in the horrendous plot. Reece Steven, who Belfield recruited into the crime, and was one of the three attackers to kill Thomas Campbell, was found guilty of murder. Stephen Cleworth, who Belfield also recruited and planted the tracking device on Campbell's car, was convicted of manslaughter. The trio were all also convicted of conspiring to rob Thomas Campbell. The third attacker who formed part of the group who attacked Campbell remains unknown and is wanted by police. Coleen Campbell, Steven and Cleworth were all jailed in 2023. But Belfield evaded police and fled the country two days after the murder. He was arrested in Suriname in March 2023 and eventually flown back to Manchester a year later. After a month long trial in July 2025, Belfield was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to rob. Jurors were unanimous on both counts. He faces a huge minimum term and will be sentenced next month.
