New road rules move sees Aussie drivers slapped with $500,000 in fines

Yahoo4 days ago
Drivers in a major Aussie city have been slapped with more than $500,000 in fines after outraged motorists dobbed them in with the help of dashcam footage.
Like NSW and Queensland, the ACT offers an online portal for residents to report various non-urgent incidents to police, with the service expanding last year to allow the submission of traffic offences caught on camera.
And the move appears to have paid off, with authorities receiving more than 1,800 reports from July, 2024 until June, leading officers to issue more than 1,100 infringements. Another 250 drivers copped a warning.
Speaking to Yahoo News on Friday, a spokesperson for ACT Policing revealed most drivers caught on camera were busted for traffic light offences — mainly failing to stop for a red light — which carries a $552 penalty.
The 'dangerous and selfish' act places everyone on the road at 'significant risk', Detective acting Inspector Sean Evans said, urging those behind the wheel to 'slow down and be patient'. 'The longest you'll wait for a green light in Canberra is approximately a minute and a half,' he explained.
Numerous motorists were also fined for driving without due care, negligent driving, and overtaking violations, with police releasing shocking clips of the offences. The footage shows a large truck crossing multiple lanes at great speed before almost colliding with a motorist, and various other cars suddenly swerving in front of trailing vehicles.
Warning to drivers breaking road rules: 'Dangerous'
The spokesperson for ACT Policing told Yahoo the online reporting system is 'an added measure of accountability for drivers', alongside police patrols and cameras.
'Police may not catch you running a red light, but the car behind you may, and if there's video evidence, you can then be issued an infringement,' they said.
'Police can't be everywhere, all the time. And this system allows other drivers — where they see dangerous driving occurring — to report it to police in a simple and convenient way.'

To report a driver, you must be able to provide video or photographic evidence of the offence you witnessed when requested by ACT Policing. The complainant may also be required to provide a formal witness statement and attend court to confirm the information.
Earlier this year, ACT Policing Chief Police Officer Scott Lee said the electronic service had freed up resources, allowing officers to focus on more time-sensitive matters.

US government employee banned from leaving China

China Australia WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. government employee has been banned from leaving China after traveling there in a personal capacity, the State Department said Tuesday, marking the latest case where Beijing has stopped U.S. nationals from departing the country. The State Department did not reveal the identity of the employee at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which is part of the Commerce Department, but said it is 'tracking this case very closely' and that it is engaged with Chinese officials to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. 'The Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of American citizens,' it said. The Chinese government restricts people from leaving the country if they are involved in investigations, including business disputes, but it has been accused of using the tool to arbitrarily keep both Chinese and foreign nationals in the country. China's use of the exit ban and other concerns previously prompted the State Department to tell Americans to reconsider travel to China. The travel advisory was only eased in November after China released three U.S. citizens who were detained for years. It's one of the latest instances of such travel restrictions. The Wall Street Journal reported last week that Chenyue Mao, a U.S.-based Wells Fargo banker, was blocked from leaving China, prompting the bank to suspend all travel to the country. Citing 'privacy and other considerations,' the State Department did not comment on Mao's case. Wells Fargo said Tuesday that it is 'closely tracking this situation and working through the appropriate channels so our employee can return to the United States as soon as possible.' Guo Jiakun, a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry, said Mao is 'involved in a criminal case currently being handled by Chinese law-enforcement authorities' and that she is 'subject to exit restrictions in accordance with the law.' 'Let me stress that it is an individual judicial case,' Guo said. 'China will as always welcome people from all countries to travel and do business in China and ensure their rights and interests in accordance with the law.' Asked about the case involving the U.S. government employee, Guo said: 'I have no details to share. China upholds the rule of law and handles entry and exit affairs in accordance with the law.' Other Americans have faced China's exit ban. Two American siblings were only allowed to leave China in 2021 after they were stranded there for three years after visiting their relatives. New bicycle safety signs around Denver's Wash Park aim to stop crashes, deaths

The Colorado Department of Transportation placed new safety signs around Washington Park in Denver to make it safer for bicyclists. CDOT said 79 bicyclists have been killed over the last five years across the state. One more bicyclist was killed Monday night in Denver in a hit-and-run. CDOT says they placed the signs around Washington Park because it is one of the most active parks in Colorado. Hundreds of bicyclists, walkers and roller skaters use the park each and every day. CDOT hopes to expand to other parks in the future. CDOT says the main reason Colorado is seeing so many bicyclists getting killed on the roadways is because of drivers failing to yield to bicyclists. There are two big rules to remember. First, bicyclists do not have to be at a complete stop at a stop sign. Bicyclists do stop at a stop light, but once it is clear, they can go through it, even if it is red. The second, when drivers are passing a bicyclist, they must leave three feet between them. CDOT says if both of these rules are followed, it can help lessen the tensions they are seeing between drivers and bicyclists. "Traffic deaths are entirely preventable on our roadways, especially when it comes to our bicyclists," said Sam Cole, Traffic Safety Manager with CDOT. "Bicyclists are only going five, 10, to even 20 mph at a time. You, as a driver, are driving 30 to 40 mph in a two-ton machine. You have extra responsibility to use caution around bicyclists." CDOT says this is the first time they have launched a campaign focused on bicyclist safety. Their hope is to do this annually around the summer. CDOT is reminding bicyclists not to ride around with headphones on so they can hear their surroundings. Also, bicyclists should have reflective coverings on their bicycles, wear reflective clothes, and have lights when riding at night.

1 Teen, 15, Dead and Another, 14, Hospitalized in 'Serious Condition' After Jet Ski Crash

One teenager is dead, and another was seriously injured after a jet ski crash in Sydney. The New South Wales Police Department shared in a press release that it launched an investigation into the accident, which occurred on Sydney's south shore and killed one 15-year-old boy and left a 14-year-old boy hospitalized. Police said the incident took place on Tuesday, July 22 at around 6 p.m. They received reports of a 'jet ski crash' that left 'persons in the water' and arrived on the scene on the Sylvania side of Tom Uglys Bridge on the Georges River to investigate. Officers found a 15-year-old boy already 'deceased in the water,' who was 'unable to be revived.' A 14-year-old 'was treated at the scene for a severed arm.' The teenager was sedated and placed into an induced coma before being transported to the hospital, according to The Nightly and 7News Australia. He was later transported in 'serious condition' to Sydney Children's hospital by paramedics, police said. 'A crime scene has been established and investigations commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident,' police said in a statement. The boys had been riding on the same jet ski when the crash occurred, according to initial reports from The Nightly and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Sutherland Shire Police Area Command Inspector Tim Carter said in a news conference, per ABC, that they suspected they hit something prior to the accident. "At this stage, it would appear the jet ski has collided with an object or obstacle in the water, which has then thrown these two boys from the jet ski, where they have sustained these injuries," he said, per the outlet. The New South Wales Police Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for additional information on the incident. One witness, Alexandra Farrugia, told ABC that she had seen a body floating near the bridge while walking nearby with her partner. "We just saw a lot of lights on the water, a lot of police on the water, and they brought someone up on his stomach," she recalled. The Georges River, where the jet ski crash occurred, is a popular site for people riding various water crafts including jet skis and boats, according to Sky News. Read the original article on People
