Turkey taking crypto transaction steps to hinder laundering, Simsek says
On his X account, he reposted an article by state-owned Anadolu news agency saying Turkey was preparing to introduce transfer limits and mandatory waiting periods for withdrawals on crypto assets.
It said the new steps will include waiting periods of 48 to 72 hours for crypto withdrawals where the travel rule - requiring the verification of information on the sender and recipient of a transaction - is not applied.
"We are taking new steps to prevent the laundering of criminal proceeds obtained from illegal betting and fraud through cryptocurrency transactions," Simsek said.
"Administrative, legal, and financial sanctions will be imposed on non-compliant platforms," he added.
The daily limit on the transfer of stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value, will be capped at $3,000, with a monthly limit of $50,000, Anadolu said.
The travel rule is a set of guidelines designed to prevent money laundering, that mandates virtual asset service providers to obtain and disclose precise details pertaining to the sender and recipient of a virtual asset transfer.

Rescuers evacuate 50,000 as Türkiye battles wildfires
ANKARA: Rescuers in Türkiye have evacuated more than 50,000 people, mostly from the western province of Izmir, as firefighters battled a string of wildfires, the AFAD disaster agency said Monday (Jun 30). The worst blaze began Sunday in Seferihisar, a forested area 50 kilometres southwest of the resort city of Izmir, spreading rapidly with winds of up to 120 kilometres per hour, officials said. "A total of over 50,000 citizens from 41 settlements have been temporarily relocated to safe areas," AFAD wrote on X, saying 79 people had been affected by smoke and other fire-related issues, none seriously. Of that number, 42,300 were evacuated from Seferihisar, where TV footage showed huge areas of flame raging through forested areas, sending vast clouds of black smoke into the sky. Another 1,500 people were forced out of their homes in the southern Hatay region, where four helicopters, 211 fire engines and 540 firefighters were fighting a blaze some 10 kilometres north of the city of Antakya, the governor said. Around 850 others were forced to flee from two other wildfires in northwestern Türkiye, AFAD said. Meanwhile, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said on X that one person had been arrested for allegedly starting one of the wildfires in the Izmir area with gasoline. "The suspect is alleged to have set fire to their own residence, (which) subsequently caused a forest fire," he wrote, without giving further details. Since Friday, 263 fires had broken out across Türkiye, of which 259 were under control while efforts were ongoing to fight the remaining four, the agriculture and forestry ministry said. Izmir airport, which temporarily suspended flights on Sunday, resumed operations, Turkish media reported. Wildfires have ravaged nearly 19,000 hectares of land across Türkiye so far this year, according to the website of the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). Experts say human-driven climate change is causing more frequent and more intense wildfires and other natural disasters, and have warned Türkiye to take measures to tackle the problem.

The pace of talks to resolve the war in Ukraine depends on Kyiv's position, the effectiveness of US mediation and the situation on the ground, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in remarks televised on Sunday (Jun 29). Five months into US President Donald Trump's term, there is no clear end to the war Russia launched in February 2022 against its smaller neighbour, despite his 2024 campaign vow to end it in one day. Trump, who has pushed both sides towards ceasefire talks since his January inauguration, said on Friday he thinks "something will happen" about a settlement of the war.
