Did Lata Mangeshkar try to push down new singers? Anuradha Paudwal dismisses speculation, says ‘they should try to sing like her'

Iconic human beings often end up being polarising individuals, as their wide reach also pulls in people who might not agree with their practices or believe in their greatness. Lata Mangeshkar was definitely one of those singers who through her voice, moved an entire country, and through her actions, received praise, love and sometimes criticism. While there are some who think that Mangeshkar's unchallenged domination is the result of some larger scheme. There are some, like singer Anuradha Paudwal, who refuse the existence of any such actions or plans and continue to defend the icon even now.
While talking to BBC Hindi, Anuradha reflected on her career as a playback singer, how an opportunity that presented itself out of nowhere when SD Burman listened to her voice on a tape recorder. She shared, 'When Burman sahab was composing the music for Abhimaan (1973), he wanted a small shloka (stanza) for the introductory scene of Jaya Bachchan. He asked my husband (Arun Paudwal), who was his music arranger, to come up with something, and he did, but while sending the recording to him, he asked me to record it in my voice. The moment he heard my voice, he asked Arun about me and told him that he didn't need Lata ji for such a small part and that I should sing it, and that's how things started for me.'

Getting to sing something that was originally planned for Mangeshkar is an honour in itself, no matter how small the part is, and Anuradha acknowledges this. When asked about people's speculations about Mangeshkar and Bhosle's careers and whether they deliberately pushed talent down in order to serve their longevity, Anuradha quickly shut down the allegations. She said, 'Lata ji is like my guru, and she will always remain so, and I learnt singing hearing her sing the Bhagavad Gita. The people who think that she was throwing her weight around or pushing people down should try and sing like her. How many people could do what she did with her voice? People have their peaks, and just because these two sisters had such a long career, you can't undermine them. Even at this age, Asha ji practises every day, and doubting the two of them is extremely foolish.'
Throughout her illustrious career, Mangeshkar remained very vocal about what she felt was fair and unfair in the industry. Her demanding royalty payments as a singer were one of the most impactful things to happen in Bollywood music for a long time, and even though it divided the industry back then, her actions laid the groundwork for giving singers their due.

'Excuse Me, I'm Talking': Shweta Bachchan Snaps At Navya During Talk Show; Reddit Says 'Aishwarya Must Be…'

Jaya Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan's chat on Navya Nanda's show went viral, sparking Reddit debates about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's relationship with her in-laws and family dynamics. Jaya Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan's candid conversations on Navya Nanda's talk show often go viral on the web. It was during one such moment when Shweta snapped at her daughter for interrupting her while she was trying to make a point. The clip is going viral on Reddit, and as expected, social media users brought up Aishwarya Rai Bachchan into the conversation. The video clip started with Jaya Bachchan expressing her concern over how there is too much information on everything nowadays. Shweta tried to pick it up from there when her daughter, Navya, interrupted her. Shweta sternly told her, 'Excuse me, I am talking. Please don't cut me off." Navya immediately apologised. However, Reddit users seemed divided. While some commented on how Aishwarya deals with her in-laws, others found the conversation quite normal. 'I'm getting anxiety imagining myself as the bahu of that household already. And I am a man," wrote a user, supporting Aishwarya. 'Imagine coming out from an physically abusive relationship to get married in a mentally/emotionally toxic max family. Bhagwan ne sundarta di toh sukun nahi diya," wrote another. Other users wrote, 'Imagine if this made to the final cut, how much toxicity had to be edited and removed from the entire bit!!!!!", 'Aish is strong. Strong enough to avoid these 3 completely." Then there were those who called the altercation a regular, normal situation in every household. Supporting the Bachchans, they wrote, 'Why are people pretending like they have never had any arguments like these with their parents or siblings?", 'Tbh this seems like pretty much normal family argument like me, my mother and my nani have arguments like that where we all talk at the same time and didn't let other complete the sentence!", 'I saw this on insta and was disappointed seeing the comments cos everyone was talking about how toxic this is, but for me this is normal cos this is literally how me and mom talk when we sit together." Meanwhile, all through last year, Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan have braved divorce rumours. This year, they quashed speculations about their marriage by posting a family photo after a long time. Apart from this, Aishwarya also wore sindoor with her saree look at Cannes 2025, which many thought was her silent response to divorce speculations. Puja Pujara's memoir on life with husband Cheteshwar gets UK launch

Last Updated: London, Jul 19 (PTI) 'The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife' penned by Puja Pujara, capturing the journey of her husband Cheteshwar, found a hallowed introduction place at the Lord's Cricket Ground library and the author termed the book as 'something for everyone." In the book, Puja narrated the achievements and struggles of the India batter's international career that spanned between 2010 and 2023 from a wife's off-field perspective. 'It was a real honour to be invited to ring the bell at the Home of Cricket (during Day 3 of the third Test between India and England) and also present a copy of this memoir at Lord's," said Pujara after the formal presentation of the book at the library. The book also had a formal launch at the Nehru Centre in London on Friday. 'She has put together my entire journey, which even if I was writing an autobiography myself, I wouldn't have done that. She has captured all the moments, good and bad, very candidly," he said. In the book, Puja has tried to capture the cricketer's 'unique" journey from the streets of Rajkot to international cricket while also giving a glimpse into his character as 'stubborn, yet accommodating, secretive but with nothing to hide". 'The story is something for everyone. It's not just for cricket followers but anybody who picks up the book will find it interesting and will relate to some portion of the book in some way and get inspired," said Puja. During an in-conversation session at the Nehru Centre, she shared the strong influence of the 'Bhagavad Gita' on the couple's life – both on and off the field. 'Try and be in the present as present is everything and you can only control what is in your control – we try and relate to these teachings and practice it because the 'Gita' helps us stay more positive, be more present because you don't want to get into the negativity," said Puja. Asked about his future plans, Pujara said he is enjoying actively playing cricket and expects to be involved in the game in some form, whether it is commentary or coaching, in the longer term. Pujara's last international match was the WTC Final between India and Australia at the Lord's in 2023. 'Besides that, we both enjoy travelling and while I am actively playing cricket we don't get time for a long break, it's always more of a staycation than a holiday. So, we want to travel around the world whenever it is possible," shared the Saurashtra cricketer. Robert Lawson, Chief Executive and Secretary at the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), welcomed the addition of the new memoir to the Lord's extensive books' collection. 'It's a very courageous move by Cheteshwar Pujara himself and it's terrific that Puja feels so empowered to be able to write this and be an inspiration for everyone involved in the game, especially for women," said Lawson, as he received a copy of the book at the Lord's. 'When most of us look at cricketers, we only look at them as players on the field. But they have an important aspect of their lives outside of the playing arena and any focus on that deserves all the credit," said Sujit Ghosh, India's Deputy High Commissioner to the UK. The book, published by HarperCollins, is now available through Amazon in the UK. 'This is the first time a sportsman's better half has presented his story in her words," said Sachin Sharma of HarperCollins. He was speaking at the launch of the 'Sankalpam' anti-drug awareness campaign initiated by Vizianagaram District Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal. Sharing his own experiences, the actor said, 'At the peak of my career, due to unfortunate circumstances, I hit a low point in life. I got addicted to alcohol and was even driven to contemplate suicide. But I decided to fight back, reminding myself of the values instilled by my parents, who gave me a good education, taught me karate and the Bhagavad Gita. Slowly, I overcame my bad habits and re-established myself as an actor with the blessings of my fans.' He added that substance addiction turns individuals into a burden on their families and society.
