Colleen Bready's Forecast: Air quality concerns continue

CTV News17-07-2025
Colleen Bready has your current conditions and updated weather forecast for July 17, 2025.
As temperatures rise in Manitoba, so do air quality concerns in parts of Manitoba and northwestern Ontario on Thursday.
Cooler temperatures earlier in the week brought a break from the worst wildfire smoke in northern Manitoba, but those conditions are changing.
Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an air quality warning for several northern and central regions from Lynn Lake, Flin Flon and The Pas, through Norway House, Thompson and Island Lake.
The weather agency said smoke is expected to cause very poor air quality and reduced visibility for the rest of the week.
There is also the risk of thunderstorms in the north on Thursday, which could produce lightning strikes. Otherwise, most areas will see sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud with afternoon highs in the low 20s.

Meanwhile, ECCC issued a special air quality statement for parts of eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario, closer to where wildfires are burning. An area of high pressure over the area should keep smoke more contained in those areas for the time being.
Conditions are uniform across southern Manitoba Thursday, including Winnipeg, with a mix of sun and clouds and below-normal mid-July temperatures in the low 20s.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-20s in Winnipeg and much of Manitoba by the weekend.
Rain or showers could start by Sunday night and continue on Monday across most of the province, too.

Toronado warning issued for parts of northwestern Ontario on Sunday

Environment Canada issued tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of northwestern Ontario on Sunday. Tornado warnings were issued Sunday morning for the Kakabeka Falls, Whitefish Lake, Arrow Lake, Atikokan, Shebandowan, and Quetico Park areas. Sunshine, Glenwater, and O'Connor may also be impacted, Environment Canada said. "A severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado is located 23 kilometres southeast of Greenwater Lake, moving east at 70 km/h," the weather agency said. "This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. If you hear a roaring sound or see a funnel cloud, swirling debris near the ground, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately." Meanwhile, severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for Thunder Bay, Cloud Bay and Dorion. Severe thunderstorm watches are in place for Atikokan, Shebandowan, Quetico Park, Fort Frances, Emo, Rainy River, Kakabeka Falls, Whitefish Lake, and Arrow Lake.

Possible industry-related earthquake rattles northern Alberta Saturday night

Some residents of northwestern Alberta may have felt the ground shake after an earthquake was recorded in the region on Saturday night. Earthquakes Canada said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.2, about 36 kilometres south of the city of Grande Prairie, Alta. The quake is a possible industry-related event, Earthquakes Canada said. The quake was said to be lightly felt in Grande Prairie and the surrounding area. No damage was reported and none is expected. Earthquakes Canada's magnitude scale shows that quakes between 3.5 and 5.4 are "often felt, but rarely cause damage."
