Inter Miami's Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba suspended 1 game for missing 2025 MLS All-Star Game
"Inter Miami CF's Jordi Alba and Lionel Messi will be unavailable for the club's match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26, due to their absence at this week's Major League Soccer All-Star Game," said MLS in a statement. "Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match.
Both Messi and Alba were voted into the All-Star Game but did not take part in any events earlier this week in Austin, Texas. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives held talks about whether both players would be available for the Cincinnati game.

The league has enforced this policy before after former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus.
On Friday, head coach Javier Mascherano noted Inter Miami's busy schedule of late and why Messi and Alba needed the time away.
"What I think is that if they want to do this type of event, it's great to do it, and the truth is that it's great for the league," Mascherano said. "There shouldn't be a date in the schedule. It's crazy. We've been playing four of the last five games away. We've been playing four away. We've been playing practically every three days.
"Stop for the weekend, the All-Star Game is played on the weekend, and we come back because after Wednesday, today, 48 hours after having played, there are teams that are going to play today, and it's not enough rest for the players either. So, the first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And if football belongs to the players, without players, it doesn't exist."
Messi missed last year's All-Star Game after he suffered an ankle injury representing Argentina at Copa América. Speculation grew that the two Inter Miami stars would not play in this year's event when they both missed Monday's training session.
Following an injury-filled 2024 season, the 38-year-old Messi has played every minute of Inter Miami's last 19 games. The Herons are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games.
Both players were in the Inter Miami lineup during Saturday's 5-1 win over New York Red Bulls. Alba, who was subbed out in the second half with an injury, scored the team's first goal and Messi added two in the second half.
Messi and Alba will be eligible to return on Wednesday when Inter Miami begins Phase One of Leagues Cup play against Liga MX side Atlas F.C.

Deion Sanders cancer diagnosis: Colorado coach reveals he had bladder surgery after tumor
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders and his medical team revealed that he had bladder cancer and had his bladder removed but is now cured from cancer. He held a news conference Monday, July 28 in Colorado to discuss it after being away at his estate in east Texas in May and June while he recovered. He was accompanied at the news conference by his doctor, Janet Kukreja, and Colorado athletic trainer Lauren Askevold. "It's been a tremendous journey," Sanders said. "It's been tough." He said he lost 25 pounds and "can't pee like I used to pee" but was grateful and is starting his third season as coach at Colorado. "I depend on Depends," Sanders said with sense of humor. He also encouraged men to get screened for the condition. "I always knew I was going to coach again," Sanders said, ending any rumors that he planned to retire. Deion Sanders' health history Sanders, 57, declined to disclose his condition until now, even though he acknowledged in late May that he had suffered an unspecified health setback. He missed several events during that time, including the May 24 wedding of his star player from last year, Travis Hunter, along with Colorado's annual youth and high school football camps on campus in June. Recruits who came to campus in June were told he was out sick. He also missed a speaking appearance scheduled for June 8 in Florida but still said he was OK on social media without revealing what the problem was. He underwent more surgeries to fix blood clots in the summer of 2023 and even had to miss a Pac-12 media days event because of it. What does Deion Sanders' contract say in this regard? He agreed to a new five-year contract earlier this year worth more than $10 million per year. It requires him to notify the athletic director if he's absent for more than five consecutive working days. It has a disability provision: 'If after engaging in the interactive process with the University's Center for Disability & Access, Coach is deemed unable to perform the essential functions of his job with or without reasonable accommodation, this Agreement will automatically terminate, and Sanders' salary and all other benefits shall end in the month of such termination notice.' If he decided to retire from coaching, it says he wouldn't have to pay liquidated damages to the university to buy out his contract but would owe some damages if he retired and then changed his mind to coach somewhere else.
