HBO Max just added one of the best crime comedy movies ever made — stream it now
To be fair, this is not the first time I've written about "Get Shorty" at Tom's Guide, and it probably won't be the last. This crime comedy movie has an incredible cast, is well-paced and is based on a great Elmore Leonard novel.
In short, what's not to love about it?
But if you're not sold yet, let's dive into what "Get Shorty" is about and why the star-studded cast alone is worth watching one of the greatest crime comedies ever made.
"Get Shorty" starts as a pure gangster movie, with Miami loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) feuding with a rival mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina). But when Bones is suddenly in charge of Chili's operation, the latter finds themselves going out west to hunt down a gambling debt for the former.
His westward venture ultimately leads Chili to Hollywood director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), and sensing opportunity, instead of throwing Harry off the Santa Monica Pier, Chili pitches him a movie about Chili's career as a loan shark, with himself attached as a producer.
But he's not the only gangster looking to exploit Harry's role as a Hollywood director to make some money, and there's still the issue of Chili never collecting Bones' money. This leads Chili to have to outmaneuver his boss, some drug lords and the DEA if he wants to get his movie made.

This movie is fun, and it's funny.
Whether it's a rental car service trying to convince Chili that an Oldsmobile Silhouette is "The Cadillac of minivans" or Chili throwing a guy down a set of stairs once he learns the guy is a stuntman, there are clever moments littered throughout this movie that will have you letting out a chuckle.
The aforementioned stuntman, by the way? That's James Gandolfini, and he's just part of this movie's loaded cast.
In addition to Travolta, Hackman, Farina and Gandolfini, "Get Shorty" features Delroy Lindo and Jon Gries as drug dealers/movie investors Bo Catlett and Ronnie Wingate. Rene Russo also stars as scream queen Karen Flores, who is both Travolta and Hackman's love interest.
Finally, Danny DeVito plays Martin Weir, an Academy Award-nominated actor who is interested in playing Chili in the movie Chili is working with Harry to sell.
Now, if you don't find the idea of Danny DeVito playing John Travolta in a movie at least a bit amusing, "Get Shorty" might not be for you.
But if you love any of the actors I just listed off, or any of Leonard's other adapted works like "Justified" or "Jackie Brown," then I promise you'll like this crime comedy movie.

Florence Pugh's Yelena leads this scruffy crew of betrayed antiheroes, including Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), U.S. Agents (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and a mysterious sad sack named Bob (Lewis Pullman). 'Sinners' just arrived on Max — celebrate July 4 by streaming the best movie of the year
"Sinners" is finally streaming on Max, and it's the perfect way to enjoy the long July 4 weekend. Yes, you can (incredibly) still go and see Ryan Coogler's vampire horror movie in theaters. I certainly won't judge you if you do, as I think this movie benefits from being seen on the biggest screen possible — with the loudest sound system possible too. But if you don't want to brave the heat or traffic to get to your local cinema, or you don't want to pay $15-$20 for a movie ticket, it's okay. Just enjoy your beers and brats, then boot up Max on your TV at home and hit play on "Sinners." "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan as identical twins Elijah ("Smoke") and Elias ("Stack") Moore. Known as the Smokestack Twins, these two spent years away from home, fighting in World War I and then joining Al Capone's Chicago Outfit after returning to the U.S. from Europe. But now they're back in their Mississippi Delta hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi and they're men on a mission — to start a juke joint for the local Black community From Chicago, they've brought a literal truckful of booze, and they've bought a nearby abandoned sawmill from a racist landlord. They've even recruited their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a blues performer who goes by the name of "Preacher Boy," and a few other local musicians to perform at the juke joint's opening night. Sammie's music is transcendent, and the night looks to be a success. But his incredible music catches the ear of more than just the juke joint's patrons when a band of vampires arrive at the door. It's the third biggest movie at the U.S. box office this year. It's got a 97% "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience rating isn't far behind at 96%. We haven't said a negative word about it here at Tom's Guide, either. Senior Streaming Writer Alix Blackburn declared it her "favorite movie of 2025 so far," and I declared it "'From Dusk Till Dawn' — only much better." Just about everything in this movie works. The sound is incredible, as is the original music. Michael B. Jordan is incredible as both Smoke and Stack and what could have easily been derided as a gimmick instead becomes a brilliant casting choice by Coogler. So this July 4 weekend, go watch "Sinners." Go to a theater, buy or rent from Amazon or Apple or stream it on Max, which, if you don't have it already, is our pick for the best streaming service out there. If you're deaf, there's a version of "Sinners" in Black American Sign Language on Max that will allow you to watch it too. Heck, you can even watch it on HBO on cable or satellite on Saturday, July 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Just whatever you do, watch "Sinners." Bella Ramsey Cast in Channel 4's ‘Maya,' Written by and Co-Starring Daisy Haggard
Bella Ramsey, star of HBO's The Last of Us, will set their sights on a new drama series as Channel 4 confirms the young actor has been cast in Daisy Haggard's Maya. Ramsey will co-lead the cast of the six-part show, created by BAFTA-nominated Haggard (Back to Life, Breeders). Haggard will also star as Ramsey's mother and at the same time, make her directorial debut. Jamie Donoughue co-directs. Forced into a witness protection programme to escape a life-threatening danger, Anna and Maya leave their London lives behind, taking on new identities and relocating to a small rural town in Scotland. 'As they try to adjust to their new reality, the trauma of their past continues to haunt them in the form of two hitmen intent on tracking them down,' a plot synopsis reads. 'As the walls close in, it becomes clear that a dangerous figure from their past is still a looming threat.' The project will be filmed entirely on location in Scotland later this year, with further casting announcements coming in due course. Ramsey said: 'This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny and scarily dark. Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty and I'm so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy's Anna.' Haggard, writer, creator and co-director, said: 'Ever since I first dreamt up this show, there has only ever been one Maya… I wrote the part with Bella so clearly in my head and I honestly still can't believe they want to be part of it.
