HBO Max just added one of the best crime comedy movies ever made — stream it now

"Get Shorty" just got added to HBO Max, and once you're done reading this article, you'll want to boot up the streaming service on your TV and start watching.
To be fair, this is not the first time I've written about "Get Shorty" at Tom's Guide, and it probably won't be the last. This crime comedy movie has an incredible cast, is well-paced and is based on a great Elmore Leonard novel.
In short, what's not to love about it?
But if you're not sold yet, let's dive into what "Get Shorty" is about and why the star-studded cast alone is worth watching one of the greatest crime comedies ever made.
"Get Shorty" starts as a pure gangster movie, with Miami loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) feuding with a rival mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina). But when Bones is suddenly in charge of Chili's operation, the latter finds themselves going out west to hunt down a gambling debt for the former.
His westward venture ultimately leads Chili to Hollywood director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), and sensing opportunity, instead of throwing Harry off the Santa Monica Pier, Chili pitches him a movie about Chili's career as a loan shark, with himself attached as a producer.
But he's not the only gangster looking to exploit Harry's role as a Hollywood director to make some money, and there's still the issue of Chili never collecting Bones' money. This leads Chili to have to outmaneuver his boss, some drug lords and the DEA if he wants to get his movie made.

This movie is fun, and it's funny.
Whether it's a rental car service trying to convince Chili that an Oldsmobile Silhouette is "The Cadillac of minivans" or Chili throwing a guy down a set of stairs once he learns the guy is a stuntman, there are clever moments littered throughout this movie that will have you letting out a chuckle.
The aforementioned stuntman, by the way? That's James Gandolfini, and he's just part of this movie's loaded cast.
In addition to Travolta, Hackman, Farina and Gandolfini, "Get Shorty" features Delroy Lindo and Jon Gries as drug dealers/movie investors Bo Catlett and Ronnie Wingate. Rene Russo also stars as scream queen Karen Flores, who is both Travolta and Hackman's love interest.
Finally, Danny DeVito plays Martin Weir, an Academy Award-nominated actor who is interested in playing Chili in the movie Chili is working with Harry to sell.
Now, if you don't find the idea of Danny DeVito playing John Travolta in a movie at least a bit amusing, "Get Shorty" might not be for you.
But if you love any of the actors I just listed off, or any of Leonard's other adapted works like "Justified" or "Jackie Brown," then I promise you'll like this crime comedy movie.

8 top new movies and shows to stream 4th of July weekend on Netflix, Prime Video and more (July 4-6)

Fourth of July weekend is here, and the streaming lineup is lighting up your screens like fireworks. Celebrate with new shows and movies to watch this weekend on Netflix, Prime Video and more of the best streaming services. It's a movie bonanza this weekend, starting with two action-packed original premieres. 'The Old Guard 2" brings back Charlize Theron and her band of immortal mercenaries, while "Heads of State" sees John Cena and Idris Elba engage in high-stakes political rivalry and oil-and-water comedy. Plus, one of the biggest movies of the year, "Sinners," hits HBO Max. On the TV side, the much-anticipated new season of 'Sandman' is ready to invade your dreams. Here's our guide to what to watch this weekend. You had me at Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman wielding katanas. The first 'Old Guard' was a standout 2020 gem: a raw, stylish action movie anchored by Theron's battle-worn Andy leading her band of immortal soldiers. The sequel ups the ante with Thurman as Discord, the oldest (and moodiest) immortal around. Five years after the original sliced its way to Netflix glory, the crew reunites with even sharper blades and deeper grudges. Show up for the brutal but beautiful action scenes, stick around for the brooding existential crisis. Streaming now on Netflix John Cena as a doofus American president and Idris Elba as Britain's gruff prime minister? Together, they make an action buddy comedy duo I would vote for. 'Heads of State' finds these feuding leaders on the run after an Air Force One assassination attempt tanks their PR stunt. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. After the plane crashes, Cena and Elba bicker as they're forced to rely on each other to make it out alive, while Priyanka Chopra Jones shows as an MI6 agent who's the only adult in the room. 'Heads of State' offers good old-fashioned action mixed with snarky banter — a great choice for a popcorn movie night. Streaming now on Prime Video Ryan Coogler's completely original vampire tale hits like a shot of moonshine. The director turns the Mississippi Delta into a blood-soaked blues opera, where Michael B. Jordan plays not one but two bootlegging brothers trying to outrun their sins. It's 1932, and twins Smoke and Stack are back home to open a music haven, only to find something far more dangerous than Jim Crow lurking in the shadows. 'Sinners' is part horror, part Southern fable and part fever dream — unlike anything I've seen in a while. Yeah, it's a vampire movie, but also a celebration of Black resistance, joy and survival. Streaming now on Max Marvel's Thunderbolts is less Avengers, more group therapy with weapons. Florence Pugh's Yelena leads this scruffy crew of betrayed antiheroes, including Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), U.S. Agents (Wyatt Russell), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and a mysterious sad sack named Bob (Lewis Pullman). When they're forced into a mission by the very shady CIA boss (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), they must contend with bitter rivalries, bruised egos and a lot of emotional baggage. This isn't the usual shiny superhero team-up — and exactly what Marvel needed to shake up its franchise. Streaming now with purchase on Amazon or Apple This isn't "Swan Lake," but rather a 'John Wick' spinoff sends Ana de Armas twirling through the action franchise's universe with a grudge to settle. Set between 'Parabellum' and 'Chapter 4,' the flick follows Eve Macarro, an orphaned dancer trained by the Ruska Roma, a ballet school doubling as an assassin factory. When her father's murderers surface, she breaks ranks to hunt them down, slicing through an army of killers with everything from samurai swords to ice skates. Anjelica Huston rules the school with iron poise, and Keanu Reeves makes a quick but crucial appearance. Streaming now with purchase on Amazon or Apple The fantasy drama kicks off its final season with a first volume that throws Dream (Tom Sturridge) into serious hot water. Hell's out for payback, his family's falling apart and old ghosts keep haunting him. As the Lord of Dreams battles demons, untangles conspiracies and meets new characters like Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles), the story twists and turns. The second volume arrives July 24, with a special bonus episode coming July 31. Brace yourself for a wild, visually stunning and chaotic farewell to this intense series. All 6 episodes streaming now on Netflix The finale of 'Ironheart' serves up three intense episodes that push Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) to her limits. Chicago's streets turn into a battleground where advanced technology collides with dark magic, and long-standing tensions finally boil over. Riri must tap into all her brilliance to safeguard what's important. This Marvel miniseries wraps up with gripping action, heartfelt moments and a clear message: This rising hero's journey is only beginning. Episodes 4-6 streaming now on Disney Plus The 'Duster' finale speeds forward with a whirlwind of double-crosses, kidnappings and mysteries that may give you whiplash. Jim Ellis (Josh Holloway) faces his biggest challenge yet as he digs deeper into the truth about his brother Joey. Add to that the abduction of his handler, FBI Agent Nina Hayes (Rachel Hilson), which forces him to decide whether to save her or himself. And that stolen case everyone's after? It holds the secret to a bombshell that could shatter everything. With season 2 still uncertain, 'Duster' ends on a note that'll have fans hungry for more. Episode 8 streaming now on HBO Max

'Sinners' just arrived on Max — celebrate July 4 by streaming the best movie of the year

"Sinners" is finally streaming on Max, and it's the perfect way to enjoy the long July 4 weekend. Yes, you can (incredibly) still go and see Ryan Coogler's vampire horror movie in theaters. I certainly won't judge you if you do, as I think this movie benefits from being seen on the biggest screen possible — with the loudest sound system possible too. But if you don't want to brave the heat or traffic to get to your local cinema, or you don't want to pay $15-$20 for a movie ticket, it's okay. Just enjoy your beers and brats, then boot up Max on your TV at home and hit play on "Sinners." "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan as identical twins Elijah ("Smoke") and Elias ("Stack") Moore. Known as the Smokestack Twins, these two spent years away from home, fighting in World War I and then joining Al Capone's Chicago Outfit after returning to the U.S. from Europe. But now they're back in their Mississippi Delta hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi and they're men on a mission — to start a juke joint for the local Black community From Chicago, they've brought a literal truckful of booze, and they've bought a nearby abandoned sawmill from a racist landlord. They've even recruited their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton), a blues performer who goes by the name of "Preacher Boy," and a few other local musicians to perform at the juke joint's opening night. Sammie's music is transcendent, and the night looks to be a success. But his incredible music catches the ear of more than just the juke joint's patrons when a band of vampires arrive at the door. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "Sinners" has been a hit in every sense of the word. It's the third biggest movie at the U.S. box office this year. It's got a 97% "fresh" rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience rating isn't far behind at 96%. We haven't said a negative word about it here at Tom's Guide, either. Senior Streaming Writer Alix Blackburn declared it her "favorite movie of 2025 so far," and I declared it "'From Dusk Till Dawn' — only much better." Just about everything in this movie works. The sound is incredible, as is the original music. Michael B. Jordan is incredible as both Smoke and Stack and what could have easily been derided as a gimmick instead becomes a brilliant casting choice by Coogler. So this July 4 weekend, go watch "Sinners." Go to a theater, buy or rent from Amazon or Apple or stream it on Max, which, if you don't have it already, is our pick for the best streaming service out there. If you're deaf, there's a version of "Sinners" in Black American Sign Language on Max that will allow you to watch it too. Heck, you can even watch it on HBO on cable or satellite on Saturday, July 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Just whatever you do, watch "Sinners." Forced into a witness protection programme to escape a life-threatening danger, Anna and Maya leave their London lives behind, taking on new identities and relocating to a small rural town in Scotland. 'As they try to adjust to their new reality, the trauma of their past continues to haunt them in the form of two hitmen intent on tracking them down,' a plot synopsis reads. 'As the walls close in, it becomes clear that a dangerous figure from their past is still a looming threat.' The project will be filmed entirely on location in Scotland later this year, with further casting announcements coming in due course. Ramsey said: 'This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny and scarily dark. Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty and I'm so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy's Anna.' Haggard, writer, creator and co-director, said: 'Ever since I first dreamt up this show, there has only ever been one Maya… I wrote the part with Bella so clearly in my head and I honestly still can't believe they want to be part of it. Bella is pure magic, just insanely talented, and I can't wait for us to work together. I'm also thrilled to be taking the leap into directing, and excited to have the opportunity to co-direct the series alongside the brilliant Jamie Donoughue.' Maya was commissioned for Channel 4 by Ollie Madden, director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama and Gemma Boswell, commissioning editor, drama.
