HBO Max just added one of the best crime comedy movies ever made — stream it now

"Get Shorty" just got added to HBO Max, and once you're done reading this article, you'll want to boot up the streaming service on your TV and start watching. To be fair, this is not the first time I've written about "Get Shorty" at Tom's Guide, and it probably won't be the last. This crime comedy movie has an incredible cast, is well-paced and is based on a great Elmore Leonard novel. In short, what's not to love about it? But if you're not sold yet, let's dive into what "Get Shorty" is about and why the star-studded cast alone is worth watching one of the greatest crime comedies ever made. "Get Shorty" starts as a pure gangster movie, with Miami loan shark Chili Palmer (John Travolta) feuding with a rival mobster, Ray "Bones" Barboni (Dennis Farina). But when Bones is suddenly in charge of Chili's operation, the latter finds themselves going out west to hunt down a gambling debt for the former. His westward venture ultimately leads Chili to Hollywood director Harry Zimm (Gene Hackman), and sensing opportunity, instead of throwing Harry off the Santa Monica Pier, Chili pitches him a movie about Chili's career as a loan shark, with himself attached as a producer. But he's not the only gangster looking to exploit Harry's role as a Hollywood director to make some money, and there's still the issue of Chili never collecting Bones' money. This leads Chili to have to outmaneuver his boss, some drug lords and the DEA if he wants to get his movie made. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. This movie is fun, and it's funny. Whether it's a rental car service trying to convince Chili that an Oldsmobile Silhouette is "The Cadillac of minivans" or Chili throwing a guy down a set of stairs once he learns the guy is a stuntman, there are clever moments littered throughout this movie that will have you letting out a chuckle. The aforementioned stuntman, by the way? That's James Gandolfini, and he's just part of this movie's loaded cast. In addition to Travolta, Hackman, Farina and Gandolfini, "Get Shorty" features Delroy Lindo and Jon Gries as drug dealers/movie investors Bo Catlett and Ronnie Wingate. Rene Russo also stars as scream queen Karen Flores, who is both Travolta and Hackman's love interest. Finally, Danny DeVito plays Martin Weir, an Academy Award-nominated actor who is interested in playing Chili in the movie Chili is working with Harry to sell. Now, if you don't find the idea of Danny DeVito playing John Travolta in a movie at least a bit amusing, "Get Shorty" might not be for you. But if you love any of the actors I just listed off, or any of Leonard's other adapted works like "Justified" or "Jackie Brown," then I promise you'll like this crime comedy movie. Stream "Get Shorty" on HBO Max now Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

‘Second Miracle on the Hudson': Chili the Chihuahua mix goes missing for 10 days — then kayaker spots him in NYC river

And they say cats have nine lives. Chili the Chihuahua mix ran off from his stricken Manhattan owners and was missing for 10 days last month — before an eagle-eyed kayaker plucked the oil-covered, malnourished pooch from the water off Manhattan in what locals are calling the 'Second Miracle on the Hudson.'' The dogged 8-month-old pup is now happily back with owners Gabby Porter and Gianni Calistro, both 27, in their Hudson Yards apartment, a fairytale ending to one of the worst weeks of the young couple's lives. 8 Chili the Chihuahua mix has been happily reunited with Manhattan owners Gabby Porter and Gianni Calistro since going on the lam for 10 days — and ending up in the Hudson River. LP Media 'It's really a miracle. He really did fight to come back home,' Porter, an architect, told The Post. The dramatic tale initially unfolded June 11 when Porter and Chili were wrapping up a double pet date with a friend and her golden retriever in the West Village. Chili, uninterested in splitting from his flaxen-haired four-legged friend, wriggled out of his harness and bolted for one last goodbye lick — but instead ran directly into traffic. 'He kind of got hit by a car. A car bonked him and slammed on his brakes. Then he got spooked, so he went running down south, and we ran after him — but he's so fast,' recalled Porter, whose story was first reported by local outlet 42nd Street. 8 The 8-month-old puppy was malnourished, dehydrated and covered in motor oil when he was plucked from the river. Courtesy Gabby Porter Porter and her friend ran after Chili, but the tiny canine was in the wind. The dog's frantic owners then logged more than 10 hours apiece each of the next four days — including two days they took off from work — canvassing the West Side Highway and plastering every pole, street sign and window with 'lost dog' posters. 'I was screaming his name in the streets, it was really sad,' Porter said, with Calistro adding that, 'It got to a point where it felt like we were going in circles because we didn't know which way to go.' The signs and a series of social-media posts drew some leads: Tipsters called to say they saw Chili at Pier 40 the night he disappeared. 8 Chili was found 200 feet offshore, more than the length of an Olympic swimming pool. Courtesy Gabby Porter Security cameras along the waterfront also caught sight of the pooch that night, but then Chili seemed to vanish into thin air. The next week was grueling — and the couple's grief was intensified by perverted prank callers who claimed to have eaten Chili and others who callously barked into the line. 'Those calls would really make our hearts stop for a second,' Calistro said. 'Chili was kind of like the start to our family,' he said. 'We've only had him for six months, and he's already made such a positive impact on our lives.' 8 Joseph Scarpetta noticed the poor pup drowning and headed the rescue effort for him. LP Media 8 'He really did fight to come back home,' Porter said of her pooch. LP Media 8 Scarpetta recognized Chili from missing fliers posted all along the West Side Highway. Facebook / Gianni Calistro By the time the kayaker called the couple Saturday, June 21, to say he found Chili in 'the river,' Porter and Calistro's faith had worn to the bone. They assumed it was another cruel joke — until a picture of their beloved Chili, covered in motor oil and malnourished, was sent. The dog had been found 200 feet off shore — more than the length of an Olympic swimming pool — by the kayaker enjoying the sights around Pier 26. 'There was a huge pile of trash floating in the water, and within this pile of trash, there was something bobbing up and down. It was a dog, so I started screaming, 'There's a dog in the water!' ' said avid kayaker and pet lover Joseph Scarpetta, 26, to The Post. 'Immediately, I recognized the dog. … I had seen fliers all over the place for this dog,' he said. 8 'Chili was kind of like the start to our family. We've only had him for six months, and he's already made such a positive impact on our lives,' Calistro said. LP Media Scarpetta raced toward Chili and shouted for other nearby kayakers to help lift the dog out of the water. 'It was literally the most devastating, sad visual ever,' he said. 'The best way that I can explain it — this is kind of morbid — but you know this scene from 'Titanic' where Rose is letting go of Jack and Jack is drifting under the water? That's what was going on. 'This dog clearly didn't know how to swim or tread water, so it couldn't really get its head up, so it was just completely submerged like ten inches under the water.' The currents were strong, and Chili was frightened, so it ultimately took four kayakers to yank the pooch into the boat and take him back to shore — where he was soon reunited with Porter. 8 Chili doesn't pull on his leash anymore, his owners said. Facebook / Gianni Calistro His owners rushed him to a vet center, where workers ruled he was healthy but severely malnourished and dehydrated and likely had barely eaten during his 10 days on the lam. They had to cut sections of his fur where the oil was so saturated. It's not clear where Chili had spent all of his days on the loose. Calistro believes he hunkered down under a pier until he was somehow taken out to sea. Scarpetta wonders if Chili slipped over the pier edge through the large holes in the fencing — which he says poses a safety hazard to small children, as well. Either way, his rescue has drawn comparisons to the original 'Miracle on the Hudson,' when US Airways Capt. Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger made a successful emergency landing of an Airbus on the river in January 2009, 42nd Street said. As for Chili, he is now as happy and friendly as ever, though a few pounds lighter, and has apparently lost his penchant for leash pulling. Porter and Calistro bought Chili a new, tighter harness, anyway — just in case.

If I could change one low-level, totally insignificant thing about me, I would turn myself into the kind of person who enjoys air travel. I love going places, but I hate the actual process. So, I try to gussy up travel days to minimize my own discomfort. I'll treat myself to a fun snack (Swedish Fish, probably), download a new book, and maybe even indulge in an airport Chili's margarita (or three). But invariably, without fail, what really saves the day is my outfit. Enter Leset. How I love thee; let me count the ways. Leset is the wardrobe-staple, base-layer brand you've been unwittingly missing your whole life. Picture: the softest matching separates you can imagine and perfectly versatile essentials that you'll want to wear throughout your trip. It's a capsule dream come true. If you're the carry-on only type, you could get away with a duffle full of Leset and little else. Honest! Katie Holmes was recently spotted in the brand's bestselling Pointelle Slim Fit Tee—just one of many A-listers who swear by Lest. Hailey Bieber has worn the Arielle trousers, over and over again. Even Meghan Markle has a cozy sleeveless Leset turtleneck that whispers chic. I've never had to go straight from a flight to an important business meeting or event—and thank goodness; I'm not fit for public consumption after being airborne—so I've never had to travel in slacks or heels or anything like that. But! If I did, I already know my trusty Leset coords would deliver, keeping me comfortable yet polished for whatever awaits. I'm writing this story because I've had one too many people in the TSA line ask where my pants/tee/cardigan is from, so I'm sharing my secret with the world. Next time a chatty seatmate ignores my don't-talk-to-me headphones and hoodie combo to inquire, I'll just point at the tag. It's always going to be Leset, babe. Hand, Merritt face off in Monroe County Legislature primary

The Democrat and Chronicle provided questions to the candidates in the Republican 2025 primary in Monroe County Legislative District 3, which includes most of the town of Chili. The two candidates running for the Republican nomination are Scott and Jack Merritt. Outgoing County Legislator Tracy DiFlorio, a Republican, is running for the state Assembly. The winner will face Democrat Marvin Stepherson in November. Both candidates were asked four questions and given 150 words to respond to each. More: What to know about the 2025 primary election in Monroe County Scott Hand: I bring 35 years of experience working at UPS, where I learned the value of reliability, efficiency, and accountability—principles I believe are essential in public service. Over the course of my career, I've solved complex logistical challenges, and delivered results under pressure—literally and figuratively. I was also in a position to stand up for the rights of fellow workers and ensure their voices were heard. In that role, I gained firsthand experience negotiating, resolving conflicts, and building consensus—skills that directly translate to the collaborative work required in the Monroe County Legislature. My career has been defined by commitment: to my coworkers, to accountability, and to doing what's right, even when it's hard. I know how to advocate, how to listen, and how to deliver. That's the kind of leadership I'll bring to the Legislature—grounded in real-world experience and dedicated to the people I serve. Jack Merritt: I've spent my career fighting for conservative values, working for several Republican elected officials from Republican Senator Rob Ortt to the Republican Conference of the Legislature itself. I've also served on numerous campaigns to elect strong Republican leaders across Monroe County. As a Chili resident raising my family here, I understand the issues we face because I live them firsthand. I know how government works and how to get results without the politics. I'll bring a common-sense, accountable approach to county government and always put the needs of Chili residents first. Merritt: I'm running to fight for working families who built this community and to help the next generation stay here in Monroe County. Too many young people are leaving because they don't see opportunity here, and too many of those who spent their lives here feel forced away. They're being driven out by high taxes, rising crime across the county, and a lack of opportunity. I want to change that. I'm running to protect our values, restore trust in local government, and ensure Chili families have a real voice in the decisions that affect them. Hand: After 35 years at UPS, I've had a front-row seat to the everyday challenges working families face in Monroe County. I decided to run for the Monroe County Legislature because I want to bring real-world experience, common sense, and dedication to a role that directly impacts people's lives. I've always believed that showing up, following through, and doing the right thing—especially when no one's watching—are the cornerstones of leadership. Now, I'm ready to take that mindset into public service and work for the kind of practical, people-centered policies our communities deserve. I want to be part of building a county government that listens, acts, and delivers for everyone. Hand: One of the greatest challenges facing Chili is managing growth in a way that preserves the character of the town while meeting the needs of a changing population. With new housing developments, commercial projects, and infrastructure upgrades underway, it's essential that we plan smart—balancing development with green space, traffic flow, and access to services. For Monroe County as a whole, affordability and access are key concerns. Whether it's housing, transportation, or healthcare, too many residents are struggling to keep up. We also face challenges in maintaining aging infrastructure, supporting small businesses, and ensuring that every part of the county—urban, suburban, and rural—has a voice in decision-making. I believe we need leadership that listens, plans ahead, and puts people first. That's the kind of approach I want to bring to the Legislature. Merritt: Our county is seeing more crime, more excuses, and less accountability. We need safer streets, better infrastructure, and leaders who will stand up for residents. County-wide, families are struggling with affordability, EMS delays, and rising property taxes. People feel ignored and overburdened. The county must refocus on the basics: safety, roads, and reliable services - without wasting taxpayer money on political pet projects or failed programs. Merritt: County government needs to get back to doing its basic job: keeping families safe, roads drivable, and taxes low. We need fewer press conferences and more results. That means restoring trust, investing in what matters, and actually listening to westside towns like Chili. I'll fight to make government more transparent, more efficient, and more responsive to the everyday concerns of working families and taxpayers across Monroe County. Hand: Throughout my career at UPS, I built a reputation for showing up, solving problems, and doing what makes sense—not what's politically convenient. I'm running for the Monroe County Legislature because I believe our government needs more of that same practical, grounded approach. To me, common sense means listening first, cutting through the noise, and making decisions that actually work for everyday people. It means investing in the essentials—safe neighborhoods, reliable infrastructure, accessible services—while keeping a close eye on how taxpayer dollars are spent. It means putting politics aside to get things done. We need leaders who understand the real-world impact of every policy and who don't overcomplicate what should be simple. That's the kind of representative I intend to be—clear-headed, level-handed, and always working in the interest of the people I serve. — Steve Howe reports on weather, climate and the Great Lakes for the Democrat and Chronicle. An RIT graduate, he has covered myriad topics over the years, including public safety, local government, national politics and economic development in New York and Utah.
