KRASNODAR, Russia - FC Krasnodar won their first Russian Premier League title on Saturday, halting Zenit St Petersburg's six-year winning streak, but are unlikely to play in Europe next season.
Russia's national team and club sides were banned from European competitions after Moscow invaded Ukraine in 2022, prompting numerous sanctions.
FC Krasnodar, from the city in southern Russia, were founded in 2008 by the local retail magnate and billionaire Sergei Galitsky.
They finished second in the Russian Premier League last year and reached the Russian Cup final in 2014 and 2023, losing both on penalties.
Krasnodar beat Dinamo Moscow 3-0 on Saturday to finish one point ahead of Zenit St Petersburg.
They have Russian international goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev and striker Alexander Chernikov in their squad, along with Armenian midfielder and team captain Eduard Spertsyan.
Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba opened the scoring in the title-clinching game against Dinamo Moscow.
UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said last month that Russian clubs would be readmitted into the continent's competitions once the war in Ukraine is over.
"Of course, it's regrettable. But bring on the Champions League, we will show you!," said Krasnodar fan Andrey Bragin outside the club's Ozon Arena stadium.
The black-and-green team, also known as the Bulls, have experience of playing in Europe, finishing third in their Champions League group in 2020 after facing Chelsea, Sevilla and Rennes.
Krasnodar manager Murad Musayev, 41, said he was overwhelmed with joy at winning the Russian title.

The retiree said she had a 'dodgy hip and my daughter is heavily pregnant' but that they would focus on keeping cool and enjoying the day. It was provisionally the hottest start to Wimbledon on record, according to the Met Office. The BBC said temperatures at the All England Club had topped 32 deg C by mid-afternoon. The previous record was set on June 25, 2001, when the mercury tipped 29.3 deg C. Parts of the UK are currently in the grip of a second heatwave in a month, according to weather experts. London start-up boss Sean Tipper said he had made sure to come prepared. 'Wimbledon when it's really hot is quite sweaty,' he said on a family day out with his wife, mother and aunt. The 31-year-old said they had brought hats and sunglasses plus 'a mini-fan and good hope'. 'Last time we were very hot so this time we've got rose (wine) in a cooler,' he joked. The hottest June day ever recorded in the UK was 35.6 deg C on June 28, 1976. But Wimbledon is more used to making headlines for the rain than the heat. Tournament chief executive Sally Bolton said they were 'absolutely ready for it and actually delighted that it's sunny and not wet like it was last year'. For Chilean tennis fan Maria Verdugo, 40, there were pros and cons to enjoying tennis in different weather conditions. 'On balance, though, I prefer the sun, it's more exciting,' she said, clutching a glass of Pimm's with plenty of ice. Under a heat rule to protect players' health, officials will be taking heat stress monitor readings 30 minutes before the start of play and then at 2pm and 5pm. The rule allows a 10-minute break to be taken at certain points in a match when the heat stress index is at or above 30.1C. Protocols are also in place to look after ball-boys and ball-girls on court who have access to cooling scarves. Some visitors admitted they were wilting in the heat. 'It's horrible, unbearable,' said retiree Linden Barnett. 'You can't sit in it, we have to keep coming out to cool down,' she said, adding that the players 'must be feeling it'. 'I need a long cold drink, preferably with gin in it, at least then I'd forget how uncomfortable I am,' added youth worker Mel Megson, shielding herself from the relentless sunshine under some shrubbery. Novak Djokovic still dreams of ending his career as the most successful player in tennis history even as he watches a new generation take charge. The 38-year-old has been tied with Margaret Court on 24 Grand Slam titles since winning his most recent major prize at the 2023 US Open. The Serb has seen two-time defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner share the past six Grand Slams between them. Sinner then lost early at this month's Halle grass-court tournament but has a promising track record at Wimbledon, reaching the semi-finals in 2023 and the quarter-finals last year. The 23-year-old, who faces compatriot Luca Nardi in the first round, says he feels 'ready to play'. 'I feel like that I'm playing great, great tennis on grass,' he said. 'Hopefully I can show this also in the match court.' Defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova is feeling her way back to fitness after pulling out of the Eastbourne Open with a thigh problem. The world No. 16 has endured a difficult time since defeating Italy's Jasmine Paolini in the Wimbledon final in 2024, playing just six matches in 2025. She was out of action until May after suffering a back injury and lost in the second round of the recent French Open. But at least she looks likely to be fit to take to the court against Alexandra Eala on July 1. 'I had to have couple days off where I didn't really play any tennis, but I did some off-court stuff,' said the 29-year-old Czech. 'I've been feeling every day a little bit better, so I'm really happy with that.' Eala, ranked 56th in the world, could be a dangerous opponent. The 20-year-old made history by becoming the first Filipina to reach a WTA final with her run to the Eastbourne title match last week.
