Zeitz MOCAA honours late chief curator Koyo Kouoh

Time Out28-05-2025
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) in Cape Town will close its doors on Thursday to honour the life and legacy of its Executive Director and Chief Curator, Koyo Kouoh, who passed away unexpectedly on 10 May in Switzerland.
Kouoh was a towering figure in contemporary art and known as a visionary, cultural leader and a fierce advocate for African and Afro-diasporic artistic expression.
Appointed in 2019, she led Zeitz MOCAA through a transformative period, redefining the museum's curatorial voice and positioning it as a globally recognised platform for contemporary African art.
Her sudden passing came just months after she made history as the first African Artistic Director of the Venice Biennale, where she was curating the 61st edition titled 'In Minor Keys', scheduled to open in May 2026. The Biennale has confirmed that Kouoh's vision will still shape the exhibition, to be realised by her core team.

In a tribute shared via LinkedIn, David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront and Trustee of Zeitz MOCAA, said, 'It has been with shock and a profound sadness that I received news of the sudden passing of Koyo… In getting to know Koyo over the years since her acceptance of the job to lead Zeitz MOCAA, I, in the role of Trustee and Co-Chair of the museum, had come to appreciate a true sense of her love for what art and artists bring to the world.
'She held an intense conviction that elevating African art was her calling and she extended herself to creating spaces and relationships that would make this possible. Her passing is untimely, and I am going to miss her counsel and friendship immensely,' said Green.

Since departing from the royal family, the pair have had countless media contracts together and separately to share their life in California. It was once seen as a secure form of income for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but now experts say it's a sign that their time is running out. Speaking on The Sun's Royal Exclusive show, Robert Jobson said Prince Harry's popularity is dwindling as the public focus their attention on the younger royals, Prince William's children, George, Charlotte and Louis. He said: "I think the show's moving on. When we're talking about when we were in New Zealand all those years ago, he was a big noise then. "The vibe was all positive about him. The vibe isn't positive about him now." The royal expert's comments come after Sky News royal editor Rhiannon Mills exposed the Prince's rude side. Footage showed Prince Harry scold Rhiannon back in 2019 while he visited a health clinic in a remote village in Malawi as part of the Sussexes' African tour. As he walked past her, she asked 'oh, why is it so important for you to come here?' "And he looked at me and said 'oh, well just go and ask those people over there'. And I probably inside thought, hang on a minute, I'm not gonna leave this one," she revealed. "I said, well, is that why it's so important for you to come here? And then he turned around and just said, 'Rhiannon, don't behave like that'. 4 An insider said Prince Harry feared he would become irrelevant when Prince George turned 18 Credit: Splash Harry & Meghan peace talks motive EXPOSED - they'll beg for handouts now Netflix deal's scrapped "And then got in his car and drove off. I felt like I'd looked like an idiot. "He looked really patronising. Nobody came out of it looking good." Robert added that the couple were trying to monetise on their celebrity status as they know other royals will soon take the limelight. "They're 40 year olds. They're not young royals," the royal expert explained. "They're different now. The vibe is different. The whole mood and shift will now go on to George, Charlotte, and Louis. And they will become really, frankly, bit part players. "Now they won't like that. And that's probably what this is all about, making sure they've got a presence, a brand to monetise, because pretty soon they're going to be really so far removed from the main game, they're not going to be able to get as much money out of being royals." The Times' royal correspondent Valentine Low wrote the book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown, and revealed Prince Harry feared he was becoming irrelevant. An insider told the author: "He had this thing that he had a shelf life. He was fixated [on] this. He would compare himself with his uncle [Prince Andrew]. 'He would say, 'I have this time to make this impact. Because I can,' until Prince George turned 18. Speaking on The Sun's royal show, Robert agreed, adding: "You know, he'll be a bald 50-year-old prince. Someone formerly known as Prince, that's what he will be." Once popular with the younger generation, Prince Harry will lose his spot to the future king, Prince George. "They'll be thinking, who is this guy? They won't even know who he is," Robert added. The Lifestyle and cookery show With Love, Meghan only ranked at number 383 in Netflix's six-monthly engagement report this year, with just 5.3million viewers across the globe. While Prince Harry's docuseries Polo, attracted a disastrous 500,000 views globally in the first six months of release. And it is not the Sussexes' first media deal that has gone south. Their reported $20million podcasting deal with Spotify was terminated in June 2023, with senior Spotify executive Bill Simmons labelling the duo 'f***ing grifters'.

Coronation Street's Jack P Shepherd gears up to marry Hanni Treweek after stag do snub

Loved-up Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd has shared excitement for Saturday's big day on social media, as he prepares to marry Hanni Treweek this weekend Coronation Street's Jack P Shepherd is getting married this Saturday (July 26) after deciding against having a stag do. The 37-year-old The Coronation Street actor, who also won Celebrity Big Brother this year, is now set to walk down the aisle with long-term girlfriend Hanni Treweek. ‌ The loved-up Corrie star has shared a sweet Instagram story ahead of the big day. The post from Jack is a re-share from Hanni's account and shows three rows of bunting with the words 'bride to be' included on the decoration with spaces for photos to be added in. ‌ The photos added shows highlight's from the couple's sweet relationship, which took a new level last year when Jack popped the question to Hanni on an African safari. As Hanni filmed a glimpse of the wedding decor, she wrote: "Happy wedding week baby!!!" followed by a white heart emoji before she tagged Jack, who re-shared the post with a heart eye emoji to share his excitement. ‌ The couple will marry tomorrow and the exact location of the wedding has been kept secret. The pair got engaged in June 2024 while on a Tanzania safari trip in East Africa. But there's been one tradition Corrie star Jack P Shepherd skipped - he didn't have a stag do and didn't want one. A few months ago he admitted: "No, I don't like the idea of going on a stag do where someone just takes the p*** out of you all weekend and you're the butt of every joke and you have to dress up like a f***ing baby.' ‌ Hanni didn't have a hen party either, but now the happy couple are just one day away from tying the knot and preparations have been in full swing for some weeks. A previous post two weeks ago included a look 'behind the scenes' as the couple prepared to get hitched. Events organiser Taylor Lynn Corporation shared a video of Hanni smiling with a huge white shoulder bag with the word 'Bride' in silver lettering as she walked along a street in a casual outfit and flip flops. Other shots showed both Jack P Shepherd and wife-to-be Hanni in sunglasses, happily making their way to the event planners Taylor Lynn Corporation in Manchester. The planning company then wrote on the Instagram post: 'The countdown is officially on for Jack & Hanni's big day. But first, a little behind-the-scenes magic with the bride-to-be.' ‌ The couple actually met at a mutual friend's wedding during the time that Hanni worked as a storyliner on Coronation Street (from 2018 to 2020). In a rare interview discussing his personal life in April 2025 he said: "The wedding is this year. We're very excited. It's all done. It's all paid for. It should be a really good day actually. I love a wedding. Absolutely love a wedding. Weddings and funerals. "I really like funerals as well, in a weird way, because they're never that sad. You go and all you ever do at funerals is laugh, I think. Do you know what I mean? And you all get sandwiches, you know what you're wearing, you have a few drinks, you have a few laughs."

I saw Prince Harry's rude side in Malawi – he was a patronising idiot and even his team were LIVID, expert slams

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A ROYAL expert claimed she saw Prince Harry's rude side while on a trip to Malawi and he was a "patronising" idiot. Sky News royal editor Rhiannon Mills made the comments while appearing on The Sun's Royal Exclusive show. Harry had invited the media as he visited a health clinic in a remote village in Malawi as part of the Sussexes' African tour. He talked to health officials and children suffering from malaria and Aids before being ushered to a waiting vehicle by palace officials. But Harry appeared annoyed when he was asked an unscheduled question about the visit as he was whisked away. Rhiannon told The Sun's Matt Wilkinson that she'd had a good working relationship with the prince previously, but this time "he got very grumpy". She said: "New Zealand was classic Harry. "I did this interview with him, he said 'I'd love to have kids right now'. "We had this really good rapport. It wasn't a friendship, it was friendliness, but he was always really helpful." So when she asked him a question in Malawi, she was shocked at his response. "Fast forward to the South Africa trip, which was sort of seen as quite make or break for them, because they'd had some negative headlines over the holidays. And actually that trip was going really well. "We were flying around in these little planes with him. "We were in Malawi and I was a bit under the cosh because I had to do kind of a special to end off the week. "So as he was about to walk past me, I thought, right, I'll do what I've done over the years. I'll just ask him a quick question. We've all done it, the dreaded doorstep. "It was a terrible question. It was a rubbish question. I just sort of said, 'oh, why is it so important for you to come here?' "And he looked at me and said 'oh, well just go and ask those people over there'. And I probably inside thought, hang on a minute, I'm not gonna leave this one. "I said, well, is that why it's so important for you to come here? And then he turned around and just said, 'Rhiannon, don't behave like that'. "And then got in his car and drove off. I felt like I'd looked like an idiot. "He looked really patronising. Nobody came out of it looking good." She added: "Anyway, it all blew up with his team. They were livid. "And then it was when we got back to Johannesburg and it was in that evening that that letter dropped, the 10 paragraph letter, accusing the Royal Press Pack of everything under the sun and saying that 'we're gonna sue the Mail on Sunday'. "So immediately I just realised, I frankly kicked the bear and I just didn't realise it at the time." The Duke of Sussex released the unprecedented statement on his personal website, complaining of 'relentless propaganda' against his wife Meghan Markle. He went on to announce the couple are launching legal action against the Mail on Sunday newspaper, which published extracts of a letter written by Meghan to her father Thomas Markle. 5 The Duke of Sussex takes part in a discussion with young people during a visit to the Mauwa Health Centre in Blantyre, Malawi, on day nine of the Royal tour of Africa Credit: PA:Press Association
