Ben Shelton takes down Francis Tiafoe in DC Open quarter-finals
Shelton and Tiafoe are no strangers to one another. They played doubles together a few days ago and have now met four times in ATP Tour events.
"We know tennis is a long journey. We're going to play each other a bunch of times. Especially, we've already played on the hard courts, we've already played twice at the US Open, and he beat me the most recent time. It's tough not to cheer for a guy like that,' Shelton said.
The first set stayed on serve until the 11th game, when Tiafoe broke Shelton to love. The former Florida Gator bounced back immediately, breaking Tiafoe and forcing a tie-break. Shelton used his power forehand to claim the first set, delivering a 144 mph serve in the process.
Shelton broke first in the second set at 3-3, and it was cruise control from there. The win puts Shelton ahead, 3-1, in the Head2Head series. Shelton already secured the No. 7 spot on the rankings by making the quarter-finals, but every win gets him closer and closer to No. 6 Novak Djokovic, who many consider to be the greatest of all time. It's a 600-point gap to close, but winning this tournament would cut that number in half.
Winning the Washington 500 seems very doable with top-seeded Taylor Fritz falling in the quarters against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Shelton is now the highest-seeded player remaining in the tournament. Still, he will have to get by Davidovich Fokina before facing the winner of the 7-seed Alex de Minaur vs. lucky loser Corentin Moutet.
De Minaur and Moutet are scheduled to begin not before 7 p.m. ET, and Shelton vs. Davidovich Fokina will follow — so drink some coffee. Fans can watch the match on the Tennis Channel using cable or streaming, and the TennisTV app is also an option (subscription required).

Anderson serves as the top backup offensive tackle, while Trice may need to compete for a roster spot in a loaded CB room — which makes the timing of his hamstring injury even more unfortunate. Taylor Fritz beats Canadian Gabriel Diallo in Toronto in 3rd round of National Bank Open
TORONTO -- Second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the United States beat 6-foot-8 Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 on Friday night in the third round of the National Bank Open. 'I thought the crowd was (very) nice for me playing the last player in the tournament from Canada,' Fritz said. 'I thought it was going to be a little bit more hostile. But I guess everyone is just so nice. I've dealt with a lot worse.' Fritz set up a fourth-round match in the hard-court event with 19th-seeded Jiri Lehecka of Czechia. Lehecka beat 15th-seeded Arthur Fils of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 27-year-old Fritz is No. 4 in the world. He has 10 career ATP Tour titles, winning this year on grass at Eastbourne and Stuttgart. In the late match, fourth-seeded Ben Shelton outlasted fellow American Brandon Nakashima 6-7 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (5). Shelton will face 13th-seeded Flavio Cobolli of Italy. In the afternoon, sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia beat Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. 'In the second and third sets, I was able to play more aggressive, fewer mistakes,' Rublev said. 'Let's see what's happening next, I'm super excited and motivated.' Seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States edged Aleksandar Vukic of Australia 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to set up a match with Washington winner Alex de Minaur of Australia. Parsons, Cowboys relationship is easily fixable with a little bit of cash money
It's the same stuff, different day in Dallas Cowboys Land right now. Every summer the Cowboys find themselves embattled in the same situation: a star player wants a new deal, and the front office is none-too-eager to meet his demands. And this year is no different. This season's edition of 'pay that man' features Micah Parsons. Parsons, the Cowboys All-Pro pass rusher and arguably the best player on the team, is entering the fifth-year option following his rookie deal. It's a time when most former first rounders who are going to be extended, have been. It's supposed to be a preemptive attack on free agency and a way for players to secure the bag, while teams lock down their future. It's safe to say things have gone poorly in negotiations. So poorly, Parsons has seemingly taken a page from Myles Garrett's playbook and now demanded a trade. The business portion of football can get ugly and ugly is exactly where the Cowboys and Parsons are at the moment. To fans who have been watching the situation unravel on social media, it's Code Orange in Dallas right now (hospital code for a disaster). Parsons might be the most dominant defensive player the Cowboys have ever rostered. Losing him is a nightmare no one wants to imagine. But in the words of the great Cowboys-killer Aaron Rodgers, 'relaaaaaax.' Money has a way of curing all wounds. The Cowboys have been down this road before and every time they've found a way to keep the players they want while repairing the bad blood along the way. All with a simple stroke of the pen. Parsons' trade demand is a demand for progress, if anything. His 'hold in' wasn't getting the results he wanted so he upped the pressure. Quite possibly the only player more media savvy than the Joneses, Parsons has placed himself in the driver's seat, even if the Cowboys hold the leverage. He's got fan support, teammates support, league support and all the media attention he could ask for. Parsons knows he's under contract for 2025. He also knows the Cowboys could franchise tag him for a year or two thereafter. He wants what Garrett and T.J. Watt both fought to get: a top of the market contract extension. Given his age, durability and efficiency, he's more than entitled to it as well. Resetting the market isn't an absurd demand and there's a good chance the Cowboys front office is already prepared to do it. There's a stalemate in negotiations, but the chasm probably isn't as wide as some might think. At the end of the day the Cowboys always find a way to get their man. If they want Parsons, they'll get him. And if Parsons gets paid, he'll be happy to put it all behind him and hit the ground running. Money heals all wounds in the NFL and the drama unfolding in training camp this year is nothing new for a franchise that lives on drama such as this. So, relax.
