India to soon have 5th-generation indigenous stealth fighter jet AMCA

India Today31-05-2025
The government has approved the "execution model" for implementing a major indigenous project to develop India's fifth-generation, deep-penetration Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) for the Air Force, potentially making India the fourth country to possess such stealth fighter jets.
AMCA is an ambitious next-generation project aimed at developing a fifth-generation stealth, multirole combat aircraft for both the Air Force and the Navy.
The single-seat, twin-engine aircraft is designed for all-weather operations and is expected to have a maximum takeoff weight of around 25 tonnes. It will be capable of flying at altitudes of up to 55,000 feet. The aircraft will feature an internal weapons bay with a 1,500 kg capacity, support an external payload of up to 5,500 kg, and carry 6,500 kg of fuel.
With the first prototype of the country's most advanced indigenous fighter jet expected to be ready in the next four years, senior defence officials informed India Today TV that the AMCA, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is expected to be ready by 2028. We try and understand more as to how AMCA is going to be a game-changer for India on Battle Cry.

US' F-35 Lightning II and Russia's Su-57 Felon fighter: Why India need fifth generation fighter jets, they are special because..., India's AMCA is...

The F-35 Fighter jet-Image for representational purpose In a major push towards Atmanirbharta (self-reliance), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved the Execution Model for the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme recently. As per a report by IANS news agency, the AMCA clearance marks a critical step towards realising India's goal of joining an elite club of nations in designing and producing its own fleet of next-generation combat aircraft. India's answer to fifth-generation air power The AMCA, widely seen as India's answer to fifth-generation air power, will give a major boost to achieving 'atmanirbharata' in the defence sector and will become a hallmark of India's growing defence capabilities. Why India's AMCA will be special? Being the fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter equipped with cutting-edge technology, it will be suited for all-weather operation. Designed with low radar cross-section and supercruise capability, the AMCA is seen as the successor to the frontline Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets. (With inputs from agencies)

The move aligns with India's broader strategy of regional engagement in the Indo-Pacific, especially as China asserts influence across strategic waters. The guided-missile destroyer INS Delhi, the anti-submarine warfare corvette INS Kiltan, and the fleet tanker INS Shakti have docked in Manila. Rear Admiral Susheel Menon, commander of the Eastern Fleet and leader of the task group, told TOI that the Indian and Philippine navies share a common objective of maintaining regional security.'India and the Philippines share a mutual interest in maintaining regional stability and enhancing maritime security,' he said. He added that such visits were important for building understanding and trust between like-minded maritime forces. A bilateral naval exercise between India and the Philippines is expected to include joint manoeuvres and communication protocols. The drills aim to improve preparedness, build mutual trust, and enhance operational synergy in the maritime domain. Meanwhile, stealth frigate INS Satpura is participating in the 32nd edition of the bilateral naval exercise Simbex with the Republic of Singapore Navy. An officer quoted by TOI said the exercise involves advanced naval operations such as air defence drills, cross-deck helicopter flights, aerial and surface targeting, coordinated manoeuvres, and VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure) Satpura's participation marks yet another chapter in the strong and long-standing maritime partnership between India and Navy's deployment follows a $375 million agreement signed in January 2022 to supply the Philippines with three BrahMos supersonic cruise missile coastal batteries. India is also holding talks with other ASEAN countries, including Indonesia and Vietnam, for potential defence exports. Besides the jointly developed BrahMos missile, India is offering the indigenous Akash air defence missile system. The Akash system can intercept a variety of aerial threats, including hostile aircraft, helicopters, drones, and subsonic cruise missiles, within a 25-kilometre range. India's latest naval deployments signal a growing effort to build trust and interoperability with key partners in Southeast Asia. As strategic competition intensifies in the Indo-Pacific, India is strengthening its maritime presence and defence cooperation across the region. (With inputs from TOI)
