Global experts call for cultural understanding, exchange in China's Harbin
HARBIN (July 24): While speaking of his bond with Chinese culture, 69-year-old British translator David Ferguson hummed a passage from the Peking Opera classic Dingjun Mountain, recalling how Chinese art has profoundly transformed his life.
Ferguson, the honorary chief English editor of China's Foreign Languages Press, has lived and worked in China for nearly two decades.
Over the years, his engagement with Chinese culture has deepened both professionally and personally – his son, who came to China with him as a toddler, has studied Peking Opera for many years and can now perform a range of opera pieces.
He said he is proud of what his son has achieved, noting that his son's experiences have strengthened his belief that cultural exchange is his life's mission.
Ferguson was a recipient of the inaugural Orchid Awards in 2023. The awards were established to honor international friends who have contributed to fostering cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.
From July 11 to 14, Ferguson joined dozens of global scholars, cultural experts and awardees of this year's Orchid Awards on a visit to Harbin, the capital city of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province famous for its unique music and cultural offerings.
To Ferguson, meaningful dialogue between civilisations often takes place not on grand stages, but during ordinary encounters – much like his bond with Peking Opera.
'We tend to associate cultural exchange first with fine arts, but ordinary people are in fact the protagonists of most cultural interactions,' he said.
He recalled a visit years ago to rural areas in northwest China's Gansu Province to learn about local poverty alleviation efforts.

In a village inhabited by the Dongxiang ethnic group, children welcomed him in a modest classroom by performing 'Auld Lang Syne' – a memory that remains vivid to this day.
'As a Scotsman, hearing the melody of my homeland in a Chinese village thousands of miles away brought tears to my eyes. It was the most precious gift I've received in China,' he said, noting that such moments of cultural exchange are more important than ever in a world troubled by conflicts and tensions.
For German medical scientist Thomas Rabe, who also participated in the Harbin tour, cultural exchange has been consolidating his family's long-standing friendship with China and will continue to contribute to international peace and friendship.
Rabe is the chairman of the John Rabe Communication Center, which is dedicated to commemorating his grandfather John Rabe for his role in protecting civilians during the Nanjing Massacre in 1937, an atrocity committed during Japan's war of aggression against China.
Over the years, Thomas Rabe has dedicated himself to compiling over 20 volumes of wartime diaries written by his grandfather.
He has donated thousands of pages of the original manuscripts to Chinese authorities and Unesco.
These diaries have become invaluable historical resources for research on the Nanjing Massacre.
Rabe also shared with Xinhua how a China-German medical cooperation project he helped launch at Capital Medical University in Beijing enabled a Chinese cancer patient to give birth to two healthy children.
For his contributions to cultural and scientific exchanges, Rabe was awarded the Friendship Envoy Award at the second Orchid Awards earlier this month.
'For my family, China has been, is, and will always remain our second homeland,' he said.
Guo Weimin, president of the China Public Relations Association and deputy chair of this year's Orchid Awards expert committee, emphasised that cultural exchange is a vital force for connecting civilisations and advancing the development of human society.
'Visionary individuals from around the world, including the Orchid Awards honorees and nominees, have made outstanding contributions to international cultural dialogue and mutual learning among civilisations,' Guo said.
'Their efforts inspire confidence in our shared pursuit of peace and common development.' – Xinhua China cultural understanding global experts Harbin Xinhua

Fan Bingbing Reportedly Returning To Melaka In August To Receive Datuk Wira Title
While Fan Bingbing's (范冰冰) appointment as Tourism Ambassador for Melaka received mixed reactions, it has brought improvement to the state's tourism. However, rumour has it that the Chinese actress may receive a state honour for her contribution. Last year, the actress was appointed Tourism Ambassador for Melaka, a move that received mixed reactions. Despite the comments, Fan Bingbing's ambassadorship saw a growth in the number of Chinese tourists visiting the historical state. The star was even recognised in the Malaysian Book of Records for 'Largest Digital Hits for Malaysian Tourism on WeChat Platform Using Celebrity Ambassador'. In celebration of her contribution, the state of Melaka is reportedly honouring the star with the highest state honour. According to China Press, Fan Bingbing may be honoured with a Datuk Wira title during the Governor of Melaka's birthday on 24th August 2025 (Sunday). As such, the actress will be returning to the state to receive the honour and fulfil her duties as Tourism Ambassador. Fan Bingbing is currently in Kuala Lumpur to film for an upcoming project. Fan Bingbing's tenure as Melaka's Tourism Ambassador may also be extended, given her contributions to the state so far. Since the state will be hosting the World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 and the World Tourism Conference (WTC) 2025 from 27th to 29th September 2025 (Saturday to Monday), it's believed the actress will continue her role in light of these events. According to reports, in the year Fan Bingbing was appointed Tourism Ambassador for Melaka, the number of Chinese tourists in the state increased significantly from 204,818 to 664,687. The increase in tourism also helped boost consumption in hotels, restaurants and attractions, making the 44-year-old a significant contributor to helping Melaka's tourism industry recover. The rumours of Fan Bingbing receiving the Datuk Wira honour remain unconfirmed, but what are your thoughts on this? Source: China Press

Sterling performance by Kian Kok students
Published on: Monday, July 28, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jul 28, 2025 Text Size: The performers and guests. Kota Kinabalu: A one-hour blackout and brief mid-performance disruption did not dampen the spirits of performers at Kian Kok Middle School's annual Cultural Night, Saturday. The event themed 'Joy at Kian Kok' featured musical, dance and multicultural acts. Attendees, including parents and special guests, witnessed the resilience of students and staff as they adapted to the unexpected technical challenge. In his opening speech, Board Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh praised the students' initiative, emphasising that the event was more than just entertainment, it was a platform for growth. 'At Kian Kok, education goes beyond grades. It is about nurturing passion, character and creativity. Tonight, our students did not just perform, they proved their ability to adapt and excel under pressure,' he said. Clement pointed out the school's commitment to well-rounded development as reflected by recent achievements, including its brass band winning gold at a national competition and its Chinese orchestra preparing for a 2026 cultural exchange in Taiwan. Guest of Honour David Lam, who is Honorary Advisor to the Board, lauded the performances as a profound life lesson in passion and perseverance. 'Kian Kok is not just producing top scorers but about cultivating dreamers. On this stage, students found their voices and the courage to chase their futures,' he said. The power outage became an unplanned highlight, with students and staff working to keep spirits high. Their composure left an impression on parents and guests, who described the night as a journey of hope and resilience. As the curtain fell, the thunderous applause echoed the school's mission to empower every child to shine in their own unique light. 'Education is not just about exams. It is about being seen, heard and believed in. Tonight, we did not just witness talent, we saw the power of unwavering belief in every student's potential,' said David. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
