AMD Stock Drops 44%, Is a Big Comeback Coming?

Globe and Mail21-03-2025
Shares of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have witnessed a notable decline, trading approximately 44% lower than their 52-week high of $187.28. This downturn largely reflects AMD's challenges in capturing a significant share of the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) market, where Nvidia (NVDA) holds a dominant position.
In addition to AI, macroeconomic and competitive headwinds in the CPU market added further pressure. The company's full-year (2025) revenue forecast has also disappointed investors, exacerbating concerns and weighing on its stock performance.
Despite these setbacks, AMD has bright spots. The company anticipates robust growth in its data center AI segment, which could serve as a key driver for recovery. Looking ahead to 2025, AMD's leadership is optimistic about improving demand across all business segments, particularly in data centers and client services, with moderate gains expected in gaming and embedded solutions.
Against this backdrop, let's explore AMD's prospects and opportunities that could spark a rebound in its stock price.
AMD's Data Center Boom: A Catalyst for Stock Growth
AMD's data center business is growing rapidly, delivering record revenue. Moreover, the company is focused on offering a wide range of high-performance adaptive hardware and software solutions in the AI space to capture demand and accelerate its growth. Further, it is expanding its partnerships to accelerate the deployments of AMD-based AI solutions at a significant scale.
Demand for AMD's AI accelerators, particularly the AMD Instinct MI300X GPUs, is surging as large hyperscalers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and original design manufacturers (ODMs) integrate them into their operations. AMD has unveiled an accelerated roadmap for its AI accelerators to maintain its competitive edge, committing to an annual release cycle of cutting-edge solutions. Furthermore, the launch of its 5th Gen AMD EPYC server processors is set to redefine performance benchmarks in data center workloads.
The company's financial performance reflects its strong position in the market. AMD reported $12.6 billion in data center revenue for 2024, marking a staggering 94% increase from the previous year's $6.5 billion. This surge was driven by the robust adoption of AMD Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs, solidifying its foothold in the AI and cloud computing sectors.
Further, to enhance its AI capabilities, AMD completed the acquisition of Silo AI, a leading AI lab in Finland. This acquisition strengthens AMD's ability to develop and deploy advanced AI models on its hardware.
On the product front, AMD has ramped up volume production of the MI325X GPUs, which have been well-received. The company has secured several high-profile deals with customers deploying AMD Instinct solutions at scale for both inferencing and training AI models.
Looking ahead, AMD's next-generation MI350 series is set to deliver significant improvement in AI compute performance over its predecessor. This could lead to solid demand, and the company plans to ramp up production by mid-year. Furthermore, the development of the MI400 series is well underway, promising even more significant advancements in AI and networking integration.
Besides hardware, AMD is also investing heavily in software capabilities and expanding its open ecosystem. It continues to enhance its ROCm software stack, optimizing AI workloads and simplifying the developer experience. As the company strengthens its leadership in AI and data center solutions, it is poised to deliver significant growth, which will drive its share price higher.
AMD's Competitive Edge in CPUs
While AMD's AI and data center business drives significant growth, its CPU segment will likely complement its growth. The company's EPYC processors continue to gain momentum in the server market, helping AMD expand its market share. As businesses seek high-performance computing solutions, AMD's combination of strong performance and cost efficiency gives it a distinct edge.
The PC market is also showing signs of recovery, with AMD projecting mid-single-digit growth in 2025. Additionally, as AI-powered PCs become more prevalent, AMD's leadership in AI-enabled CPUs further solidifies its competitive position.
Is AMD Stock Set for a Comeback?
Wall Street analysts have a 'Moderate Buy' consensus rating on AMD stock, suggesting that the stock is well-positioned for a rebound.
Overall, AMD is an attractive investment for investors seeking exposure to a stock with a reasonable valuation and strong growth potential led by AI-driven demand.

Record-breaking day on Wall Street for Nasdaq, S&P 500

NEW YORK, New York -U.S. stock markets closed with broad gains on Thursday, led by strong performances in U.S. tech stocks, while European and Asian indices showed mixed movements. The Nasdaq Composite and Standard and Poor's 500 hit new record highs following release of a favorable jobs report. Nvidia closed with a market capitalization of $3.89 trillion, soon to eclipse Apple as the world's most valuable company. "We are seeing a real bout of irrational exuberance; the stock market is very biased towards optimism," Kristina Hooper, Chief Market Strategist at Man Group in New York told CNBC Thursday. "But there's some basis for it. I think there is some level of relief because the jobs report was not as weak as it could have been." Better AI Stock for 2H25: NVIDIA or Palantir?

Shares of Palantir Technologies Inc. PLTR, which sells a well-liked artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software platform, have surged 74.7% so far this year, outperforming the leading AI chip maker, NVIDIA Corporation 's NVDA 17.1% gain. Can Palantir keep outperforming NVIDIA in the second half, and is it the better AI stock for your portfolio? Reasons to Be Bullish on NVIDIA Stock The surge in demand for NVIDIA's state-of-the-art new-generation Blackwell chips helped the company's sales grow 69% year over year to $44.1 billion in the fiscal first quarter, which ended on April 27. NVIDIA overcame supply-chain bottlenecks and delivered Blackwell AI servers to customers such as Microsoft Corporation MSFT. Strong demand for AI chips will boost NVIDIA's sales, supported by increased developer adoption of the CUDA platform. The AI revolution in self-driving cars and autonomous robots also benefits NVIDIA. As major cloud computing companies like Inc. AMZN and Alphabet Inc. GOOGL purchase NVIDIA's graphics processing units (GPUs), in which the company holds a large share, the company is likely to see further growth. President Trump's tariffs and export restrictions on AI chips to China may impact NVIDIA's sales, but the company is adjusting its hardware specifications to resume sales there. Even without China, NVIDIA is positioned to benefit from the worldwide demand for AI capabilities. Reasons to Be Bullish on Palantir Stock A rise in both commercial and government contracts helped Palantir increase its revenues in the first quarter. Commercial revenues increased 71% year over year (YoY) to $255 million, while government revenues rose 45% YoY to $373 million. Palantir's sales growth has contributed to strong financial results, with net income reaching $217.7 million in the first quarter, more than doubling last year's $106.1 million. Palantir's adjusted free cash flow for the quarter was $370 million, up 42% YoY. Additionally, the remaining performance obligations of $1.9 billion and an estimated total addressable market of over $1 trillion in the next decade indicate Palantir's continued strength. Palantir's Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), capable of automating tasks beyond human reach, drove its revenue growth. The company's new AI products, like Warp Speed, which uses AI to improve U.S. manufacturing efficiency, are also expected to boost revenues. Meanwhile, Palantir shareholders are excited about President Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill'. This is because Palantir is a key player in developing the Golden Dome missile defense system, included in the bill. Moreover, the ongoing geopolitical tensions and the AI arms race could further benefit Palantir. Which Is the Better AI Stock for 2H25: NVIDIA or Palantir? Palantir's AIP and other AI products are expected to see heightened commercial success in the near term, while strong demand for new Blackwell GPUs will boost NVIDIA's profit margins. However, the only issue with investing in Palantir is its lofty valuations. Per the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, Palantir trades at 226.62 times forward earnings, while NVIDIA's forward earnings multiple is 37.07. So, an economic downturn may quickly lower Palantir's share price, unlike NVIDIA's. Therefore, it's safe to conclude that NVIDIA is a better stock than Palantir in the second half. Palantir stock only suits aggressive investors. But those seeking stable returns should consider NVIDIA. At the moment, both stocks possess a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Nvidia Corp: Rising Bullish Sentiment Could Signal a Pullback

Nvidia Corp (NVDA) (About (STA Research): Is a Canadian investment research company, consisting of Financial Professionals specializing in advanced stock research and analysis). Nvidia's stock has been on a steady rise since the stock bottomed in April, fueled by investor enthusiasm around artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, and the company's commanding lead in GPU technology. Today the stock has just reached a new record high, crossing over the $160 mark, as retail and institutional investors continue to open and add new positons. However, history and technical analysis suggest that such euphoric sentiment could be a contrarian red flag. Euphoria Can Mark the End of a Rally In financial markets, extreme bullishness often coincides with market tops. When nearly everyone is optimistic, it usually means the good news is already priced in. Nvidia's valuation has surged to levels that leave little margin for error. At these elevated prices, even a minor disappointment — in earnings, guidance, or macroeconomic signals — could trigger a sharp correction. Investor positioning reflects this. Options data and retail inflows show a crowded long trade, which historically tends to precede profit-taking, especially when fundamentals don't accelerate fast enough to keep pace with inflated expectations. Technical Indicators Point to Market Hesitation Beyond sentiment, technical analysis is flashing warning signs. The market currently shows uncertainty with a negative bias — a state in which buyers and sellers are indecisive, but bearish momentum is subtly gaining strength. This is evident in Nvidia's recent price action, marked by tightening trading ranges, waning volume on up days, and sharp reactions to intraday resistance levels. Most notably, a three-candlestick top reversal pattern has emerged on the daily chart — a classic bearish signal. This pattern typically forms at the end of an uptrend and often precedes a reversal in price. The setup consists of a strong upward candle, followed by a small-bodied candle indicating indecision (a doji or spinning top), and capped off with a bearish engulfing or downward candle that closes below the previous two. This signals fading bullish momentum and the emergence of stronger selling pressure. Lack of Consensus, But Bearish Tone Rising Adding to the case for caution is the evident lack of consensus among traders. While long-term bulls remain optimistic on Nvidia's fundamentals, short-term traders are showing signs of retreat. Recent selling into strength, hesitant follow-through on breakouts, and increased short interest hint at growing doubts about the sustainability of the rally. Moreover, breadth in the semiconductor sector is narrowing, with fewer names participating in the upside. This divergence can be a leading indicator that a sector-wide pullback is looming. Peak Optimism Could Spell Reversal Nvidia's leadership in AI and chips is not in question, but the stock's parabolic run may have outpaced even its impressive fundamentals. When sentiment becomes overly bullish, the market often sets itself up for a reversal. Combined with bearish technical patterns and a shifting tone among traders, Nvidia's chart suggests caution may be warranted. Investors holding long positions should consider tightening stop-loss levels or locking in gains. Meanwhile, traders may see this as an opportunity to play a short-term pullback if bearish confirmation unfolds. In the markets, extreme optimism often sows the seeds of the next decline, of which Nvidia may possibly be at that inflection point.
