Off the Grid: Sally breaks down USA TODAY's daily crossword puzzle, See In
Constructor: Kapil Mehta
Editor: Anna Gundlach
Kapil: Here is what I liked about "See In." The word "See" for starters is so evocative. For me, it conjures up the idea of looking deeply and relating to things around me. Then I enjoyed building in two theme answers that span the entire grid with 15 letters. Such long answers make constructing the puzzle a bit more difficult but the visual and literal impact is high. And finally, the last clue [60D: Fitting place for this clue's answer] is just right. The credit for that clue goes to the editors though!
MEN (9D: "X-___ '97" (superhero cartoon)) X-MEN '97 is an animated Disney+ TV series that debuted last year. The show is a revival of X-MEN: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992-1997. Although I'm not familiar with this specific show, the answer here was inferable, as I am familiar with the X-MEN characters, humans born with the X-gene, a mutation that confers superhuman abilities.
TBS (46D: "Dinner and a Movie" network) The TBS TV series Dinner and a Movie originally aired from 1995-2011, and was revived last year. Each episode includes – as the name suggests – a movie and a themed dinner to go along with it. The revised series is hosted by Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen.
MRS (1A: "___ Robinson" (Simon & Garfunkel hit)) "MRS. Robinson" is a 1968 song by Simon & Garfunkel. Fragments of the song were used in the 1967 movie The Graduate (before the song's release as a single). "MRS. Robinson" won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. "And here's to you, MRS. Robinson..."
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (17A: "___ of the Third Kind" (sci-fi movie)) CLOSE ENCOUNTERS of the Third Kind is a 1977 sci-fi movie written and directed by Steven Spielberg. As the movie's title suggests, it is about people who have CLOSE ENCOUNTERS with UFOs. Interesting fact: Apparently Steven Spielberg received a 20-page letter from NASA (which turned down the opportunity to be involved in the film) asking him not to release the movie.
LIRA (23A: Turkish currency) Turkey is a country mostly located in West Asia (a part of the country extends into Southeast Europe). The capital of Turkey is Ankara, and its currency is the Turkish LIRA.
OPERA (33A: "Tosca" or "Porgy and Bess") Giacomo Puccini's OPERA, Tosca, premiered in Rome in 1900. The title character, Tosca, is the only female character in the OPERA. Porgy and Bess is an OPERA composed by George Gershwin, with libretto by Dubose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. It was first performed in Boston in September 1935 and premiered on Broadway a couple of weeks later.
MISE-EN-SCENE (35A: Staging and design) MISE-EN-SCÈNE is a French phrase that means "placing on stage." The term is used in theater and film production to refer to staging and design. I've heard this term before, but definitely needed the help of crossing answers to remind me of it.
SARONGS (43A: Southeast Asian body wraps) SARONGS are loose garments that consist of long strips of fabric wrapped around the body. They are often wrapped around the waist and are worn by women and men.
HMONG (53A: Indigenous Southeast Asian people) The HMONG people are an ethnic group in China, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. As I have previously written, many HMONG immigrated to the United States following the Vietnam War.
RALEIGH (2D: North Carolina's capital) I believe I was in the fifth grade when I learned all of the U.S. state capitals. That was a year or two ago (and getting longer every year!), so when presented with a clue such as this I sometimes need to dust off some little-used parts of my brain. All this is to say that I'm thankful for the opportunity to review that RALEIGH is the capital of North Carolina. It's the second-most populous city in North Carolina, after Charlotte.
WESLEY (12D: "Blade" actor Snipes) The 1998 movie Blade is the first movie in the Blade franchise, which currently includes three movies and a TV series. WESLEY Snipes portrays the title character in the movies, a daywalker (half-vampire) who hunts vampires.
SEA (18D: Sargasso or Caspian) The Sargasso SEA is an area of the Atlantic Ocean characterized by the growth of Sargassum seaweed and blue water that is often calm. Unlike other SEAs, the Sargasso SEA has no land boundaries. The Caspian SEA is the world's largest inland body of water. It is located between Europe and Asia, and is bordered by Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkmenistan.
CAT (19D: Pet that might chirp at squirrels) My CAT, Willow, likes to sit at the window and watch the squirrels and birds in our yard. She doesn't usually chirp at them; she generally reserves that for stray cats that wander into her territory.
EL DORADO (38D: Legendary city of gold) The legendary city of gold known as EL DORADO is said to be located somewhere in the Americas. Stories of this mythical city surfaced in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, but although many have searched for it, none have found it.
BIG BEN (47D: Great Clock of Westminster) BIG BEN is located at the north end of the Palace of Westminster (also called the Houses of Parliament) in London, England. BIG BEN is the nickname of the clock's bell, and is also used to refer to the clock tower itself.
ADA (57D: programming pioneer Lovelace) It's been just over a week since we saw ADA Lovelace mentioned in a puzzle, so it's time. I'm always happy to see a mention of ADA Lovelace (1815-1852). A mathematician and computer programmer, she is considered to be one of the first to recognize the full potential of computers.
END (60D: Fitting place for this clue's answer) It's a little thing, but it always makes me smile to see END in the lower corner of the puzzle.
CLOSE ENCOUNTERS (17A: "___ of the Third Kind" (sci-fi movie))
MISE-EN-SCENE (35A: Staging and design)
PLEASE ELABORATE (56A: "Could you clarify?")
SEE IN: IN each theme answer, the word SEE is found: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, MISE-EN-SCENE, and PLEASE ELABORATE.
The title of today's puzzle allowed me to make a confident guess about the theme. Always enjoyable to have a guess prove correct. In Kapil's note, he mentioned appreciating that two of the theme answers are grid-spanning. I agree that, although it doesn't affect the effectiveness of the theme at all, grid-spanning theme answers are especially satisfying. Thank you, Kapil, for this excellent puzzle.

What to stream: Get to know films of Ari Aster and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
Two exciting young genre filmmakers have films out in theaters this weekend: Ari Aster, with the contemporary Western 'Eddington,' which he wrote and directed, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, with 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' a remake of the 1997 teen horror classic, which she directed and co-wrote with Sam Lansky and Leah McKendrick. Aster has carved out a name for himself as an auteur of artfully directed horror films that deal with family trauma in surprising and disturbing ways, while Robinson has put her stamp on smart and sassy pop projects with large ensemble casts. Check out their filmographies on streaming before you head to the theater this weekend, to see what their work is all about. Aster first made his mark with his debut feature 'Hereditary,' a terrifying horror film about a trauma that befalls a family, and the strange, even supernatural events that come out of it. Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne star as parents Annie and Steve, with Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro as their children. If you still haven't seen 'Hereditary,' the less you know, the better. Rent it on iTunes or Amazon. He followed that up with the folk horror breakup movie 'Midsommar,' starring Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor as a couple whose relationship is on the rocks when they travel to Sweden with a friend, and discover that the midsommar festivities they're attending take place within a strange cult. It's a must-see in the Aster oeuvre. Rent it on iTunes or Amazon. Aster's daring third feature 'Beau Is Afraid' strayed from the traditional horror genre, incorporating different storytelling elements into this sprawling and absurdist family dramedy, about one very anxious man, Beau (Joaquin Phoenix), embarking on a harrowing journey to get home to see his mother (Patti LuPone). You simply have to see it for yourself. Stream 'Beau Is Afraid' on HBO Max, Paramount+, or rent it on other platforms. Robinson created the MTV revenge series 'Sweet/Vicious' about a pair of college student vigilantes who target sexual assailants, and wrote and directed the ensemble Netflix breakup rom-com 'Someone Great,' starring Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, DeWanda Wise and LaKeith Stanfield. Stream 'Someone Great' on Netflix. After writing the abortion road trip buddy comedy 'Unpregnant' (streaming on HBO Max), and co-writing 'Thor: Love and Thunder' (streaming on Disney+), Robinson continued to work with Netflix for her second feature. The snappy high school-set 'Do Revenge' is loosely based on the Patricia Highsmith novel 'Strangers on a Train,' and the Hitchcock film of the same name, but is also made in the mold of classics like 'Heathers' and 'Clueless.' 'Do Revenge' stars Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke and is streaming on Netflix. --- Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Portions copyrighted by the respective providers.

All the new rules and everything else you need to know ahead of upcoming Oasis gigs
Oasis fans have been issued with new rules and travel advice ahead of the next three performances at Heaton Park later this week. The band will play three more dates in the city as part of their ongoing world tour; tomorrow (July 16), and again on Saturday and Sunday (July 19 & 20). Music fans heading to the next shows this week have been issued a warning from transport bosses with the network expected to be very 'busy' across the weekend, with ticketholders urged to use public transport services due to road closures around the park. READ MORE: Oasis fans fuming as 'Gallagher Hill' fenced off ahead of next show READ MORE: Oasis fans heading to Heaton Park given new advice as travel warning issued Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here This past weekend, more than 140,000 people watched as Liam and Noel Gallagher reunited on stage for the first time in 16 years in Manchester. The gig featured many memorable moments, from frontman Liam being booed over his Manchester City shout-out, to Noel's sweet tribute to Caroline Aherne. Oasis fans fuming as 'Gallagher Hill' fenced off ahead of next show Oasis weather forecast for Manchester Heaton Park gigs with 'thundery showers' to come Playing on both Friday and Saturday night (July 11 & 12), more than 80,000 journeys were made on trams and shuttle buses that were put on especially for the major concerts. Join our Oasis WhatsApp group HERE New travel advice has now been issued to fans heading to the remaining three shows in Manchester, with fresh guidance also shared by the council who are urging fans not to attend Heaton Park unless they have a valid ticket. There will be a regular six-minute service from Victoria Station to Bury put on during the shows. Victoria Station is the only city centre station with a direct tram to Heaton Park. To avoid the busiest periods, fans are being asked to travel earlier than 3.30pm where possible, with queuing expected at Victoria due to the high demand of services. Heaton Park tram stop will also be closed at 9pm, with fans asked to instead use Bowker Vale to travel to the city centre and to Bury after the events. Alternatively, shuttle buses will be running from Lever Street in the Northern Quarter straight to Heaton Park. As with the tram service, the advice is to travel earlier than 3.30pm if possible, Transport for Greater Manchester said. Queuing is expected on Lever Street due to the high demand of services and tickets can be bought in advance for £10 from the Bee Network app. There will be a limited number of shuttle tickets available in person at the shuttle bus queue on Lever Street via contactless payment. The buses are leaving from Lever Street, which is an 11-minute walk from Piccadilly train station and a five-minute walk from Piccadilly Gardens - from 1.30pm on each event day. The sale of shuttle tickets will end on Tuesday 15 July at 11.59pm for the Wednesday 16 July concert. During the last Oasis shows, a number of fans opted to walk to Heaton Park, including from the city centre. Queues of fans waiting for buses and trams prompted many of them to walk. From Victoria station, it would take around one hour and 17 minutes to make the journey on foot, which is around 3.3 miles, along Bury New Road. For those who have to drive or need to be dropped off and picked up are encouraged to consider taking advantage of the 24 park and ride sites in Greater Manchester. This is also because there will be a number of road closures in place during the shows, which will be surrounding the event site to maintain pedestrian safety and to ensure there is no vehicle movement on main walking routes. Road Closures (21:30pm – 01:00am): Middleton Road: Closed from junction of Victoria Avenue to Bury Old Road (both directions) Sheepfoot Lane: Closed from junction of Bury Old Road to Middleton Road (both directions) Blackley New Road: Closed from junction of Middleton Road to Riverdale Road (both directions) Meade Hill Road: Closed from junction of Sheepfoot Lane to Middleton Road (both directions) Bury Old Road: Closed from junction of Heywood Road to junction of Middleton Road (both directions) Scholes Lane: Closed from junction of Bury Old Road and Heywood Road Whiteaker Lane: One way — open to westbound traffic only from the junction of Bury Old Road to the junction of Heywood Road. All traffic must follow the direction of the one-way system. Fans without tickets are being urged not to head to Heaton Park to try and listen in to the Oasis gigs amid warnings over public safety, according to the council. It comes after the popular "Gallagher Hill" where fans had been assembling to watch the gig for free was fenced off on Tuesday. With three concerts still to be played by Oasis in Manchester's Heaton Park homecoming, council bosses are repeating their request for fans without tickets not to travel to the park and have issued new guidance. This included the news that bigger security fencing had been implemented to completely block the view of the stage area, following a number of fans attempting to break into the grounds last weekend. There will be around 2,000 event and security staff, along with police officers, on duty around the site. They have now explained in a statement why "additional measures have now been deemed necessary" around the perimeter of the vast parkland amid a new warning over public safety. The statement today said: "After taking stock of how the first two nights went, additional measures have now been deemed necessary and will be in place for the next three Oasis concerts, to protect the environment of the park, ensure areas of parkland and nearby livestock are protected, and maintain public safety. "These include the erection of steel fencing around a large area of the hill within the cattle field in the main park - which is currently being developed as a new woodland area for the park and has been recently planted with around 300 young whips including Hornbeam, Field Maple, Aspen, Downy birch, Rowan, Common Alder, Crab apple and more - as well as measures to protect the livestock in the field, which include expectant and nursing cows and a bull. "The erection of the fencing has a dual purpose - both to protect the environment from further damage and to dissuade people from gathering there. The necessary measure means the concert will no longer be visible from this area."

Man wins $1M prize during game show celebrating release of 'Jaws'
A northeastern Massachusetts man is taking home $1 million after a game show hosted at Martha's Vineyard in honor of the theatrical release of the 1975 thriller 'Jaws'. The live game show was held on July 13 at Martha's Vineyard, where the Steven Spielberg movie was filmed over a 5 ½ month period in 1974. This year, Martha's Vineyard is hosting a series of events in honor of the film's theatrical release on June 20, 1975. David Ouellette was part of the game show, dubbed the Massachusetts State Lottery's '$1,000,000 Jaws Game Show,' and took home the game's $1 million top prize before taxes, the Massachusetts State Lottery said in a news release. Video captured the moment he won. Here's how he ended up taking home the top prize, and what Martha's Vineyard has in store for the rest of its 'Jaws' 50th anniversary celebration. Read more: Will we need a bigger boat? Martha's Vineyard awash in 'Jaws' at 50 mania Ouellette, who was at the vineyard with his wife, Lynn, was one of 30 contestants selected to participate. The tickets went on sale in March of 2024. To be eligible to compete, contestants submitted non-winning Jaws instant tickets through the Mass Lottery mobile app and website. Six winners were chosen from five Second Chance drawings, earning a paid weekend trip to Martha's Vineyard with one guest, and participation in the '$1,000,000 JAWS Game Show' at the Martha's Vineyard Film Center. During the game show's first round, Ouellette and the other contestants selected a tile to turn around and reveal their prize, including cash amounts ranging from $500 to $5,000. Two of the contestants selected tiles, revealing they were moving forward to the second round, while one contestant would win the top prize of $1 million and the other would receive a $10,000 prize. In the second round, Ouellette and another contestant took turns selecting tiles until Ouellette made his final decision. The first to choose five '$1,000,000' tiles to win it all. 'Number five!' Ouellette yelled in a video captured that day, waiting to see if the tile he chose would bring him victory. As he and onlookers waited in anticipation inside the theater, suspenseful music blared throughout. 'Thank you all,' he said. 'The lottery is great!' Another contestant, Joe Candido of Quincy, about 9 miles southeast of Boston, won the $10,000 prize. The rest of the contestants took home prizes including $500, $1,000, $2,000, and $5,000. When Ouellette and his wife were asked what they planned to do with the money, the couple wasn't quite sure yet. 'It hasn't hit us yet,' the couple said. In addition to the lottery's live game show, Martha's Vineyard guests can also check out 'The Shark is Broken,' a comedic stageplay, as well as an art exhibition, film memorabilia, and 'JAWS'-themed clothing and accessories. More information on the 50th anniversary festivities can be found at
