Kedah records investments totalling RM4.2 billion in 1Q 2025
ALOR SETAR: Kedah recorded RM4.2 billion in investments in the first quarter of this year (1Q 2025), which is expected to generate over 1,400 job opportunities.
Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the manufacturing sector accounted for the largest share with RM3.9 billion in investments -- the third highest among Malaysian states during the same period.
'The high-value manufacturing sector is expected to continue growing strongly despite the current geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
'This growth is being driven by the development of Phase 4A and Phase 5 of the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, the Kulim Industrial Corridor, and new industrial areas such as the Kedah Rubber City and the Kedah Science Technology Park,' he said.
He was speaking at the investiture ceremony in conjunction with the 83rd birthday celebration of the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, at Istana Anak Bukit here today.
According to Muhammad Sanusi, investors' willingness to invest in Kedah was a manifestation of the stability, transparency, and effectiveness of the state government's policies.
Meanwhile, he said the development of the Border Town Corridor has shown positive progress, particularly with the opening of the Inland Clearance Depot (ICD), a logistics hub at the Delapan Special Border Economic Zone in Bukit Kayu Hitam.
He said the hub is capable of attracting additional container traffic estimated at 240,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) from southern Thailand, potentially contributing up to RM843 million annually to Kedah's gross domestic product.
'This border town development is further supported by the construction of a connecting road between the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex and the Sadao Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Thailand, which is expected to be completed by September.
'This strategic infrastructure is projected to boost the Malaysia–Thailand bilateral trade from RM117 billion in 2023 to RM141 billion by 2027, benefiting Kedah through increased cross-border economic activities,' he said.
Additionally, Muhammad Sanusi said that the state recorded 1.5 million tourist arrivals in 1Q 2025 through ongoing promotional efforts in conjunction with the Visit Kedah Year 2025.
'I am confident that the target of seven million tourists can be achieved through the 170 programmes outlined in the Visit Kedah 2025 calendar of events, including 45 major events that will feature elements of sports, gastronomy, technology, and spirituality,' he added.

Malaysian investors explore Cambodian SME sector
PHNOM PENH — A Malaysian private sector-led trade mission is exploring investment opportunities in Cambodia's growing small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, focusing on strategic areas such as agriculture, healthcare and real estate. Led by the Malaysia-Cambodia Business Association (MCBA), the delegation visited Cambodia from June 26 to 29 to identify potential partnerships and promote two-way investment, according to Cambodia's state media, Agence Kampuchea Presse. 'Our goal is to encourage Malaysian investors to invest in Cambodia, and likewise, facilitate Cambodian enterprises in exploring opportunities in Malaysia and forming strategic partnerships,' said MCBA president Datuk Seri Ricky Yaw, as quoted by the state media. Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Hem Vanndy assured the visiting delegation that foreign business entities can enjoy a stable and investor-friendly environment. 'Cambodia is an evolving, yet peaceful and stable country committed to economic development. You must have faith and hope that there is a future and growth for your business here,' he said. Vanndy also encouraged Malaysian investors to consider setting up factories within Cambodia's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) or establishing a dedicated Malaysian SEZ, according to the state media. Prime Minister Hun Manet, who met the delegation on June 26, said it is an opportune time to invest in Cambodia as the government is enhancing the Kingdom's competitiveness at regional and international levels. According to the National Institute of Statistics as of 2022, the Kingdom had 750,000 micro, small and medium enterprises employing nearly three million workers including 1.8 million women. Cambodia-Malaysia bilateral trade reached about RM3.6 billion (US$860 million) last year. — BERNAMA

SINGAPORE: Malaysia and Singapore have unveiled the first Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) train, marking another milestone in the cross-border rail project. The new train was unveiled by Transport Minister Anthony Loke and the island republic's acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) near the Tuas here on Monday (June 30). In a joint statement released by their ministries, they said the RTS Link, which connects Johor Baru and Singapore, will be served by eight trains manufactured by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd at the commencement of service. 'The off-site systems integration testing on the first train will take place at SRTC over the next few months. 'This will be carried out by RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), the joint venture company formed between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd to operate the RTS Link service,' the statement read. The RTS Link trains, which have a white livery with red and blue accents – inspired by the harmonious colour palettes of Malaysia, Johor and Singapore's flags – comprise four cars and have a passenger capacity of 600 passengers. The link's overall peak capacity is up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. Before the unveiling ceremony, the Malaysian and Singaporean media were also given a preview of the train, with a briefing conducted by RTSO rolling stock project manager Mohd Faiz Sudar. As of Monday, the RTS Link is 56% completed in terms of system works, which comprises trackworks, rolling stock (the trains), traction power and the seamless integration of signalling, communications and control systems. According to the media factsheet, track works are expected to be completed by the end of July, while the installation of the traction power supply equipment is currently in progress. Throughout July and August, key activities will include the inspection, testing, and commissioning of the TPS system, including the intertripping and interlocking systems. These works are essential to ensure the readiness of the power supply system to support train testing activities at Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Baru in September, the statement added. When completed, RTS Link will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Baru to Woodlands North in Singapore. It will facilitate the commute between Singapore and Johor Baru, with a train journey time of about five minutes between the two stations. The RTS Link is targeted to commence passenger service by December next year.
