Bengaluru Stampede: Karnataka Revokes Suspension of Top Cop, 3 Others; Internal Probe To Continue
The Karnataka government on Monday revoked the suspension of former Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda and three other officers in connection with the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede, in which 11 people died and at least 70 were left injured.
The Siddaramaiah-led government issued the revocation order following representations by the suspended officers and the submission of two inquiry reports – one by district magistrate G Jagadish as part of the magisterial inquiry, and the other by the one-person judicial commission headed by Justice John Michael Cunha, a retired Karnataka High Court judge.
The inquiries were conducted to investigate the stampede that took place during the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations.
The order stated: 'Since both the judicial commission and the magisterial committee have completed their enquiry into the stampede incident and submitted their reports to the government on 10.07.2025 (July 10) and 11.07.2025 (July 11), respectively, and since the officers have also submitted representations requesting to revoke their suspension, the suspension stands revoked."
Despite the revocation, however, Dayananda – an officer of the rank of additional director general of police (ADGP) – will not be promoted to DGP even as a vacancy arises on July 31, following the retirement of Malini Krishnamurthy. This is due to a pending departmental inquiry against him.
The suspensions of superintendent of police (SP) Shekar H Tekkannavar, deputy SP C Balakrishna, Cubbon Park police inspector AK Girish have also been revoked alongside Dayananda's.
'Despite revoking the suspension, the officers will have to face a departmental inquiry, which may be headed by a former judge or a former IAS officer. Only if the departmental inquiry gives all of them a clean chit can you say they are exonerated," a government source told News18.
Among the suspended senior officers was IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash, who was serving as additional Commissioner of Police (West) at the time of the incident. He had approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), seeking reinstatement soon after his suspensions as announced.
The suspension of Vikash Kumar Vikash, former additional commissioner of police (west), is not considered in this order as it remains pending with the high court. It depends on the decision on the state government's appeal against the order by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), which Kumar had brought in his favour.
On July 10, the CAT passed an order quashing Kumar's suspension and directed the government to reinstate him. He told the tribunal that he was made a scapegoat and had been suspended without being given an opportunity to explain.
The CAT further ruled that his suspension period should be treated as official duty. He was then serving as additional commissioner of police (west) of Bengaluru City.
His suspension, however, has not been revoked as yet because the state government has challenged the CAT's order in the HC. While revoking the other suspensions, it said the departmental inquiries against all the officers will continue.
The stampede on June 4 left 11 people dead and dozens injured after massive crowds gathered at and around the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to celebrate Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) historic IPL win – the team's first trophy in 18 years.
The Justice Cunha commission has held RCB, DNA Entertainment Networks, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) responsible for the incident.

Bdesh: BNPs student wing, NCP hold rallies ahead of July Uprising anniversary
Last Updated: Dhaka, Aug 3 (PTI) Activists of the National Citizen Party and the BNP's student wing held separate rallies in Bangladesh on Sunday ahead of the first anniversary of the July Uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 last year. The newly-floated National Citizen Party (NCP) unveiled the party's 24-point manifesto during its rally in Dhaka's Central Shaheed Minar. The NCP is a major offshoot of Students Against Discrimination (SAD), which led last year's violent campaign to oust Hasina's Awami League regime. The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), called first-time voters to cast their inaugural ballots in favour of the party during its rally in Dhaka's Shahbagh area. Both groups said their rallies marked the first anniversary of the so-called 'July Uprising," which led to the ouster of the government led by 77-year-old Hasina on August 5, 2024, forcing her to flee to India. They, however, agreed to shift the site and time of their respective, near-simultaneous rallies to prevent overlapping or possible clashes. Law enforcement agencies also enforced a strict vigil and deployed additional forces. NCP Convener Nahid Islam unveiled the party's 24-point manifesto, which calls for 'New Bangladesh", the formation of a 'Second Republic" and the adoption of a new Constitution. The manifesto includes pledges to disband the elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), draft a new constitution through a constituent assembly and recognise the July Uprising. 'In the new start of our country, our very first commitment is to frame a new constitution through (a) constituent assembly . . . The fascist government (Awami League regime) has fallen, but yet we could not abolish the fascist system," Islam said. The manifesto vowed to ensure exemplary punishment for every extrajudicial killing and enforced disappearance during the previous regime. The BNP rejected the NCP's demand to declare a 'Second Republic" and scrap the 1972 Constitution of post-independence Bangladesh, as legal experts strongly opposed the idea, warning it could undermine the country's legal foundation. BNP's acting Chairman and Zia's son Tarique Rahman virtually joined the rally from London and called on Bangladesh's students and first-time voters to cast their inaugural ballots in favour of the party's electoral symbol — a sheaf of paddy. 'The people of Bangladesh, 54 years after independence, no longer want politics rooted in vengeance. We must build the Bangladesh that everyone desires," he said, addressing the rally, attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. BJP Demands Urgent Installation of High-Mast Lights at Aija Bus Stand Junction
Gadwal: Led by BJP Aija Town President Kampati Bhagat Reddy, local leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a representation at the main road near the new bus stand, demanding the installation of high-mast street lights at the busy junction. Speaking to the media, Bhagat Reddy criticized the Congress-led government for neglecting public infrastructure and ignoring key civic issues faced by residents, particularly in Jogulamba Gadwal district's Aija Municipality. He highlighted the hardships faced by the public due to the absence of proper lighting at the new bus stand and main junction, which has become increasingly dangerous during night hours. He recalled that in March 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, an existing iMAX light pole collapsed due to poor quality, fortunately causing no injuries. However, since then, no action has been taken to restore lighting at the crucial junction, leaving the area in darkness for over four years. Multiple representations were made in the past: To former Municipal Commissioners on September 28 and October 24, 2024 To the current Commissioner on June 2, 2025 And to the District Collector on March 13, 2025 Following the Collector's intervention, 20 high-mast lights were sanctioned to Aija Municipality in May 2025. However, Bhagat Reddy alleged that these lights were selectively installed in areas favorable to Congress leaders, without any consultation with municipal officials or public representatives, ignoring more critical locations like the new bus stand junction. He demanded immediate action from the Municipality Commissioner, the District Collector, and the State Government, urging them to prioritize the safety and convenience of the general public. 'If the government fails to respond and install the high-mast lights at the junction without delay, the BJP will take to the streets along with the public and organize massive protests,' warned Bhagat Reddy. Present at the event were: District Council Member Pradeep Kumar, Aija Town Vice-President Lakshman Goud, OBC Morcha District Committee Members Lakshmachari, Raghu, Veeresh, Venkatesh, and Shivayya among others.
