Cleo Laine, Grammy-winning jazz singer, dies at 97: Reports

British jazz singer Cleo Laine, who performed with musical greats such as Frank Sinatra and starred as an actor in London's West End and on Broadway, has died at 97, according to reporting from multiple outlets. The Guardian and The New York Times reported the news July 25, citing a statement from Laine's children, musicians Jacqui and Alec Dankworth. "It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved mother, Cleo, who died peacefully yesterday afternoon," the statement to The Guardian read. "We will all miss her terribly. The family wish to be given space to grieve and ask for privacy at this very difficult time." The Stables Theatre, a U.K. music venue that Laine co-founded with her late husband, confirmed the news in a statement posted to its website. Born to an English mother and a Jamaican father in a suburb of London in 1927, Laine initially worked as a hair-dresser, a hat-trimmer and a librarian. She first married in 1946 and had her first son, Stuart. Driven by her dream of becoming a singer, she divorced and got her big break in 1951, when she joined the band of English saxophonist and clarinetist John Dankworth at 24. How Clementine Campbell became Cleo Laine At the time, she had thought she'd been born Clementine Campbell, though a passport application later revealed her mother had used her own surname Hitching on the birth certificate. The men of the Dankworth Seven band thought her name was too cumbersome for a poster, and that her nickname Clem was too cowboy-like. They settled on a new stage persona for her by drawing "Cleo" and "Laine" from hats. In 1958, she and Dankworth married. Their home became a magnet for London's jazz set: Friends included stars from across the Atlantic such as Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald, Lester Young and Dizzy Gillespie. After acting as well as singing in Britain through the 1960s, Laine toured Australia in 1972 and performed at New York's Lincoln Centre. The recording of a further show, at Carnegie Hall, won her a Grammy Award. Her recordings included "Porgy and Bess" with Ray Charles. In 1992, she appeared with Sinatra for a series of shows at the Royal Albert Hall in London, but she was best known for her work with Dankworth's bands. He later became her musical director. The couple built their own auditorium in the grounds of their home near London and were friends with Princess Margaret, the sister of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Their two children went on to become musicians. Dankworth – who Laine described as being "joined at the hip" with her – died in 2010. Hours after his death, Laine performed a scheduled show in their auditorium, announcing the news about her husband only at the end of the concert. Contributing: KiMi Robinson, USA TODAY

You Could Play "I Spy" with J. Lo's Glittery 3D Nails

Getty Images As the parent of a four-year-old, I play a lot of 'I Spy"—in the car, at restaurants, poring over the iconic I Spy book series. You know what would fit right in in the pages of those books? Jennifer Lopez's latest manicure! Lopez's concert nails, designed by her go-to manicurist Tom Bachik, are a visual feast with so many blink-and-you'll-miss-them references, they needed their own Instagram grid post. If you were watching her from the arena floor, you probably wouldn't get to see all the details, which is why we're so thankful Bachik posted a close-up at his work so we could pore over every intricately designed nail. The long, coffin-shaped nails were a mix of burgundy, milky pale pink, and gold tones, embellished with sparkling charms, gemstones, and pearls for a royal vibe. Lopez is currently traveling through Europe on her 'Up All Night' tour, which kicked off in Spain. However, the singer-actor-dancer brought a little bit of home to the stage with one of her nails, which featured the New York Yankees logo in gold and rhinestones; more gemstones danged from the 'Y," ending in a large garnet stone. There were bows, crosses, sacred hearts, and even what appears to be the Chanel interlocking 'C' logo, framed by dangling small pearls. See what I mean about 'I Spy?' I spy, with my little eye… Though Lopez typically wears a much more neutral manicure for her day-to-day life and red carpet events, she likes to go all out with her performance nail art. For a trip to Dubai, she and Bachik whipped up a Swarovski crystal butterfly manicure that we're still thinking about. When she performed at an Elie Saab show in late 2024, her nails were encrusted with even more Swarovski crystals for the definition of superstar sparkle. Lopez has a full touring schedule through mid-August; the 'Up All Night' tour takes her through Italy, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, and more. We've got a feeling Bachik is already busy whipping up many more ornate manicures for us to ogle. Can't wait! Jennifer Lopez's Gucci Nails Clash With Her Outfit in the Most Luxurious Way

Getty Images One of the best things about the burgeoning designer nail trend that Cardi B, SZA, and Megan Thee Stallion have all been participating in is that you don't actually need music-superstar money to take part in it. While your chosen nail artist definitely deserves a big tip for their intricate work, the beauty of these manicures is that you don't have to pair your Chanel-logo nails with a Chanel ensemble—you can throw on some Old Navy and go about your day with a high-low look. But in the case of Jennifer Lopez, whose budget has fewer limitations than most, she's all for breaking the must-match rule, too, but in a much more luxurious way: wearing a high-end designer-logo manicure with a completely different high-end designer-logo outfit. Lopez was spotted in Warsaw, Poland, the day after her 56th birthday, looking absolutely radiant with long, straight hair, peachy-nude makeup, layered gold and diamond jewelry, and oversized wire-frame glasses. She paired strappy, brown, high-heel sandals with a stunning, silky, off-white Valentino dress covered in a subtle pattern of the fashion house's logo. But go ahead and zoom in on J. Lo's nails. Her designer manicure doesn't echo her Valentino ensemble, but rather her love of Gucci. Her go-to nail artist, Tom Bachik, posted close-ups of the incredible set to his Instagram Stories, giving us a clear look at the amazingly ornate art on each coffin-shaped nail. Starting with the Aprés Nail shade Girl Dinner, Bachik added instantly recognizable Gucci details like gold-accented green and red stripes, a snake, and, of course, the Gucci logo pattern. Each nail is different, and some even feature three-dimensional, bejeweled charms, like a cherry and winged insect. Now if you'll please excuse me, I'm going to take my Madewell-clad behind to the nail salon for a Marc Jacobs-themed manicure, thankyouverymuch.
