India's digital economy to cross $1 trillion by 2030: Bessemer Report

The report, titled
Click, Shop, Repeat
, finds that rising smartphone usage, affordable mobile data and seamless payments have created a 'triple engine' of commerce, content and consumer discernment, making India one of the most dynamic digital economies globally.
'Even if this grows at a simplistic rate of 20% every year, it will still cross the trillion-dollar mark,' said Anant Vidur Puri, Partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, one of the authors of the report.
'Time spent on the phone is just going up and up, access to products is far easier, and consumer aspirations have surged. What used to be a trip to the mall and a visit to the movies has now become a mobile-first experience,' he told TOI in an interaction.
The report highlighted that mobile internet penetration, with roughly 800 million smartphone users averaging almost eight hours a day online, is reshaping commerce and brand-building.
According to the findings, digital platforms have evolved into virtual shelves that enable smaller, niche consumer brands to find national prominence almost instantly.
'If you can be a new disruptor, a new trend, a unique thing in the market, the new consumer is looking for you, and platforms will come and get you. A brand can now get listed on 20 platforms almost without doing anything. That has changed in the last ten years and why it's a great time to build a brand,' Puri said.

The report also underscored the growing significance of consumer retention and its impact on long‑term growth. 'A brand can scale very rapidly, but eventually you have to live up to the test. Retention is the single most important thing, it changes your time to revenue predictability, reduces your marketing working capital, increases your Ebitda, and reduces your cash burn. You have to solve one thing, and that is retention,' Puri added.
Bessemer's findings point out that India's digital consumer market comprises many niches, making precision in pricing and positioning vital for new brands. 'India is many Indias. What's affordable for one person is different from what's affordable for someone else. You have to define very clearly, is your TAM a Rs 100 lipstick, a Rs 500 lipstick, or a Rs 1,999 lipstick? At each price point, someone will consider it 'cheap' and someone else 'expensive',' Puri said.
With an estimated 600 million people in India born after 2001, the consumer trend is being shaped by a generation for whom mobile commerce and digital payments are second nature. 'All of them, by the time they went to college, existed in a world where smartphones, blazingfast internet and e‑commerce were just facts. This generation spends more than 50% of their waking time online, that's where they shop, watch movies, consume content, learn and spend.
This is what gives us the conviction that the digital economy will continue to compound for years to come,' Puri said.
According to the report, this trend positions India to join the likes of China, where digital commerce accounts for more than 15% of the overall economy, highlighting a long runway for growth. Puri added, 'the quick commerce phenomenon, this brand‑building playbook, almost how do you build a brand for a billion Indians, you don't have to learn from the US. In India, it's about making brands relevant within the cultural context.
These are lessons global markets can learn from India.'

Lights, camera, ‘I do'... Plan to make Delhi global hub for destination weddings, events
New Delhi: Aiming to turn the city into a hub for entertainment and destination weddings, Delhi govt plans to simplify the permission processes for hosting events at historical and cultural heritage sites. Minister Kapil Mishra Tuesday told TOI Delhi has several lesser-known heritage monuments that govt may open for holding functions like book launches and cultural events. "About 70-80 monuments can be effectively used for hosting cultural and private events," he said, adding, "It must be ensured the event doesn't damage the sites." The monuments include Mutiny Memorial at Northern Ridge, Dara Shikoh Library Building at Kashmere Gate, Maqbara Paik opposite GTK bus depot, the tomb at Sadhana Enclave, the pavilions (baradari) at Qudsia Garden, Vasant Vihar and Sadhana Enclave, Ghalib Haveli at Ballimaran, Chandni Chowk, and Bara Lao ka Gumbad. A senior official said Delhi has several farmhouses, hotels and banquets that make it a sought-after destination. "We want to make the permission process simpler, including for people who do wedding photography at historical places," he said. Another meeting will soon take place, in which the department will outline plans to streamline permissions, enhance infrastructure and ensure venue availability, he added. "Promoting Delhi's rich heritage sites and luxury hotels through global tourism campaigns will attract international clientele. Incentives for wedding planners, local artisans and hospitality services can boost industry participation. Improving public transport, safety and cleanliness around popular wedding spots is crucial," he said. Mishra said the officials have been directed to design a comprehensive framework under PPP to firmly position Delhi as a global event hub. The minister recently held a meeting with industry representatives, after which the decision to strengthen the city's event industry was taken. One of the proposals discussed was the launch of a digital single-window clearance system, which would enable event organisers to quickly obtain permits and licences from a single platform, he said. "Discussions covered multi-platform sponsorship models, strategic capital subsidy schemes, and financial and marketing support to promote the MICE sector," he said. While GST relaxations were suggested at the meeting, concerns were raised about the exorbitant venue rental rates in Delhi, with professionals pointing out that organisers are often charged unreasonable fees. "Govt will ensure a transparent and fair system for venue allocations," said Mishra. Participants also stressed the urgent need for Delhi to develop its own international-standard convention centre. They also suggested utilising vacant govt lands and public spaces for events. Officials from the department of art, culture and language proposed that govt-sponsored events in Delhi should be featured on commercial platforms to enhance visibility and engagement. "I will personally bring all industry concerns to CM's attention. It's time Delhi emerges not just as a historical and political capital, but also as a global event hub," Mishra said.

Neeraj Chopra becomes brand powerhouse: Brand value soars to $30 million; non-cricket endorsements gain ground
Neeraj Chopra (TOI) India's golden boy, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra is lifting India's non-cricket endorsement scene after his recent victory at the 2025 Paris Diamond League and with the launch of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, India's first global javelin event, according to ET. The competition, held on July 5 at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium, featured some of javelin's top international athletes and attracted major sponsors like Visa, Audi India, Duolingo English Test, and Snapchat. Chopra's growing influence in the endorsements space is reflective of a larger shift in the country's sport sponsorship and marketing landscape. He along with likes of badminton ace PV Sindhu and shooting star Mannu Bhakar is driving the focus of endorsements circles beyond just cricket. Emerging sports accounted for 14% of India's ₹1,224 crore sports endorsement market in the year 2024, a jump of 46 percent, which industry experts attribute to the rising influence of athletes like Neeraj Chopra, reported the financial daily. With the leading brands both national and international making a beeline for the javelin star, Chopra's personal brand value is estimated to be around $30 million according to Kroll analysis quoted in the report. With that staggering figure he is placed just behind the leading cricketers of the country. His brand roster now includes some 20 big names, including the brands like Tata AIA, Audi India, Visa, Krafton and Under Armour. Chief commercial office of JSW sports, which manages Chopra's brand engagements, said their emphasis has consistently been on making selective choices. "Over the last fiscal year, we've seen a clear and strategic evolution in Neeraj's brand portfolio. The mandate from the very beginning has been to be focused, deliberate, and selective," Karan Yadav, chief commercial officer at JSW was quoted as saying. "Instead of maximising volume, our goal has been to align with brands that resonate with Neeraj's personality, values, and passions." One instance is Chopra's recent partnership with Audi India."Neeraj's authentic passion for automobiles made Audi a natural partner. The alignment was so strong that the collaboration became a seamless extension of Neeraj's identity," Yadav explains. Rate cuts not magic bullets': Raghuram Rajan flags structural hurdles: urges reforms
Raghuram Rajan (TOI) Former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan has cautioned that recent repo rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India are not a 'magic bullet' for driving investments, emphasizing that multiple other factors also influence economic growth. Rajan also noted that current interest rates are not excessively high and that the effects of the RBI's recent rate cuts will take time to materialize, reported news agency PTI. "And as you correctly point out, (high) interest rates were an argument (earlier), but I do not think that can any longer be an argument. I do not think that necessarily this (rate cuts by RBI) will be a magic bullet to propel investments," Rajan told PTI Videos. On June 6, the six-member monetary policy committee, led by RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra, cut the benchmark short-term lending rate by 50 basis points, bringing the total rate reduction to 100 basis points in a short span. The committee also shifted its policy stance from accommodative to neutral and introduced liquidity-boosting measures. Rajan was asked whether the recent repo rate cuts by the RBI would be enough to encourage corporates to ramp up their investment plans. The noted economist said, "Some of the other factors, including creating more of a transparent sort of playing field and creating more competition in a number of sectors, will urge industry to be less complacent and more focused on investing to preserve their advantage and their lead". "So, I do not think it is just interest rates. I think it is a combination of I hope that more corporate investment is forthcoming," he added. Rajan also pointed out that India ink doesn't seem to be too willing in investing, in the aftermath of the great recession, in contrast to massive investment sprees, before that. "They (Indian industries) have become much more circumspect, and they can not keep saying this is the condition of the domestic economy - earlier, they were saying the lower middle class is not spending, rural areas are not spending. Now it is flipped over. It is the upper middle class which is not spending," Rajan, currently a professor of finance at Chicago Booth, said. The latest numbers put out by the ministry of statistics show private sector investment at a 11-year lows. "And as you correctly point out, interest rates were an argument, but I do not think that can any longer be an argument," he said. In FY24, the private sector's contribution to gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), a key indicator of investment in physical assets, declined to 32.4%. When asked whether the RBI has room for additional rate cuts following the drop in CPI inflation to 2.1% in June, Rajan said he prefers not to comment on the central bank's policy decisions. "Let me just say that we are in a very comfortable situation as far as inflation goes, and to some extent, the tariffs on imports in industrial countries, which may sort of propagate from the US to other countries, tend to be disinflationary for countries that export," the agency reported. Rajan said although the central bank is targeting headline inflation, he wouldn't pay as much attention to headline numbers, rather take core inflation into account. "But I would also take a look at core inflation at such times, just to satisfy myself that the disinflationary impulse is across the board. "And if you look at core inflation, it is somewhat higher than the headline number," he noted. CPI headline inflation fell to 2.1% in June 2025, the lowest year-on-year rate since January 2019, with crude oil prices remaining stable. Food inflation stood at -1.06%, and assuming a normal monsoon, the RBI has projected FY26 inflation at 3.7%. While referring to core inflation within the RBI's tolerance band, Rajan added, "Interest rates are not at this point overly high after the rate cuts that RBI has made, and we will have to wait for some more time to see how things play out". When asked about the rise in net outward FDI, Rajan said FDI is complex and not limited to greenfield investments. "It is not just people putting sort of money on the ground in greenfield projects," he noted, adding that "sometimes you know what they take out in terms of dividends, etc, counts negatively on FDI. I do worry about that." Rajan emphasized that with many companies pursuing a China-plus-one strategy, "we should be getting much more of that kind of FDI." He added that India, particularly some southern states, should attract FDI seeking strong logistics and a skilled workforce Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
