Romy Gonzalez has become invaluable, and other Red Sox thoughts
'I attribute it to health. That's No. 1,' Gonzalez said. 'Just being healthy and my body being able to do what I want it to do.
'That and the hitting staff has been great. Rob
[Refsnyder] has been a huge help, too. Just everyone here, it's a great environment. We constantly bounce ideas off each other and we're always talking ball.'

Gonzalez, 28, gives the Red Sox another righthanded bat. Over the last two seasons, he started games at all four infield positions and center field, plus has come off the bench to play a few innings in right field and left field.

Alex Cora's
best teams have had players like that, from
Brock Holt in 2018 to Kiké Hernández in 2021.
'AC has done a great job of giving me a day when I need it,' Gonzalez said. 'The training staff as a whole has been excellent. I love it here.
'People ask all the time about what happened between Chicago and Boston. I think it was just being able to stay on the field. It has been great to contribute to this team.'

A few other observations on the Red Sox:
▪ The Sox were 13-9 with a .797 OPS and averaged 5.82 runs in their first 22 games after trading Rafael Devers. The Giants were 10-12 with a .657 OPS and averaged 3.59 runs.
Devers played all 22 of those games, posting a .706 OPS and going 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position with eight strikeouts.
He also has been limited to DH because of groin and back issues. The Giants still plan on him playing first base this season.
▪ The Sox did a fun thing for Cora on Wednesday.
It was Puerto Rico heritage night at Fenway Park and the team arranged for his 7-year-old twin sons, Isander and Xander, to throw out first pitches.
Unbeknownst to her father, Camila Cora took her brothers to the park and snuck them on the field. Cora didn't realize his sons were there until just before the first pitch.
He caught one of the pitches and Mike Lowell handled the other.
▪ Ceddanne Rafaela will play for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic. He made his commitment to manager Andruw Jones
in May when they met in Atlanta.
'I'm excited about it,' said Rafaela, who is from Curacao. 'When [Jones] asked me, of course I wanted to.'
Xander Bogaerts also has signed on with the Dutch.
▪ Lucas Giolito turns 31 on Monday and will celebrate with his family in Boston. He'll stay in town to catch the Indiana Fever-Connecticut Sun WNBA game at the Garden on Tuesday.
Like everybody else, he wants to see Caitlin Clark
play.

▪ Per the Hall of Fame, Wade Boggs, Dennis Eckersley, Carlton Fisk, Pedro Martinez, and Jim Rice
are among the former Sox players who will return to Cooperstown for induction weekend.
David Ortiz had a scheduling conflict.
▪ Bobby Jenks, who
Jenks opened the season as a set-up man for Jonathan Papelbon,
but pitched his final game of the season on July 7 because of a back injury. He never played again in the majors.
Jenks had unsuccessful back surgery in December and then reached an agreement with the team to terminate his contract in 2012.
He later sued Massachusetts General Hospital and
Jenks was a quiet guy who seemed to embrace a new team, but like many things that season for the Sox, it went awry.

Is A's Brent Rooker, an early out in the Home Run Derby, on Giants' radar?
ATLANTA — It's midsummer, which means prominent A's players are linked to trade rumors. Mason Miller was an All-Star last year and got all sorts of attention as a potential acquisition but didn't go anywhere. This year, Miller remains on the radar, but DH-outfielder Brent Rooker is the All-Star who is attracting rumbling. Right-handed hitter with power? Signed long-term to a reasonable deal with a team that's got little chance of making the postseason and needs pitching? Could Rooker — who wound up in a mini-controversy during Monday's Home Run Derby — be a San Francisco Giants target? He played two games for Bob Melvin 's Padres in 2022, he's known for his leadership skills and level-headedness, seems like a fit for the Buster Posey mold and the Giants could use another big bat. 'Those kinds of rumors have been there the last three years,' Rooker said of being linked to numerous teams. 'I don't pay much mind to it.' More For You Why Giants' Randy Rodriguez is an All-Star players picked, but don't want to face Giants' Gavin Kilen following MLB path from Wisconsin blazed by 'Big Gav' Lux Considering his long journey to become an everyday big-leaguer — traded twice, released once, three different organizations before the A's claimed him on waivers from Kansas City in 2022 — being a trade-deadline darling is a little unexpected. 'Definitely,' Rooker said. 'Things change quickly from that kind of perspective, but at the end of the day, the goal is the same: Show up and get better every day, help my team win every day and not really focus on anything outside of that.' Monday night, Rooker's focus was on the area beyond the left-field fence at Truist Park. With his longtime coach — Joe Caruso, who's been pitching to him since Rooker was 9 — throwing, Rooker clocked 17 homers in the first round, his longest traveling 471 feet. His wife, Allie, sported a rally cap with Rooker printed backward and cheered while holding younger daughter Blake; Rooker even helped give Blake a bottle during one break. They all had a great time, but: Rooker tied big-league home-run leader — and eventual Derby champion — Cal Raleigh in that first round. That used to mean a swing-off if the final spot to move on was at stake. Instead, they went to the longest homer, and Raleigh's longest went less than an inch more than Rooker's big blast, 470.61 feet to 470.53 feet, according to Major League Baseball. 'You know, maybe if they have it to the decimal point, they should display that during the Derby and not wait till everyone's done to bring out that information,' Rooker said. 'That might be helpful.' Rooker actually learned he'd been bounced from Raleigh, who let him know after Rooker had gone to the tunnel to stay warmed up in the event of a swingoff. 'I should be a little bit stronger,' Rooker said with a smile, 'and I might still be hitting.' Then, there's the ball total. Rooker said participants were told they could take a few pitches to start — not only did he do so, he was advising others to, too, when it came to the special 'red' baseball. However: there were only 40 balls, total, in the bucket Caruso was using, and with time still left on the clock, there were no balls left. Rooker was supposed to be able to swing at 40 balls; it was 38, instead. With time on the clock, he might have hit another homer or two and been the one to move on. 'I think we were shorted two balls,' Rooker said. 'With five seconds left, we were out of baseballs.' Pittsburgh's Oneil Cruz put together the biggest first round, with 21 homers, including one that went a Truist Park record 513 feet at 118 mph. Another potential target for San Francisco is an American League All-Star teammate of Rooker's. Orioles right fielder-DH Ryan O'Hearn hits lefty, which makes him a little less of a potential fit, but he's been mentioned in connection with the Giants at times, particularly before Posey landed Rafael Devers from Boston last month. 'I asked my family to stop sending me articles about that,' O'Hearn said. 'It's a compliment for one, and I appreciate it, it means you're doing something right. But I kind of have to focus on the Orioles right now. If something like that happens, I'll deal with it when the time comes, but the Giants are a historic organization, they've got a great ballpark and great fans. There are a lot of cool things about them, for sure.'
