Pop Idol star makes same British royal discovery as Danny Dyer after nine years
EastEnders icon Danny Dyer left viewers gobsmacked when he found out his bloodline had been linked to English Royalty, and now a Pop Idol celebrity has stumbled upon a similarly astonishing discovery.
Will Young is set to appear on Who Do You Think You Are? where he's poised to uncover a bombshell that promises to shake his world to its core.
The 46-year-old chart-topper delves into historical records to trace any hidden secrets within his family tree. In an episode that promises to drop jaws, the Pop Idol winner discovers a connection to Hugh Le Despenser, a one-time confidant of King Edward II.
Hugh Le Despenser, a name etched in history, had amassed great wealth by acquiring lands in South Wales, becoming one of the wealthiest men of his era, reports Surrey Live.
But the revelations didn't stop there, Will was astounded to learn that he is a direct descendant of King Edward I, not once but twenty times over. Known as the Hammer of the Scots, Edward I reigned as King of England from 1272 until 1307.
Overwhelmed by the magnitude of his lineage, Will described the revelation as "soul nourishing" and expressed his astonishment: "I didn't expect it, my 20 times great-grandfather was Edward I, that's just bonkers, and then we move to the man, the myth, the legend, the horror that is Hugh Le Despenser, who's just an absolute monster of a man."
The episode took a poignant turn as the artist learnt his late grandfather Digby Young had been a bomber pilot and prisoner of war during WWII, a fact previously unknown to him.
Digby was detained in a German-occupied prison in Poland until he talked his way out and earned the role of Squadron Leader, piloting jets.
Will shared poignantly: "It's completely not how I saw him at all. I didn't know he went on to do any of this. Now I feel like I've got another grandfather. I didn't feel like I had a right, really, to claim another grandfather, because I didn't know him."
To honour his grandfather's memory, the pop star had a tattoo done with Digby's squadron number.
Will's revelation shares similarities with actor Danny Dyer's discovery that he descends from William the Conqueror and King Edward III, uncovered on the 2016 series of Who Do You Think You Are?
Like Will, Danny also found out he was related to Thomas Cromwell, the counsellor to Henry VIII and protagonist of the English Reformation.
Will Young's royal discovery will air on June 3, at 9pm on BBC One.

Record-breaking Netflix movie with 103 million views gets sequel
Sophie-May Williams Published July 3, 2025 11:11am Link is copied Comments It's a big day for movie lovers, as Netflix has dropped the trailer for a highly anticipated sequel. Troll 2 is the follow-up to the wildly popular Troll - a 2022 Netflix movie which became the streaming service's most-watched non-English language movie ever with more than 100 million views to date. But for those who have yet to see Troll, let us give you some background (Picture: Francisco Munoz) Troll follows Nora Tidemann, a Norwegian palaeontologist whose father, Tobias, lost his professorship for his belief in the existence of mythical creatures. However, when a troll reawakens deep inside the mountain of Dovre, Norway, after being trapped for thousands of years, it begins to destroy everything in its path. Thus, proving that Tobias was right all along (Picture: Netflix) As the troll heads to Oslo, with Nora believing he is trying to return home, the government orders an evacuation of the capital. Once the residents have left, they plan to bomb the city to kill the troll. However, Nora convinces the military to rethink their plan after learning that trolls are vulnerable to direct sunlight. Instead of destroying Oslo, she plans to expose the creature to UV rays in a bid to save the city (Picture: Netflix) Following the troll's demise, Norway's population tries to regain some sense of normality. However, Nora is convinced that there are still other trolls out there who may seek revenge after they were wiped out by Christian settlers. During the closing scene, a deep roar is heard inside the Dovre mountain cave, meaning the country still isn't safe. The ending was also the perfect way to suggest that a sequel may be in the works. Three years later, fans will finally be able to find out what happened to Nora - and Norway (Picture: Netflix) As for the trailer for Troll 2, the suspense is real. It seems that Nora and her partner have proven that there are more trolls in existence, and they're seeking revenge. In the last 10 seconds of the footage, Nora is seen standing in snow-capped mountains, being confronted by an angry troll. As she raises a gun to it, another emerges from the snow behind her. Then, the screen fades to black (Picture: Netflix) The trailer has already been viewed more than 700,000 times, with many fans sharing their excitement. 'Nordic folklore is magical, we need more movies about it!' one person penned, as another predicted: 'They're going to eat her, and then they're going to eat the world. OH MY GOOOOOD.' Elsewhere, a third typed: 'Really enjoyed the last one! I'm getting a "let's fight fire with fire" vibe with this one!' while a fourth echoed: 'Absolutely loved Troll… So HYPED UP for Troll 2' (Picture: Netflix) We already know from the trailer that Ine Marie Wilmann, who plays Nora, is back for round two. Other returning characters include Kim Falck as Andreas and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen as army major Kristoffer. Roar Uthaug is also credited as the director once more (Picture: Netflix) At the end of the trailer, it's revealed that Troll 2 will be released on December 1, only on Netflix. Granted, it's not the cheeriest festive title. But given it's set in Norway, and that the trolls literally emerged from the snow, the setting couldn't be more apt (Picture: Francisco Munoz) Ahead of the trailer drop, director Roar Uthaug said: 'I am beyond proud of how audiences around the globe connected with the first Troll film far beyond what we imagined. With the sequel, we are aiming high - expanding the scope, deepening the story, and creating a troll-sized spectacle like you've never seen before. I cannot wait for fans to experience the adventure we have in store' (Picture: Netflix) As for Ine Marie Wilmann, she noted that 'diving into the Troll adventure was incredibly fun the first time around.' She also said she was 'amazed by its global success.' In terms of the sequel, she added: 'It is with great respect and excitement that I embarked on creating the sequel. I hope and believe that people will enjoy more of what they appreciated last time. We certainly had a fantastic time making Troll 2, and we are really looking forward to sharing it with the world.' Finally, producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud revealed what viewers could expect. They said: 'It's always daunting to do a sequel but we truly feel that this time, we've created an even better, bigger, funnier, and more adventurous film - if that's even possible!'

Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders pulled in major TV schedule shake up
Emmerdale and EastEnders will not air tonight and Coronation Street is off the schedule on Friday. Soap fans are in for a frustrating few days as a major schedule shake-up means Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale have all been pulled from screens tonight and tomorrow. Thursday evenings usually feature a full hour of Emmerdale and a visit to Albert Square via EastEnders, but neither will air tonight (Thursday, July 3). And Coronation Street viewers are in for disappointment too, as Friday's episode (July 4) has also been bumped from the schedule, Mirror reports. It's all down to the BBC and ITV's blanket sports coverage, with Wimbledon taking centre stage this week. The tennis tournament has dominated BBC programming, joined by live coverage of the Women's Euros, as football teams across Europe fight to make it through the group stages. ITV, too, has made space for the beautiful game. On Friday night, they'll be broadcasting the clash between Germany and Poland, following Portugal's meeting with Spain tomorrow, leaving Corrie fans with an extended wait for their next trip to Weatherfield. While EastEnders devotees had a double helping earlier this week, with hour-long specials on both Monday and Tuesday, those tuning in live had to head over to BBC Two, with others opting to stream the soap on iPlayer. There's some good news for fans of the Walford drama: when it returns next Wednesday, another double bill awaits. Emmerdale will be back a day earlier, returning to screens at 7.30pm on Tuesday, July 8. But Corrie fans will need to wait until Wednesday for the next dose of drama, with its usual Monday slot also falling victim to the Euros. Despite the disruption, ITV has softened the blow with a major digital update. From Monday, June 30, full episodes of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale have been available to stream on YouTube from 6am, hours before their TV debut on ITVX and traditional broadcast. Announcing the move on Instagram, the official Coronation Street account posted: 'Soap fans, rejoice! Starting tomorrow, full episodes will be available on YouTube from 7am, the same day they air on TV!' The update was paired with a graphic showing characters from both soaps beaming beneath their iconic show logos. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! From 2026, ITV will launch a new soap power hour, with half hour episodes of Emmerdale airing at 8pm followed by Coronation Street at 8.30pm. To mark the change, a one-off crossover special will air in January 2026, bringing characters from both shows together in a dramatic hour-long episode. Producers have promised 'everlasting consequences for everyone involved' and teased that the two fictional universes in Yorkshire and Manchester have been linked in an 'ingenious way'. So while the soaps may be missing from the evening line-up, fans still have a way to keep up, just not in the usual way.
