Dramatic moment Ryanair passenger sobs as hand luggage row sees her banned from flight

A Ryanair passenger ended up sobbing after she was stopped from boarding a plane.

Dramatic footage from Sofia Airport in Bulgaria shows a tearful woman brought to her knees in distress. She was seen banging on a door in frustration, begging security staff to allow her onto the plane.

According to online reports, the incident took place on July 24 and involved a flight from Sofia to Vienna, Austria. Witness Nikolay Stefanov explained that the drama unfolded when staff working on behalf of the airline told the woman that her bag was too large.

She claimed that it fit into the sizer, prompting an argument with gate staff and then the would-be passenger to turn to her fellow flyers, urging them not to leave her at the gate.

"She was pleading with us not to leave, but we were threatened that the entire flight would be cancelled if we didn't get on the bus, so passengers became frightened and left," Nikolay said.
"What shocked me most was the utter lack of compassion from the staff member, who looked right through the woman with complete indifference. Even though they could have resolved the problem, they simply refused."
He claimed that the staff member attempted to confiscate the phone of a customer who was filming the incident. According to eyewitnesses, the woman's bag was a centimeter larger than the requirements, Boulevard Bulgaria reported.

Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Grozdan Karadjov has ordered an inspection of the airport's security cameras following the incident, Bulgarian news site Fatki.bg reports. He reportedly condemned the "outrageous behavior of the employee of the ground operator".
"Instead of making an effort to reduce the tension during these peak travel months, he contributes to escalating emotions and treats her rudely," he added. "Everyone agrees that the ground operator has not fulfilled its obligations to the required level."
A spokesperson for Goldair Handling Bulgaria, which provides the ground handling services for several flights operating out of Sofia Airport, insisted that the employee acted "professionally and without any physical contact with the passenger".

In a statement provided to BNT News, the company said: "All rules regarding passengers' baggage, its permissible size and the fees payable for baggage are determined solely, entirely and unilaterally by the airlines, and Goldair Handling Bulgaria OOD is solely obliged to monitor compliance with these rules by the airlines.
"This also applies to hand luggage, as Goldair Handling Bulgaria OOD is obliged to monitor the dimensions of this baggage and collect excess baggage fees, which fees are determined by and are entirely for the benefit of the airlines.
"The employee only complied with the rules and procedures of the airport operator and the airline, indicating the permissible dimensions of the baggage and checking for compliance with them. They acted professionally and without any physical contact with the passenger."
Ryanair's hand luggage rules have long been a point of tension for passengers. The budget airline allows for passengers to fly for 'one small personal bag', free of charge. However, it must be sized 40cm x 20cm x 25cm and 'fit under the seat in front of you'.

Ryanair, easyJet and TUI cabin bag that's 'perfect for short trips' now just £17

"Great bag, I was amazed at how much stuff I was able to pack into it." When you're excited about going on holiday, there's nothing quite like the reality of having to pack to bring you back down to earth. This is especially true if you've decided to avoid paying extra luggage fees and are just bringing a carry-on. But with airlines having strict rules on size and weight, you can be left trying to cram a few days' worth of clothes into a small rucksack - and not doing well at it. Luckily, Debenhams has slashed the price of the Cabin Max Metz 20L Underseat Cabin Bag Backpack, which fits perfectly within the under-seat restrictions for Ryanair, easyJet, and TUI - as well as the hand luggage limits for a number of other major airlines. The Metz Cabin Bag comes in 20 different colourways, so there's something for everyone. The prices vary depending on the style, but many, including the classic black and the natty mid blue, are down to just £16.95. For this very reasonable price, you're getting a 40x20x25cm bag that "fits exactly under an airline seat", according to one delighted shopper. Debenhams say you can "pack more than you think" into the "spacious" bag. And customers agree, with one saying they were "amazed" at just how much they could fit in. Cabin Max Metz Cabin Bag £30 £16.95 Debenhams Buy HERE Product Description It has a suitcase-style opening and a flexible soft-sided design to allow packing freedom and comfort. It's lightweight at just 500g and has a front pocket with compartments for a tablet, travel documents, tickets, and pens. For those looking elsewhere, over on Amazon the Cabin Max Manhattan Backpack is also designed to fit Ryanair's restrictions. Just £19.95, and has been described as "like a Tardis" because of how much space is in the interior. An alternative choice is the IT Luggage Duo Tone Trolley Bag from Dunelm for £28. The 40x25x20cm bag has two wheels and a telescopic handle, plus carry handles, so it is easy to transport in whichever way you choose. Back to the Metz Cabin Bag, it has clearly gone down well with Debenhams shoppers as all but one of its 15 reviews are five-star. And its single three-star review is only because the buyer hasn't had a chance to use it yet. One customer was delighted with its interior size, calling it "very handy". They added: "Great bag, I was amazed at how much stuff I was able to pack into it." Another five-star reviewer said they "loved" the Metx backpack. They wrote: "I'm really happy with this rucksack! I love the colour and the fabric - it looks stylish and feels durable. The design is both brilliant and practical - with plenty of space for my clothes and daily essentials." They also hailed its use for weekend breaks and general use, adding: "Most of my clothes fit in easily, making it perfect for short trips or everyday use. Highly recommended!" As stated earlier, there were no negative reviews about the Metz Cabin Bag on Debenhams' website. Over on Trustpilot, Cabin Max has a mostly positive rating too, though some customers took issue with the sizes of their products. One person wrote: "Awful bag with tiny straps that looks more like a children's bag! It does not suit a normal built adult at all. The bag sits awkwardly on the top of your back and falls back on the top. The straps are so short almost at your neck." Someone else said: "The bag should have been a height of 55cm but it's actually 56cm. So I got fined £50." Airline free hand luggage restrictions RYANAIR: Small bag that must fit under the seat in from of you; 40x20x25cm EASYJET: Small cabin bag that must be kept under the seat in front of you; 45x36x20cm, 15kg BRITSH AIRWAYS: Cabin bag that may need to go in the hold; 56x45x25cm, and a hand bag that must be placed under the seat in front of you; 40x30x15cm. Combined weight limit 23kg TUI: Hand luggage; 55x40x20cm, 10kg, and a small personal item (e.g. handbag or laptop) that must be stored under the seat in front of you; 40x30x20cm JET2: Hand luggage; 56x45x25cm, 10kg, and a small under-seat bag (e.g. handbag, laptop, or airport purchase) that must be placed under the seat in front of you; 40x30x15cm VIRGIN ATLANTIC: Economy and Premium passengers get a cabin bag; 56x36x23cm, 10kg, and an under-seat bag that must fit under the seat in front of you; 40x30x15cm But most people who bought the bag were delighted with it. A five-star reviewer said: "Perfect free carry on - Ryanair size. This is perfect, meets the size restrictions for free carry on. The bag has 2 separate zip compartments & bits inside to organise your things. The rucksack can be made wider by adjusting the side ties." And others were so happy with their purchase that they bought more. One such shopper commented: "Arrived in good time. I ordered two different colours, happy with purchase." A similar customer said: "This is a great, sturdy backpack, ideal for taking on the plane as hand luggage. Well made with strong zips. My husband was so pleased with the quality of this bag that he purchased one in black." To snap up the Cabin Max Metz 20L Underseat Cabin Bag Backpack, click HERE. Ryanair-approved cabin case to rival Antler gets slashed by 30% in summer sale

As airlines continue to rack up steep fees when it comes to carry-on restrictions, now's the time to grab a Ryanair-approved cabin case that meets all the size restrictions as it lands on sale Why ditch style for practicality and affordability when you can have it all? Nere, a luggage brand to rival the likes of Antler, is currently hosting a major summer sale that's slashed the prices of many travel-ready pieces. Offering all of the durability and longevity you'd want for your new staple suitcase, Nere's cases boast a standout colour that means you'll never need to worry about your luggage being lost or misidentified ever again. Nere's Stori Cabin Suitcase is one of the covetable pieces up for grabs with a delightful discount. The Orchid Pink colourway is axed by a tidy 30%, saving shoppers £30. Plus, they'll help you avoid any extra unexpected charges when you get to the airport. Ryanair's carry-on size restrictions are a maximum of 40 x 20 x 25 cm, with the largest cabin bag being allowed at 55 x 40 x 20 cm. This Nere item measures 55 x 37.5 x 20 cm, comfortably meeting the larger cabin bag size requirements. One of Nere's most iconic suitcases, the Stori is a covetable piece of carry-on luggage that is the perfect travel companion for your next flight or car ride. Offering plenty of room for all of your essentials for your next weekend getaway, this cabin case comes equipped with several pockets and organised spaces to ensure your belongings are kept neat, tidy and safe on your travels. Armed with a quality ABS hard shell, this case boasts an impressive 31L capacity, though, of course, you'll need to check the maximum weight restrictions with your chosen airline to avoid further fees. Also featuring a recessed TSA-approved lock to provide extra security and peace of mind that your luggage is safe while you're on the go. Boasting a self-repairing zipper that's sure to be super convenient for avoiding any zipper mishaps while you're away, this 8-wheeled case promises quiet, smooth gliding with dual spinner wheels that mean you don't have to listen to any grating noises as you traverse the airport. Available in a rainbow of runway-inspired colours, from pastel pink to bright lilac to sleek sage green, your new suitcase is set to stand out on any flight, train ride, or bus journey and won't easily be mistaken for someone else's luggage. It's stylish, strong, and ready for adventure without jeopardising practicality and durability for style. Normally retailing for £99, this suitcase is now available for £69.30 thanks to Nere's summer sale. However, this specific discount only applies to the Orchid Pink variety, as other colours boast their own price cuts. In case you're not already convinced, this case boasts a near-perfect 4.8 out of 5-star rating from thrilled shoppers who have been quick to sing the praises of their new cabin case. One happy shopper gushes: "Brilliant case! Compact but spacey enough to hold all I need for a weekend away! The solid outer shell gives all the protection needed with an on trend colour too!" Another buyer beams: "Excellent case fits everything I need for a weekend away! Solid outer shell and roomy inside with gorgeous colours!" And a third enthuses: " This suitcase was a perfect size for a week away. It wheels smoothly and the handle is easy to get up and down quickly. It easily fits inside the overhead locker on planes (I have flown both Ryan Air and Wizz Air with it). Highly recommend this cabin suitcase." Though this less-than-happy customer does share their experience, noting: "Unfortunately the Stori carry on case is underwhelming with a very flimsy and unreliable handle which makes maneuvering of the bag a struggle when rushing from flight to flight. A sad story indeed." But that appears to be a rare opinion as plenty of other shoppers have raved about the case's durability and sturdiness, as this Nere fan points out: "I'm constantly on the move and need luggage that's not only functional but also stylish and reliable—and the Nere cabin luggage ticks all the boxes. From the moment I started using it, I noticed how thoughtfully designed it is for frequent travelers. The sleek, modern aesthetic makes it stand out without being flashy—perfect for maintaining a professional look while on duty. Beyond looks, it's built to perform: smooth 360° spinner wheels make navigating terminals effortless, and the sturdy telescopic handle feels solid even after continuous use. Its compact size is ideal for short layovers and fits easily into overhead compartments, yet it's surprisingly spacious." This buyer goes on to add: "The internal compartments are well laid out, with enough room to organize essentials for 1–3 day trips, which is often all I need when flying back-to-back routes. Durability-wise, it's handled the daily wear and tear of crew life beautifully. Zippers, wheels, and shell all hold up well even with frequent use. It's lightweight too, which is a huge plus when you're dragging it through multiple airports in a day. Whether you're crew or just a frequent traveler, this bag makes the journey smoother and more stylish. I couldn't recommend it more highly." If you're looking for other Ryanair-approved cabin cases, check out this Cabin Suitcase in Dune Yellow—Icon Stripe from Antler, which is now on sale for £111, down from £185. Or, head over to Amazon to find this 55×35×20 cabin suitcase for the more wallet-friendly price of £49.99.
