Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation tells bus makers to make design, safety upgrades for better inclusivity

Bengaluru: To make bus commute more inclusive and passenger-friendly — particularly for women — Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has directed bus manufacturers to redesign grab handles, citing accessibility and convenience issues in overcrowded buses. At present, passengers often cling to side poles near seats for support, as existing grab handles are either too high or not within easy reach. This is especially difficult for shorter passengers — both women and men — and those travelling with backpacks during peak hours. The problem has become more pressing since the rollout of the Shakti scheme, which offers free bus travel for women. Of the 40 lakh daily BMTC passengers, more than 23 lakh are women. "We've advised Tata Motors, Switch Mobility, and others to design grab handles that make travelling convenient for women passengers," BMTC MD Ramachandran R said during a panel discussion on inclusive mobility at WSSTL 2025, a symposium hosted by the World Conference on Transport Research Society and Indian Institute of Science. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru He added that BMTC is steadily transitioning to ultra low-floor buses to improve access for women, the elderly, and children. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 반지 그 이상의 가치를 월 2만 원으로 만나보세요 굿네이버스 더 알아보기 Undo Other measures include pneumatic doors with exterior buttons to aid boarding, especially at crowded bus stops. In a boost to safety, over 5,000 CCTV cameras have been installed inside city buses. All new electric and BS-VI buses come equipped with surveillance systems, part of a wider effort to improve security for women. However, not all changes have translated into a smoother ride. Pranathi R, a daily BMTC passenger, said: "While travelling in electric buses, I felt discomfort because the drivers applied sudden brakes. If we fail to hold the handrails, we almost get thrown out. Later, I got to know that drivers of e-buses aren't regular employees of BMTC but outsourced staff. BMTC should ensure that drivers have adequate driving experience. " Revamping grievance redressal Highlighting the need for faster response during emergencies, Ramachandran said BMTC is exploring more effective grievance redressal systems tailored for women. "The existing response is time-consuming; there's a need to look for a more efficient mode, maybe a WhatsApp chatbot or others," he said. Currently, the Namma BMTC app includes an SOS button and control room access, but officials acknowledge the need for faster, tech-enabled solutions. Infra & upkeep shortcomings Beyond the buses, BMTC is tackling broader infrastructural gaps. Of the 9,000 bus shelters in Bengaluru, only 1,400 are electrified, leaving thousands poorly lit and often unsafe at night. The shelters are managed by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which has committed to lighting up more shelters. There are also persistent issues of buses not halting at designated stops or skipping stops altogether, adding to the frustration of commuters. Ramachandran admitted that many passenger amenities, such as lounges and waiting rooms at major TTMCs (traffic and transit management centres), suffer from poor upkeep. For instance, at Shantinagar TTMC, waiting rooms and toilets were built for airport-bound passengers more than a decade ago. But poor maintenance has made them nearly unusable.

Father-son Kumbh Mela journey rewarded with special edition bike

Udupi: The 23-year-old Prajwal Shenoy, who took his father to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela on his 25-year-old Hero Honda Splendor motorcycle, was offered a Centennial Collectors-Edition bike by the company as a gift. When he failed to get train or flight tickets, Prajwal commenced his journey on the bike with his father, Rajendra Shenoy, as a pillion from Machakal in Shirva of Udupi district on Feb 6 and reached Prayagraj on Feb 10. Recognising his passion for adventures on the bike, Hero MotorCorp gifted Prajwal the Centennial Collectors-Edition bike. Vijay Kumar T Karne, managing director of Shakti Motors, Udupi, handed over the bike and safety gear to Prajwal in the presence of manager Rahul Mirajkar on Saturday. Prajwal told TOI that he received the Centennial Collectors-Edition bike as well as safety gear as gifts from the company. "They recognised my adventure of riding with my father to participate in the Maha Kumbh Mela and other trips. I covered 16 states of India on the bike earlier. While some of the rides were solo, the majority of the trips were accompanied by my father as a pillion rider. My father and I travelled to Ladakh too," said Prajwal, who is a second-year student of the hotel management and tourism course at the Srinivas Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Prajwal said his father readily agreed to traverse nearly 4,000km on a bike when there were no other options for travel. He recalled the spiritual moment that made him and his father happy to reach the sacred Sangam for a holy dip during the Maha Kumbh Mela, a rare spiritual gathering that occurs only once in 144 years. "We rode the bike throughout the day and rested in a tent near petrol bunks. We covered over 3,900km in nine days while riding an average of 550 to 600km per day," he said. Prajwal's father, Rajendra Shenoy, is a businessman.

NE's 1st Emergency Landing Facility at Moran to be ready by Oct: CM

1 2 3 4 Dibrugarh: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday inspected northeast's first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), currently under construction on NH-127 at Moran in Dibrugarh district. The 4.2 km-long facility, being built at Rs 99.86 crore on a four-lane highway stretch, is set to be fully operational by Oct after final technical clearances. During his visit, the CM was briefed by officials from the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the IAF, who informed him that the project has achieved 99% completion and will be ready by Jul 31. The ELF is designed to serve both military and civilian purposes. During emergencies, civilian aircraft can utilise the facility. Additionally, it will support fighter jets like Sukhoi-30s, Rafales, and Tejas, as well as transport aircraft such as Hercules and Antonov AN-32. During emergencies, the designated highway stretch will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic and converted into an airstrip. "The ELF will be a game-changer during emergencies. Not only will military aircraft benefit, but civilian flights in distress can also land here. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '암보험' 최적가 비교추천! He also announced plans for a commemorative air show during the facility's activation ceremony. "An air show will be organised during the activation of the ELF. I believe that the ELF will be ready for activation from Oct," Sarma stated, though he refrained from providing a specific date. The CM said the ELF would also enhance disaster response capabilities, particularly during Assam's frequent floods. The CM announced that two additional ELFs will be constructed in Assam — one between Barama and Tihu and another in Sankardev Nagar (Hojai) between Nagaon and Lumding. The chief minister also disclosed plans for an extensive network of helipads along the Numaligarh-Dibrugarh-Tinsukia four-lane highway corridor. These helipads will be strategically positioned at intervals of 50 to 100 km, creating a comprehensive aerial support network for emergency response operations. "These helipads will be crucial during floods, enabling swift evacuation and relief operations," Sarma said, adding that discussions with the central govt were underway.
