2025 AMA People's Choice Winners DEVILSKIN Release New Track 'Swelter'

Scoop13-06-2025
Undoubtedly New Zealand's hottest rock ticket at the moment, Devilskin present their second single and first video from the forthcoming album RE-EVOLUTION.
Fresh from taking out the coveted People's Choice Award in the recent Aotearoa Music Awards, climbing all over rock radio with the bold, upbeat single 'Half-Life of Dreams', AND currently immersed in a 12-date NZ tour, Devilskin release the incendiary track 'Swelter', which see's vocalist Jennie Skulander towering over one of the sickest riffs you'll ever hear.
As Skulander monster-hulks her way between flashes of calm and vicious sonic intrusions, this song, with its razor riffage and Jennie's devastating delivery, is immediately compelling and contagious. This is bold and right in your face as Jennie belts out the first lyric 'Everything, anything you want to be, you can be, you just need the right philosophy!'
Addressing the subject of personal responsibility and achieving your potential, lyricist Paul Martin comments 'I had this odd neighbour for a while. His life was junk food, gaming, living with mum, and generally being inert; so I developed this story for him. When Nic came up with the music, with its aggression, quirks, and schizophonics, it just fell together perfectly.'
And then there's the video, directed by multi-award winning director Shae Sterling. A visual feast, the clip is an action packed 'hard ride' through some iconic Kiwi glory. Not for the first time, Devilskin show they aren't too-cool-for-school by injecting some hearty homegrown humour into the visuals and obviously having fun in the process.
Drummer Nic Martin shares his enthusiasm:
"We're absolutely thrilled to share this wild, wacky video with the world. It was a total pleasure to have our friend and long-time collaborator Shae direct the chaos with his signature style. Reminiscent of westie-glam and 80's kiwi bogan, but with a taste of modern metalcore twisted in, the replay-value on this video is sky-high."

DEVILSKIN Unveil New Album Re-Evolution

2025 AMA People's Choice Award Winners and masters of immersive music, DEVILSKIN today release their new album RE-EVOLUTION, a collection of thirteen colossal songs displaying just how far they have come in their extraordinary 15-year journey. Having just completed an adrenaline-fuelled 11-date nationwide tour, New Zealand's hottest hard-rock metal act, DEVILSKIN, today celebrates the release of their most evocative album to date, exactly eleven years after the release of their chart-topping double platinum -selling debut album WE RISE. RE-EVOLUTION is bold. The band's sixth release is a profound collection of huge songs, both welcomingly familiar and sonically fresh. This is a dynamic perspective: the continued growth, the re-invention, and the re-evolution of Devilskin as songwriters and as artists. RE-EVOLUTION reinforces Devilskin's fearsome reputation for honesty, depth and integrity, and for writing beautiful and captivating songs. The band dives deeply from introspective personal moments to visceral nightmares, weaved with brazen chaos, and dreamy, melodic mind trips. Subject matter once again highlights the fact that the band aren't afraid to discuss the tough topics: loss; depression; phobia; anguish; addiction; death; and of course, life. Once again working with producer Dave Rhodes, the Hamilton four-piece have ascended with no limits to their creativity and ability to explore sonics and soundscapes. Devilskin say: 'We really approached this album from a fresh perspective. From the way we share demo's and ideas, to using a studio we had never been in before; the process was streamlined for precision. We knew exactly what we wanted to achieve. We set some lofty goals for ourselves and everyone pushed themselves that little bit harder. We all had the one focus, just to make this our finest work, our most expressive, expansive and evocative album.' Kicking off with the ambitious grandeur and stark confrontation that is " Red", the band instantly hit stride and display a keen awareness of the listeners wants and needs and they deliver by the bucketful. " Swelter" is fierce and unrelenting; " Desiderium" dreamy and direct; all the time the production is teasing, charming and flaying your senses. 'While we all feel the natural pressure to out-perform each previous record, this one felt remarkably relaxed, and probably more about having fun recording and seeing our visions come to life in real time. Having the control, the resources, and the right people around is key', said the band. RE-EVOLUTION is also Devilskin's first time adding guest features on the album as well. With Twelve Foot Ninja's Nik Barker and Joe Hottinger of Halestorm both lending their talents to the music, explaining: 'We had been talking to these guys for a while, and we've floated the idea of guest spots on albums in the past. This time around, all of our stars aligned and we were able to include some of our favourite people.' RE-EVOLUTION is out globally today with CD & Vinyl available from Devilskin's website, JB Hi-Fi, and select local record stores across New Zealand. RE-EVOLUTION TRACK LISTING 1 'Red' 2 'Swelter' 3 'Desiderium' 4 'Have I Come Undone' 5 'Ghosts In The Mud' 6 'Rain In The Wind' 7 'Once Forgotten' 8 'Half-Life Of Dreams' 9 'Burn Slow' 10 'Entomophobia' 11 'Celestial' 12 'An Island' 13 'Twenty-Eight'

Lorde confirms South Island concert

Lorde performs at Glastonbury in England last month. Lorde hinted the bill for her world tour would be added to, and finally the Kiwi singer has shared 2026 dates for her New Zealand set. Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich O'Connor, will play in Auckland on Wednesday February 11, followed by Wolfbrook Arena in Christchurch on Friday February 13. The Ultrasound tour kicks off in the US in September, with 45 dates listed on the initial lineup that dropped May 9. This morning New Zealand and Australia tour dates were added. Hinting that New Zealand was always going to get a show, she said last month: 'I'm feeling really keen to spend a bit more time in Aotearoa as well, which has been sort of something I've been missing the last couple of years." Her fourth album, Virgin, was released at the end of June, following a string of compelling promotional activities. The album has reached number one in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, while charting at number two in the US. Lorde debuted the track 'What Was That' in April at an impromptu set at Washington Square Park, sharing new music for the first time since 2021. The next month she popped up at a Lorde-themed club night in Sydney for a boogy. And, at the end of May, on the eve of the Aotearoa Music Awards, a cryptic invitation lured Kiwi fans to a late night session in the loo of an inner-city YMCA. There, she pulled out a lighting case from one of the toilet cubicles, turning it into a make-shift stage and serving unreleased singles - 'Current Affairs', 'Ribs' and 'Broken Glass'. After the NZ shows, Lorde will perform in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. This will be the singer's biggest world tour. Presale tickets go on sale at 1pm Tuesday July 15 via while Frontier Members can access presale tickets from 2pm Thursday July 17. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 2pm (local time) on Friday July 18. Lorde last played in New Zealand in 2023 at the Outer Fields Festival at Western Springs in Auckland.
