The 17th edition of the Chennai Rainbow Pride March unfolded with colour and solidarity on Sunday, drawing participants not just from the city but also from places like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Kerala, and Hyderabad.
The annual march stood as a powerful celebration of identity and inclusivity — a vibrant reminder that Pride is both a protest and a celebration in the city.
'There are still many rights we need, especially in terms of political recognition, marriage equality, and equal rights. The mindset of the general public will begin to change only when they start to understand the real struggles of the queer community,' said Dee, an artist working in a design production company.
This is my fourth time taking part in the Pride Walk. I'm not a part of LGBTQI+ community, but an ally, and I believe it's important to show up, support, and help empower the community.

"During Pride I see a deep capacity for love - love that doesn't ask for permission or explanation. There's something profoundly beautiful about daring to love who you love, even when the world tells you to be quiet, to shrink, or to hide. But love isn't meant to be hidden. It's meant to be celebrated, lived and shared in all its wonderful forms," she went on. "Pride is not just about identity. It's about freedom. It's about the bravery to be fully yourself in a world that often doesn't make that easy. To everyone out there still trying to find the words or the courage: You are seen, you are loved, and you never have to apologize for who you are. Happy Pride," the Norwegian royal concluded. Princess Martha Louise also has daughters Leah Isadora and Emma Tallulah with her first husband, Ari Behn, who died by suicide in 2019. She made headlines last year after tying the knot with Durek Verrett, who claims to be a sixth-generation shaman from California. After the pair's engagement in 2023, the Norwegian princess's father, King Harald V, said that his family was "delighted to welcome" Mr Verrett, the New York Post reported. Notably, Princess Martha Louise gave up her royal duties in 2022 to pursue alternative medicine with her partner by launching a joint business. She kept her royal title, but abdicated her official duties to "create a clearer dividing line" between her roles. Since meeting the self-proclaimed American, the princess has reportedly claimed she can talk with angels. Her partner, on the other hand, claims he communicates with a broad range of spirits, wields ancient medicine and has a medallion that helps ward off heavy energies, spells and darkness. Princess Martha Louise's brother, Crown Prince Haakon, will succeed his father as king.

Kolkata, often lauded for its cultural vibrancy and progressive outlook, is witnessing a transformative shift in its nightlife, particularly for the LGBTQIA+ community. To wrap up Pride month, we spoke to party goers from the community to know more about how welcoming and safe the queer social scene is in the city. 'Accessibility should be for all stratas' While five-star properties are commendable for their initiatives, the call for broader accessibility resonates strongly within the community. Souvik Ghosh, a climate crisis activist, says, 'To truly embrace the spirit of Pride, these vibrant celebrations must be accessible to every member of our community. That means moving beyond the confines of posh hotels and actively encouraging pocket-friendly pubs & restaurants to open their doors, ensuring that joy and acceptance are within reach for everyone. ' Normalising queer night, a weekly imperative The idea of a designated Queer Night is gaining traction, like Ladies Night. Reflecting upon this idea, designer and stylist Anupam Chatterjee said, 'Regular, dedicated spaces are essential for fostering community and ensuring everyone has a place to shine.' Rather than one-off events, a weekly queer night would provide a consistent and predictable space for the community. 'This kind of inclusivity puts the city forward. To gather, socialise, and express themselves freely, further solidifies Kolkata's reputation as a welcoming city. We have a Karaoke night every Thursday for the community,' added Anand Puri, owner of a city-restaurant known for its inclusivity. Inclusion to celebration What was once a discreet and underground scene is now blossoming into a visible and joyous celebration of identity, acceptance, and belonging,' said Pushpak Sen, fashion enthusiast. Fashion-lifestyle influencer Indroneel Mukherjee added, 'Kolkata's queer community needs more than safe spaces. It's time venues step up and celebrate everyone, making nightlife a true reflection of all identities. The queer social landscape is evolving, with mainstream venues recognising the importance of embracing diversity.
