Hongkongers can enjoy a five-day Easter break in 2026 without taking any additional leave, according to a list of official public holidays for next year.
The government on Friday gazetted the dates, listing out 17 days of public holidays in total for next year.
By taking two days of leave on February 16 and 20, people working five days a week can enjoy up to a nine-day break over the Lunar New Year holiday period.
Another long weekend will be from April 3 to 7, which will include the Easter holidays and the Ching Ming Festival.
"As the Ching Ming Festival in 2026 falls on a Sunday, the following day will be designated as a general holiday in substitution," a government spokesperson said.
"In this regard, as the day following the Ching Ming Festival falls on Easter Monday, the next day that is not itself a general holiday will be observed as an additional general holiday."
With both the Buddha's Birthday and Chung Yeung Festival falling on a Sunday, the Monday following these two days will be designated as public holidays.

Cut rents further to lift catering sector

Cut rents further to lift catering sector Simon Wong says visitors to Hong Kong are spending less. Photo: RTHK A catering sector representative on Saturday said rents will continue to be a challenge despite a recent reduction. Simon Wong, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades told a Commercial Radio programme that even though the SAR has been welcoming more tourists this year, business performance is worse than the pre-Covid period. This is because spending for each visitor has dropped by 20 percent. Noting that landlords have slashed rents by up to 15 percent on average in the past half-year – and even 30 percent in some districts – Wong expressed the hope that they would go down even further. "If there's so much empty space on the street, the landlords would feel that kind of pressure and they are willing to lower their rent at this moment. And I'm looking forward to more decrease in the rent because still the rents compared to other expenses are quite high," he told reporters. "Our operating expenses is comprised of rent, salaries and also food costs, and rental is one of the major expenses we encounter. So if the rent can go down by at least another 20 or 25 percent, it would help us a lot." Wong also noted that the phenomenon of Hongkongers heading north to spend is "irreversible", but he hopes that the government will expand multiple-entry visas to cover the entire Greater Bay Area, or even other mainland cities to help the catering sector. Meanwhile, Wong said he expects a campaign – which sees more than 3,800 restaurants offering discounts of up to 29 percent to celebrate the 28th anniversary of the SAR's establishment on July 1 –to boost business by up to 15 percent that day.

Eight dead in Brazil hot-air balloon accident

Eight dead in Brazil hot-air balloon accident Rescue workers scour the site where the balloon came down in Santa Catarina state. Photo: AFP At least eight people were killed on Saturday when a hot-air balloon with 21 passengers caught fire in southern Brazil, a state governor said. It was the second fatal balloon accident in the country in less than a week. "Eight fatalities and 13 survivors," Santa Catarina state governor Jorginho Mello said on X. Videos taken by bystanders and carried on Brazilian television showed the moment when the balloon erupted in flames above a rural area outside the Atlantic coast town of Praia Grande, a tourist hotspot popular for hot-air ballooning. The basket carrying the passengers plummeted dozens of metres to the ground in flames. Other images showed some of the passengers jumping. The 13 survivors were treated at hospitals, firefighters said. Officials at Our Lady of Fatima hospital said of the five survivors treated there, three were in stable condition with minor injuries and two had already been discharged. Information about the other survivors was not immediately available. An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the accident. Weather conditions were clear at the time. (AFP)

Black travel alert in place for Israel, Iran

Black travel alert in place for Israel, Iran The Hong Kong government has warned of the "highly unpredictable security situation" in Iran and Israel amid the ongoing conflict. Photo: Reuters Hongkongers should avoid making any trips to Israel and Iran, the government warned on Thursday, raising the outbound travel alert to "black" for both countries. The administration also advised residents who are in the two countries to leave or relocate immediately. The black alert, which indicates severe threat, is the highest level on a three-tier system that also includes amber and red warnings. Two other countries with a black alert are Lebanon and Syria. "Due to the highly unpredictable security situation in Israel and Iran, the [SAR] government advises Hong Kong residents to avoid all travel to Israel and Iran," a spokesperson said. "Those already there should attend to personal safety and leave or relocate to relatively safe regions immediately." Residents who require assistance may contact the Immigration Department or the Chinese embassy in the two countries, and the Security Bureau will continue to closely monitor the situation and issue updates. A total of 19 Hongkongers have so far sought help, according to the Immigration Department. Sixteen of them have already managed to leave the area. The latest conflict began when Israel launched a military attack on Iran, which led to retaliation by Tehran.
