WASHINGTON DC - The United States continues to call on the Iraqi government to bring pro-Iran militia groups, designated as terrorist organizations by Washington, under its control, a senior American official said on Wednesday.
The US has 'expressed deep concerns on terrorist-designated Iran-backed militia groups who threaten Americans and Iraqi stability. We continue to urge the Iraqi government to rein in these groups and hold them accountable for breaking Iraqi law,' Andy Halus, Public Diplomacy Counselor at the US embassy in Baghdad, told Rudaw in response to a question about reports suggesting that the US is pressuring Iraq to withhold the salaries of the pro-Iran groups within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al-Shaabi).
Several Iraqi pro-Iran militia groups warned last month that should the US support Israel in its then-escalating conflict with Iran or assassinate the Iranian supreme leader, American interests in the region would be targeted. While the US supported Israel, the groups did not openly carry out any attacks on American interests.
The US brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after 12 days of a deadly war. Despite the truce, several drone attacks have been reported in Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region in the last week. No party has claimed responsibility for the attacks which have targeted civilian and military locations.
The PMF was established in 2014 during the Islamic State group (ISIS) blitz, which saw the group seize control of large parts of Iraq's north and west.
Created in response to a fatwa, a religious edict, by Iraq's highest Shiite authority Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the PMF was initially an umbrella organization of roughly 70 predominantly Shiite armed groups, with approximately 250,000 members.

Kermanshah: 61 killed, over 500 injured in Iran-Israel conflict
Shafaq News – Tehran At least 60 people from Iran's Kermanshah province were killed and more than 500 were injured during the recent 12-day war between Iran and Israel, according to provincial officials. Khosrow Shahidi, Director General of the Martyrs Foundation in Kermanshah, told the semi-official Mehr News Agency that the death toll was based on funeral and burial ceremonies conducted across the province. "To date, 61 individuals from Kermanshah Province have been confirmed dead in the recent war with Israel," Shahidi said. "These figures are based on provincial-level funeral data." According to the breakdown, 31 of the fatalities were from the city of Kermanshah, 7 from Harsin, 6 from Kangavar, 5 from Sahneh, 4 from Sonqor and Kalayeh, 4 from Eslamabad-e Gharb, 2 from Sarpol-e Zahab, and one each from Gilan-e Gharb and another district in the province. Shahidi also noted that 532 individuals were wounded, citing data provided by the province's University of Medical Sciences. The Iran-Israel war, which erupted on June 13 and lasted for 12 days, resulted in heavy casualties and widespread infrastructure damage on both sides. The conflict also saw US involvement, including strikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

Khamenei Representative to Shafaq News: No retreat on supporting Regional Resistance
Shafaq News – Basra Iran will continue supporting armed 'resistance factions' in Iraq and across the region, Mujtaba al-Husseini, the representative of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatullah Ali Khamenei in Iraq, told Shafaq News on Wednesday. Describing the groups' growing military strength as a source of fear for their adversaries, al-Husseini vowed that 'Iron Dome and Israeli weapons proved ineffective in the war with the Islamic Republic.' According to al-Husseini, the influence of Islamic resistance movements has expanded across Iraq, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and beyond. This regional presence , he claimed, 'is the main reason behind US and Israeli efforts to target Iran.' He also condemned the recent Israeli attack as 'treacherous,' noting that it came at a time when Washington was speaking of negotiations. 'They took us by surprise with war. Iran has to defend itself and support the resistance forces,' he remarked. Al-Husseini also accused the United States of 'supporting over 20,000 institutions aimed at weakening religious identity.' These organizations, he alleged, operate under the guise of promoting freedom, democracy, and liberation, while 'working against the values of local populations.' Earlier, Iranian Consul in Najaf Sayyed Saeed Al-Sayyedin told Shafaq News that Tehran no longer trusts US guarantees, referencing the 2018 American withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). 'Washington breached the nuclear agreement, and that's why Iran has no confidence in the United States,' he stated, rejecting any suggestion that Tehran initiated its current military confrontation with Israel. 'Iran did not start the war with Israel, nor did it seek to end it,' he asserted.
