Penguins 'Actively Exploring' Market on $92 Million Veteran
The Pittsburgh Penguins have made clear that veteran defenseman Erik Karlsson is not off-limits in trade discussions.

According to a report from The Fourth Period, general manager Kyle Dubas is actively exploring the market for the 35-year-old defenseman amid Pittsburgh's roster retooling under new head coach Dan Muse.
"Penguins GM Kyle Dubas has been actively exploring the market on defenceman Erik Karlsson, who comes with a $10 million cap hit and has two years left on his contract," The Fourth Period noted.
Karlsson's $10 million cap hit and full no-movement clause, however, could complicate the situation and any potential trade.
To address any potential hurdles, the report suggests that Pittsburgh may be willing to retain a portion of Karlsson's salary to facilitate a deal. On top of that, Karlsson is reportedly open to waiving the clause for the right destination, supposedly a contending team.

"Karlsson owns a full no-movement clause, but is willing to waive it for the right contending team, and the Penguins may be willing to retain a portion of his salary to help facilitate a trade," the report says. "The club has all three retention slots available for this upcoming season."

Karlsson, who logged 53 points across a full 82-game season last year, is entering the final two seasons of his eight-year, $92 million contract.
According to the same report, the Penguins are also fielding calls on veteran forwards Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust.
NHL insider Pierre LeBrun appeared on TSN's "OverDrive" on June 12 to report that Pittsburgh's front office is open to change.

'They're listening [to trade offers] on everyone that aren't legacy guys,' LeBrun said. 'You know, they're not gonna move Malkin or Crosby.'

Bucs' DL Cracks Top 10 of Impressive Offseason List
Bucs' DL Cracks Top 10 of Impressive Offseason List originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tevita Tuli'aki'ono Tuipulotu Mosese Va'hae Fehoko Faletau Vea, more commonly known as Vita Vea, has been an anchor on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defensive line since the team drafted him in the first round with the No. 12 overall pick in 2018. Advertisement The former Washington Huskies defensive tackle was a key piece of the Bucs' 2020 Super Bowl championship run and continues to be an important part of the incredible run of four straight division titles and five consecutive postseason appearances. Vea has boasted two Pro Bowl nods in 2021 and 2024, with the most recent season setting career marks. That's part of the reason Vea has appeared at No. 9 on ESPN's list of the top 10 defensive tackles in the NFL. The list was compiled by Jeremy Fowler's interviews of executives, coaches and scouts in the league. "Vea slimmed down last offseason, and the result was a career-high 7.0 sacks along with his usual run-stopping ways," Fowler wrote. "But the stats don't tell the story with Vea, whose raw strength is undeniable. 'He's the kind of guy where if you don't have him [on your team] for a while, playing defense is a lot tougher,' a veteran NFL assistant coach said. 'A true difference-maker.' Advertisement "Vea's 10 tackles for loss also marked a career high. Head coach Todd Bowles is unafraid to drop the 347-pound Vea into coverage, where he makes open-field plays." Last season, during Vea's career year, he posted 42 total tackles with 27 solo and 10 for loss with seven sacks and one pass defended while earning his second career Pro Bowl nod. Stephen Curry's Latest Announcement Leaves Fans Stunned
Stephen Curry's Latest Announcement Leaves Fans Stunned originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Stephen Curry has established himself not only as the greatest shooter of all time and one of the best point guards in NBA history, but also as a pioneer. Advertisement In a time when most NBA superstars signed endorsement deals with Nike, Jordan, or Adidas, Curry zagged when everybody was zigging. He signed a very lucrative deal to spearhead Under Armour's basketball team, and it's paid off big dividends so far. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) prepares to play the Minnesota Timberwolves before game one of the second round for the 2025 NBA Playoffs at Target Center. Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images With that in mind, Curry Brand and Under Armour will go on a World Tour this offseason, according to a report by Tomer Azarly: "Under Armour and Curry Brand announced the 2025 Curry Brand World Tour today," Azarly wrote. "Stephen Curry and De'Aaron Fox will be going on tour in August to San Francisco, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Xi'An, as well as Chongqing, and they'll host camps for high school boys and girls. They'll also host a 3-day brand culture convention, Curry Con, in Chongqing." Advertisement Fox was the first player to sign an endorsement deal under the Curry brand. They also have Davion Mitchell, Seth Curry, and Quincy Olivari on the team, and they signed collegiate stars MiLaysia Fulwiley and Japanese sharpshooter Keisei Tominaga. Curry enjoyed some much-needed time off after another strong season. The Golden State Warriors are still trying to sort out the Jonathan Kuminga situation and bring more firepower to the Bay Area because their championship window will stay open for as long as he's healthy. In the meantime, the sharpshooting star will continue to take his brand to the next level. Advertisement This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 8, 2025, where it first appeared.

The Yankees keep losing catchers and somehow keep dominating the position
The Yankees keep losing catchers and somehow keep dominating the position originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Yankees traded catcher Alex Jackson to the Orioles on Saturday morning for international bonus pool money and either cash or a player to be named later. It's the kind of minor move that barely gets noticed. But it says a lot about how the Yankees develop catchers—and why so many of them are thriving somewhere else. Advertisement Jackson didn't come up through the Yankees' system, but he spent time in it. After coming over from the Reds with Fernando Cruz in the Jose Trevino trade, he got a chance to work with catching coordinator Tanner Swanson, the same catching coach who helped mold Jose Trevino and Kyle Higashioka into major league regulars. New York Yankees teammates Jose Trevino and Austin Wells in 2024Michael McLoone-Imagn Images Now, he joins a growing list of former Yankees catchers who are contributing around the league. Trevino is starting for the Reds. Higashioka has a steady role in Texas. Luis Torrens has carved out a nice spot with the Mets. He is hitting .217/.614 OPS, 2 HR, 14 RBI, and has a .630 caught-stealing rate (9 of 21). Of course he is credited with solid framing and a 2.79 catcher ERA, fourth-best among regular backstops Carlos Narvaez, who made his debut last seasons hitting .274/.787 OPS, with 7 HR and 28 RBI across 67 games for Boston Even Red Sox manager Alex Cora had to admit it this week on Power Alley: 'I hate to admit it, but [the Yankees] are the best at turning out catchers right now.' Cora's not wrong. Swanson was brought in before the 2020 season to try and help Gary Sanchez become a better catcher. He teaches catchers to receive with one knee down on the ground and frame pitches with minimal movement. Advertisement He helped turn Trevino into an afterthought into a an All-Star in 2021. Not every guy sticks in the Bronx, but a lot of them stick somewhere. Jackson may not have cracked the lineup, but like others before him, he leaves more polished than he came in. Ironically, the Orioles were in need of a catcher because Sanchez is dealing with a knee injury.
