Monroe man arrested after neighborhood drive-by shooting, police say
The incident began with a disturbance that erupted at about 10:48 p.m. Sunday along the 800 block of Harrison Street, which is in the south side of the city, according
to a report from the Monroe Police Department.
Monroe County Central Dispatch informed officers that several vehicles were arriving in that area and a handgun was observed.
"Upon arriving in the area, officers overheard gunshots coming from the general area of the disturbance. Officers then observed a vehicle attempting to flee the scene, which was quickly stopped by the police," the report said. "During the traffic stop, none of the occupants provided information or cooperated with the investigation; however, it was determined that none of the occupants were the shooter, and no weapon was found."
As police continued to check the neighborhood, residents and witnesses provided statements and cellphone videos of a drive-by shooting.
Police later confirmed that one of the gunshots had struck a house and nearly struck a 16-year-old boy.
Afterward, a female reported her red GMC Terrain had been vandalized. Officers determined that her vehicle was used in the drive-by shooting although someone else was the driver and possibly the shooter.
Monroe Police Department and Monroe County Sheriff's Office detectives continued their investigation and identified the shooter as a 33-year-old man from the Monroe area.
The sheriff's office Special Response Team, along with road officers and detectives, converged at a hotel on LaPlaisance Road near Interstate 75, the report said. They found the suspect in the lobby and took him into custody without incident.
"Multiple charges are being pursued in this case, including Assault with Intent to Murder and Malicious Destruction of Property," the report said. "We thank the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for their investigative work and support in this case.
"The Monroe Public Safety Department reminds citizens that such actions are unacceptable, and we will pursue offenders who commit these crimes. We also appreciate the witnesses who provided information that helped resolve this case."

Suspected tip jar thief caught by police after running from Subway in downtown Monroe
A suspected tip jar thief who ran off after police saw him was captured and taken into custody Tuesday night in downtown Monroe, Michigan. The 30-year-old man, who is from the Monroe area, was taken to the Monroe County Jail, the Monroe Police Department said in its report. Officers are seeking charges of third-degree retail fraud and larceny from a building. Their assistance helped bring this case to a swift resolution," the police report said.

Two teens arrested after leading Monroe County deputies on high-speed chase in stolen car, sheriff says
Two teen boys have been arrested after a high-speed chase in Southeast Michigan's Monroe and Wayne counties as authorities investigated a stolen vehicle complaint. The investigation is still ongoing, but the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said that the two are believed to be involved in a series of breaking and entering incidents that happened Monday evening and early Tuesday in Frenchtown Township. The investigation began after Michigan State Police handled several criminal complaints in the area of Custer Estates Apartments, which is on Mall Road in Frenchtown Township. The reports included larcenies from vehicles, attempts to steal vehicles, and a 2018 Ford Edge that was stolen. Through access to the Flock license plate reader camera system, officers learned the stolen Ford Edge was a few miles away in the area of LaPlaisance Road near Interstate 75 in Monroe Township. A Michigan State Police trooper saw the Ford Edge turning from LaPlaisance Road / Exit 11 onto I-75 northbound and provided its location. A sheriff's deputy attempted a traffic stop on I-75 near Elm Avenue / Exit 14, but the driver sped off. The stolen vehicle was pursued until the driver finally stopped at Van Horn Road and Telegraph Road in Wayne County's Brownstown Township. Both the driver and passenger were taken into custody and have been lodged at the Monroe County Youth Center. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office asks that anyone with information to assist in this investigation call the department at 734-240-7530 or submit a tip through Crime Stoppers, 800-SPEAK-UP.
