Monroe police confiscate handgun, marijuana, open alcohol containers during traffic stop

A road rage incident in which a driver was accused of brandishing a weapon is under investigation in Monroe County, Michigan. The Monroe Police Department said it handled a traffic stop in the city about 7:30 p.m. Friday, with a car that matched to the description of a vehicle involved in a potential road rage incident under investigation by Monroe County Sheriff's Office. According to the 911 call to Monroe County Central Dispatch, the driver of the sedan had "pulled a gun" in the 15000 block of South Telegraph Road near East Albain Road in Monroe Township. The car then continued northbound on Telegraph Road, driving into the city. Monroe police pulled over a car that matched the description and spoke with the driver, a 19-year-old man who lived in the Monroe area. Officers searched the vehicle and found a loaded semi-automatic Glock .357, open alcohol containers, several suspected narcotic pills, and marijuana. Those items were confiscated. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating the road rage incident and the case is expected to be presented to the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office. In the meantime, the suspect was taken to the Monroe County Jail. Police ask that any witnesses to the initial incident call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-240-7415. "In light of this incident, authorities remind the public that road rage situations can escalate quickly," the police department said. "Techniques such as deep breathing, avoiding eye contact, and refraining from engagement can help defuse tense situations. If someone ever feels threatened, they are urged to call 911 immediately for assistance."

Monroe man arrested after neighborhood drive-by shooting, police say

One man is in custody after a drive-by shooting in a residential neighborhood in Monroe, Michigan, local police reported. The incident began with a disturbance that erupted at about 10:48 p.m. Sunday along the 800 block of Harrison Street, which is in the south side of the city, according to a report from the Monroe Police Department. Monroe County Central Dispatch informed officers that several vehicles were arriving in that area and a handgun was observed. "Upon arriving in the area, officers overheard gunshots coming from the general area of the disturbance. Officers then observed a vehicle attempting to flee the scene, which was quickly stopped by the police," the report said. "During the traffic stop, none of the occupants provided information or cooperated with the investigation; however, it was determined that none of the occupants were the shooter, and no weapon was found." As police continued to check the neighborhood, residents and witnesses provided statements and cellphone videos of a drive-by shooting. Police later confirmed that one of the gunshots had struck a house and nearly struck a 16-year-old boy. Afterward, a female reported her red GMC Terrain had been vandalized. Officers determined that her vehicle was used in the drive-by shooting although someone else was the driver and possibly the shooter. Monroe Police Department and Monroe County Sheriff's Office detectives continued their investigation and identified the shooter as a 33-year-old man from the Monroe area. The sheriff's office Special Response Team, along with road officers and detectives, converged at a hotel on LaPlaisance Road near Interstate 75, the report said. They found the suspect in the lobby and took him into custody without incident. "Multiple charges are being pursued in this case, including Assault with Intent to Murder and Malicious Destruction of Property," the report said. "We thank the Monroe County Sheriff's Office for their investigative work and support in this case. "The Monroe Public Safety Department reminds citizens that such actions are unacceptable, and we will pursue offenders who commit these crimes. We also appreciate the witnesses who provided information that helped resolve this case."

According to a release, on Friday, March 7, at 3:14 a.m., Monroe County Central Dispatch advised that up to 15 vehicles had been stolen from an automotive manufacturer in Toledo. Dispatch further reported that several of the stolen vehicles were being pursued northbound on I-75 into Monroe County by the Toledo Police Department. After crossing the state line into Monroe County, Toledo Police continued the pursuit. Monroe County deputies set up along I-75 to assist. As the pursuit reached the Laplaisance Road exit, Deputy Austin Graham picked up the pursuit and took over as the primary unit. The main vehicle being pursued was a black 2025 Dodge Durango, stated the release. The pursuit continued northbound on I-75 as the stolen Durango continuously dodging authorities. The chase continued until the vehicle came to a stop and the lone occupant fled on foot, just north of the Nadeau exit. Report of multiple stolen vehicles results in police chase along I-75 in Monroe County

A police pursuit along Interstate 75, spinning off a report of multiple stolen vehicles, started early Friday in Toledo, Ohio, and continued for over 18 miles into Michigan in and around the City of Monroe. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office relayed the following details in a press release about the stolen vehicles, explaining the route that was taken along the highway and efforts to pick up the suspects. About 3:14 a.m., Monroe County Central Dispatch gave a report to patrol officers that up to 15 vehicles had just been stolen from an automotive manufacturer in Toledo. Several of those stolen vehicles in pursuit by Toledo Police Department on I-75, they were crossing the state line into Monroe County. Toledo police continued to pursue the vehicles into Michigan, while Monroe County Sheriff's Office set up along I-75 to assist. As the pursuit reached Exit 11, which is the LaPlaisance Road exit in Monroe Township, one of the deputies drove onto northbound I-75 and took over as lead vehicle. The main suspect vehicle being pursued at the time was a black 2025 Dodge Durango. The driver of the Durango "continuously made evasive actions, such as crossing back and forth across all northbound lanes, turning its headlights off at various points, and attempting to 'brake check' pursuing officers," the sheriff's report said. Upon reaching Exit 15, which is the North Dixie Highway exit in Frenchtown Township, the suspect was able to avoid stop sticks. But he began to slow down as the vehicle appeared to run out of fuel. Just south of Exit 18, which is the Nadeau Road exit, the vehicle suddenly stopped. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, got out and ran off. The suspect was wearing dark clothing and a mask. He jumped the median barrier, crossed into the southbound lanes, and ran into a field on the west side of I-75. Deputies sent a K-9 and a drone to that location. A few minutes later, a deputy who was on the perimeter of the search area saw a blue Nissan Rogue stop and pick up a person in the back lot of the Pilot Travel Center at 1200 Nadeau Road, just off the I-75 interchange. Officers realized that one of those people matched the description of the suspect who ran off from the stolen Dodge Durango. Deputies tried to pull over the Nissan for a traffic stop, but that driver sped off southbound on I-75, leaving the highway at Exit 13, which is Front Street in the City of Monroe. The Nissan quickly got back onto I-75, but this time the vehicle entered the wrong way, driving southbound in the northbound lanes. This time, stop sticks placed by Monroe Police Department were able to stop the vehicle. Because of damage from the stop sticks, the driver pulled over. The two males who were inside ran off. Officers tried a K-9 track and drone in an effort to locate the suspects, but they were not found at the time. The original theft of the Dodge Durango and the other stolen vehicles is being investigated by the Toledo Police Department. The law enforcement activity in Michigan was led by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, assisted by Monroe Police Department and Michigan State Police. Deputies ask that anyone with information on the theft and suspects contact the Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau at 734-240-7530.
