We can't fund everything, choose tournaments carefully, Yeoh tells NSAs

KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of the Malaysia Cup squash tournament, scheduled for Aug 17-23 this year, remains uncertain as the organisers are struggling to raise funds to host the event.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stressed that the government has limitations when it comes to helping fund the organisation of local tournaments and urged national sports associations (NSAs) to pick and choose their events wisely.
"We always want to try our best to assist, however, we feel that associations also have to play their part," said Yeoh yesterday (June 10).
"The association must clearly plan how many events they want to do each year and determine which one is their priority.
"We have been supporting squash for other tournaments."
Yeoh, however, urged the organisers of the Malaysia Cup to speak to the ministry's secretariat for possible assistance.
"We have matching grants (to support the organisation of events) but it does not cover 100 per cent of the costs involved to organise the event," she added.
"It is a 50-50 split which means both the government and association must play their part.
"With every grant there are papers you have to submit (which takes time to process and approve). I am not sure if there is enough time.
"These are all logistical challenges. If they speak to our secretariat, I know our secretary-general (Dr K. Nagulendran) will try his best to help them."
PSA have given ACE Sports and Management - organisers of the Malaysia Cup - until the end of next month to secure sponsorship. They need roughly RM1.5 million to run the event.
The Ministry's Sports Matching Grant programme offers grants of up to 50 per cent of the costs to organise an event, with a ceiling of RM1 million.
The Malaysia Cup, formerly known as the Malaysia Open, was first held in 1975. It is one of two major tournaments held in Malaysia over the years, alongside the Kuala Lumpur Open.
The Malaysia Cup competition, which has been held at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara since 2007, has played an important role in aiding the development of Malaysian players over the years.
It is seen as an important tournament to help boost Malaysia's preparations for an assault on the podium at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, when squash will make its Olympic debut.
Squash legend Datuk Nicol David has won the tournament a total of eight times. Malaysia's current top players Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari have also won the tournament previously.

Sanjay aims to break into world top 50

KUALA LUMPUR: After a season of up and down, squash player Sanjay Jeeva aims to break into the world's top 50. The national No. 2 achieved his highest world ranking, 58th, in March before dropping to 68th last month. Sanjay, 26, lost most of his matches either in the first or second rounds in PSA tournaments. In February, he did well to reach the semi-finals of the Goodfellow Classic in Canada. "I think the past season was mixed. I had a really good first half, beating some top players but I struggled to keep that momentum in the second half of the season. "In the new season (August, 2025 to June, 2026), I hope to be more consistent and break into the world top 50." His next tournament will be the National Championships in Penang from Aug 13-17. Sanjay will be looking to win the national title in the absence of world No. 12 and national No. 1 Ng Eain Yow, who is based in the United States.

The Borneo Post races into Initial M SIM Racing Grand Prix grand final at MESC

The finalists pose for a photocall after the organisers announced the teams qualified for the finals. KUCHING (Aug 2): The Borneo Post is among seven top teams that have secured a spot in the grand finale of the Initial M SIM Racing Grand Prix, set to take place on Aug 30 at the Metadise Electronic Sports Club (MESC). Also advancing from today's qualifiers are teams representing Bernama , RTM , Sarawak Tribune , Suara Sarawak , the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), and DayakDaily . The qualifying rounds featured a time attack format, where participants raced against the clock rather than each other. Drivers were challenged to set the fastest lap times within limited attempts on two circuits – the technically demanding Pertamina Mandalika and the high-speed Monza. The Borneo Post 's Galileo Petingi had a tough start on the Mandalika circuit, initially struggling to gain momentum before finishing with a respectable time of 1:50.190. Teammate Roystein Emmor delivered a steadier performance, clocking 1:56.304. The duo recovered strongly in the second round at Monza. Galileo recorded an impressive 1:33.294, while Roystein followed with 1:36.950, securing their place in the final. Leading both qualifying rounds was Sarawak Tribune's Alverdtekoster Anyap, who posted the day's best times 1:36.040 at Mandalika and a blistering 1:29.107 at Monza. Winners of the grand final will walk away with cash prizes of RM1,000 (first place), RM600 (second), and RM400 (third), along with gold, silver, and bronze medals, certificates, and a three-month membership at MESC. The event is a collaboration between MESC, Hazel Communication & Solutions Sdn Bhd (HazelComms), and KDJA, bringing together 17 journalists from nine media outlets. It marks a unique convergence of journalism and esports, highlighting virtual racing as a powerful platform for storytelling, branding, and public engagement.

Sultan of Selangor's Cup returns to Merdeka Stadium

PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor's Cup will make its return to the iconic Merdeka Stadium for a second consecutive year on Sept 27. At its launch ceremony at a shopping centre today, organising committee chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar said the event is a celebration of Malaysia's footballing golden age, particularly the Malaysia Cup rivalry between Selangor and Singapore during the 1970s. "It's not just about football, this is a family carnival. There will be well-planned entertainment programmes," said Karim. The historic rivalry between Selangor and Singapore spans 23 Malaysia Cup finals, with the Red Giants winning 12 of them. That same tradition is honoured each year through the Sultan of Selangor's Cup. The annual fixture will begin with a veterans match at 8pm, followed by the main clash between Selangor Selection and Singapore Selection at 9pm. Last year, over 20,000 fans turned up at Merdeka Stadium despite heavy rain, to watch Selangor defeat Singapore 2-1. Tickets, from RM15 (regular seating) to RM40 (grandstand), are now on sale. Tickets and jerseys are available at Restoran Uncle K (SACC Mall, Shah Alam), Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur, and Concorde Hotel Shah Alam.
