National women's league gets RM840k boost from KBS for development

THE National Women's League (LWN) has been granted RM840,000 under the Sports Matching Grant (GPS) by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). This marks the highest financial support ever allocated for women's football development in Malaysia. Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that the funding aims to elevate the league's competitiveness, professionalism, and prestige. 'This grant focuses on three key goals: expanding grassroots to professional participation, nurturing emerging talents, and strengthening the national squad to improve FIFA rankings,' she said during the 2025 LWN launch. Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub and women's football committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob were also present. The 2025 season features eight teams, including newcomers Young Tigress, KL Rangers FC, Kuala Lumpur FA, and MBSJ FC. Each squad is limited to two foreign players. The league began on July 12 with a 1-1 draw between Red Eagles FC and defending champions Kelana United FC. - Bernama

We can't fund everything, choose tournaments carefully, Yeoh tells NSAs

KUALA LUMPUR: The fate of the Malaysia Cup squash tournament, scheduled for Aug 17-23 this year, remains uncertain as the organisers are struggling to raise funds to host the event. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stressed that the government has limitations when it comes to helping fund the organisation of local tournaments and urged national sports associations (NSAs) to pick and choose their events wisely. "We always want to try our best to assist, however, we feel that associations also have to play their part," said Yeoh yesterday (June 10). "The association must clearly plan how many events they want to do each year and determine which one is their priority. "We have been supporting squash for other tournaments." Yeoh, however, urged the organisers of the Malaysia Cup to speak to the ministry's secretariat for possible assistance. "We have matching grants (to support the organisation of events) but it does not cover 100 per cent of the costs involved to organise the event," she added. "It is a 50-50 split which means both the government and association must play their part. "With every grant there are papers you have to submit (which takes time to process and approve). I am not sure if there is enough time. "These are all logistical challenges. If they speak to our secretariat, I know our secretary-general (Dr K. Nagulendran) will try his best to help them." PSA have given ACE Sports and Management - organisers of the Malaysia Cup - until the end of next month to secure sponsorship. They need roughly RM1.5 million to run the event. The Ministry's Sports Matching Grant programme offers grants of up to 50 per cent of the costs to organise an event, with a ceiling of RM1 million. The Malaysia Cup, formerly known as the Malaysia Open, was first held in 1975. It is one of two major tournaments held in Malaysia over the years, alongside the Kuala Lumpur Open. The Malaysia Cup competition, which has been held at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara since 2007, has played an important role in aiding the development of Malaysian players over the years. It is seen as an important tournament to help boost Malaysia's preparations for an assault on the podium at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, when squash will make its Olympic debut. Squash legend Datuk Nicol David has won the tournament a total of eight times. Malaysia's current top players Ng Eain Yow and S. Sivasangari have also won the tournament previously.

Harimau Malaya's Draw Against Cape Verde Boosts Team Confidence

SEREMBAN, May 31 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has described Harimau Malaya's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international friendly on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur as a positive development for the national team. She said the result, achieved against a team ranked 72nd in the world, will help build the team's confidence ahead of their crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam on June 10. 'I hope every match will provide new confidence for our players, especially as they prepare to face Vietnam,' she told reporters at the 14th National Junior Wushu Championship here last night. bootstrap slideshow The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and featured nearly 500 exponents from 17 teams nationwide. Malaysia will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3) as part of preparations for the qualifier. Hannah also urged fans to turn out in full force to support Harimau Malaya, stressing that the energy and chants from the Ultras can significantly lift the players' spirit. 'The cheers from fans really matter. The Ultras' songs and chants play a big role in motivating the team,' she said, citing the difference in atmosphere during a recent Manchester United-ASEAN All-Stars match without Ultras. She expressed hope the national squad can improve their ranking under the new head coach, with the support of government and corporate sponsorship. On the junior wushu championship, Hannah said her ministry has channelled RM165,000 through the Sports Matching Grant to support the five-day event.

On the contrary, we must honour our culture, arts, literature, and language... there is nothing wrong with that as long as youths set the right example,' he said. The Prime Minister said this at the Johor 2025 MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) launch at Toppen Shopping Centre here today.
