MPs Propose Ban On 'Tuk-Tuks' On Bahrain's Public Roads
The move comes after a widely circulated video clip showed a woman driving a tuk-tuk in the Diyar Al Muharraq area. Similar sightings have reportedly occurred in other parts of the Kingdom, raising questions about the legality and safety of such vehicles.
Safety Risks HighlightedIn the explanatory memorandum attached to the proposal, the MPs underscored that tuk-tuks pose a direct threat to public safety. These vehicles typically lack essential safety features, such as seat belts, durable chassis structures, and adequate lighting or signaling systems. Furthermore, they are not designed to be part of modern traffic systems and are rarely subjected to regular maintenance or technical inspections.
Call for Traffic CrackdownThe MPs urged the General Directorate of Traffic to intensify field campaigns across Bahrain to locate and deal with unlicensed tuk-tuks. They called for strict enforcement measures, including issuing fines, impounding vehicles, and seizing them in cases of repeat violations or when public safety is at risk.Preserving Road Order and Public Safety
The lawmakers emphasized that their proposal aims to uphold traffic system integrity and ensure the safety of both citizens and residents. They stressed the importance of adhering to the Kingdom's road and traffic regulations, especially as Bahrain continues to modernize its urban infrastructure.
The proposal is now expected to be reviewed and debated in the upcoming sessions of the Council of Representatives.

Ashura, repatriation and GCC prep dominate Cabinet
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting on Monday, guiding national efforts on three critical fronts - Ashura preparations, crisis response, and the upcoming GCC summit in December. Unity through coordination The Cabinet began its session at Gudaibiya Palace by reviewing the measures taken by authorities to implement the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for the organisation of Ashura. The meeting reaffirmed that openness, tolerance, and unity remain the core values of Bahraini society. Cabinet members emphasised that religious occasions such as Ashura are opportunities to strengthen national cohesion. They welcomed the outcomes of the annual meeting between the Minister of Interior and the General Authority of Husseini Processions, along with ma'atam officials from across the Kingdom. GCC summit preparations Following the royal directives, the Cabinet instructed all relevant ministries to begin coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to prepare for the 46th session of the GCC Supreme Council, which will be hosted in Bahrain this December. The Cabinet expressed confidence that the summit would further strengthen Gulf cooperation and support initiatives that benefit all citizens of the region. Crisis response praised The Cabinet also welcomed the efforts of the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other authorities in facilitating the safe return of Bahraini citizens stranded abroad during last week's regional escalation. The operation followed the directives of His Majesty the King and the order of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. Gratitude was extended to diplomatic missions of GCC and allied countries whose cooperation contributed to the success of the repatriation efforts. Strategic focus In light of the summer period, the Cabinet approved a temporary shift to a bi-weekly meeting schedule for July and August. This adjustment allows more targeted follow-up on national priorities and international engagements. The Cabinet also reviewed and approved several memorandums, including developments under the Government Priorities Framework 4.0, a transfer of Bahrain's share in the Bahrain Agriculture Development Company to Mumtalakat, trade protection measures within the GCC, and the results of national examinations for ninth and twelfth grades. Additionally, the Cabinet was briefed on recent ministerial engagements abroad and Bahrain's recognition as a leading destination for events at the WOW Asia Awards.
