Zac Efron's Ricky Stanicky movie house in Surrey Hills hits market

News.com.au3 days ago
It's lights, camera, auction at a Surrey Hills home that hosted Zac Efron, John Cena and William H Macy as it was used as the backdrop to comedy flick Ricky Stanicky.
If 14 Norfolk Rd looks a little familiar, it's because it features in about 20 minutes of the 2024 film directed by Peter Farrelly.
The owners have revealed they owe the surprise film appearance to the cancellation of Neighbours, who asked to use it for filming before being axed.
When the production crew that made the silver-screen arrangements for the gorgeous, five-bedroom house went looking for work, they connected with the team working for Farrelly — and soon after had a note in their mailbox.
'I thought it was all a hoax at first, when I got the card I just left it on the bench until they gave me a follow up call,' the owner said.
'But we were there when they were shooting in our kitchen with Zac Efron doing a scene with John Cena and Jeff Ross and Andrew Santino.
'At one stage they were having an issue with the airconditioning and they got me to come in and help them to fix it, and as I was doing that I was watching Zac and William H Macy walking around our house and I was thinking: this is surreal.'
Meeting Cena, the owner said while his handshake had been a 'big mit', the former pro-wrestler turned Hollywood star had been very friendly and thanked them so much for 'letting us use your crib'.
And with the production crew repairing a wall damaged when Cena accidentally knocked a mirror off of it, as well as a rear glass window that cracked under the heat of some of the filming lights, the family said they would absolutely do it again.
'It was a huge production. But they took a photo of everything in the house, including the pantry, and if your tomato sauce was on the third shelf on the left, that's where you found it at the end.'
Aside from furnishings, the only major change the about $80m-budget film made to the home was to cover over the pool so they could make it a garden space.
But it might be the next owners who get that chance.
'The film company now have us on their books,' they said.
'And they usually use a house a few times for different films, so it's probable they could come back for this home.'
Eagle-eyed buyers might notice a photo collage on one of the walls showing scenes of the home in the movie as well as pictures taken during filming.
But there's a lot to see around the 2016-built house, with an impressive flowing floorplan that has close to 650sq m of space under its roofline.
Features include three ground-floor living areas, a study and a main bedroom.
Upstairs there are four more bedrooms, two bathrooms and a home theatre.
Outside the pool is neighboured by a gym space, with a basketball court at the rear of the hedge-lined block.
For the next owners, the scope to entertain will be a major drawcard — especially in warmer weather when the bi-fold doors in the living room can be opened up to connect the inside with the outside.
As the family prepares to sell, Kay & Burton's Scott Patterson is taking inquiries for the $5.5m-$5.9m listing and said beyond its phenomenal entertainment spaces and expansive family accommodation, it clearly came with 'star power'.
'There's very few homes of this size and quality that have been offered to the market in the past few years,' Mr Patterson said.
'It's been a few years since I've walked into a similar home. It's an upper end of Surrey Hills and a bit of a rare offering.
'And the movie people have identified it as a really picturesque home.'
The agent added that with September starting barely a week after the home's auction date, the sale could set the tone for what was to come in spring — and the prospect of a rate cut before then could mean good news for sellers.
No. 14 Norfolk Rd, Surrey Hills, will go to auction at 2pm on August 23.

Tourism Australia nabs Robert Irwin, Nigella Lawson for new international marketing campaign

Australia's tourism bosses have hired wildlife ambassador Robert Irwin and British celebrity chef Nigella Lawson to front a new multi-million-dollar campaign aimed at luring international travellers Down Under. Tourism Australia is set to launch a fresh wave of advertisements across five countries, backed by a $130 million investment that builds on its "Come and Say G'day" platform first rolled out in 2022. Loaded with "mates," "G'days", and a nod to Paul Hogan's infamous "throw a shrimp on the barbie" catchphrase, the $130 million campaign serves up a fresh spin on well-worn Aussie cliches — this time starring a global cast to reel in the tourists. The advertisements feature the animated mascot Ruby the Roo and are tailored to individual markets, a shift from the traditional one-size-fits-all approach. "Traditionally tourism campaigns have leveraged one famous face across every market," Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said. "But for our latest campaign, Ruby will be joined by well-known talent from five different markets to showcase personal lasting memories of a holiday to Australia." Tourism Australia is no stranger to bold and sometimes divisive campaigns. From Paul Hogan's 1984 invitation to, "Slip an extra shrimp on the barbie" to Lara Bingle's infamous, "Where the bloody hell are you?", the agency has a long history of attention-grabbing efforts. Hogan helped sell Australia as the land of laid-back charm and Tourism Australia has been chasing that magic ever since. They've previously enlisted Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Delta Goodrem and poured millions into glossy global advertisements. The 2006 Bingle campaign was briefly banned in the UK for its language, but like the latest instalment, it showcased geographical icons like Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. Professor Daniel Gschwind from the Griffith Institute for Tourism said campaigns packed with Aussie icons and big-name talent can still strike a chord. He said cliches like kangaroos, wide landscapes and even throwbacks to the "shrimp on the barbie" line can be powerful if they reflect what Australia genuinely offers. "They exist for a reason, people respond to them," he said. "Why not build on brand familiarity? Tourists want to see the Australia they imagine and if trusted celebrities can help tell that story, it can absolutely work." He said Paul Hogan's campaign was a game changer for Australian tourism. "There's a whole generation, mostly baby boomers, who still remember that ad and the humour of it. So yes, absolutely, why not lean into it and build on that familiarity? When the campaign launches in the United States visitors will see 21-year-old conservationist Robert Irwin hooning across sand dunes in South Australia's Lincoln National Park, before rescuing an American tourist whose phone has been stolen by an emu. Audiences in the United Kingdom will see television cook Nigella Lawson hosting a winery lunch in Western Australia's Margaret River, where a guest drops the line, "throw another shrimp on the barbie" — prompting an awkward pause before someone corrects him, "Mate, we actually call them prawns". Other localised advertisements feature Indian influencer Sara Tendulkar, Chinese actor and TV host Yosh Yu, and Japanese comedian Abareru-kun who are joined by Australian actor Thomas Weatherall. The campaign is being previewed for Australian audiences ahead of its international debut, with official launches staggered across key market starting in China this week, followed by India later in August, the US, UK, Japan and Germany in September and South Korea in November. The advertisements will run across TV, streaming platforms, YouTube, cinema, outdoor billboards and buses. The campaign comes as Tourism Research Australia data shows international tourism to Australia continues to recover from border closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There were 7.7 million trips to Australia in the year ending March 2025, an 11 per cent increase compared to the previous year. New Zealanders made up the bulk of visitors, followed by China, the United States, United Kingdom and India. Federal Tourism Minister Don Farrell said the number of international arrivals to Australia was expected to reach a record 10 million in 2026, growing to 11.8 million in 2029. "Tourism is the lifeblood of so many communities right around the country and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs," he said.

TV stars show off glitz and glamour on 2025 Logies red carpet

It was a sea of high-reels for the ladies and polished boots for the gentlemen at a glamorous and racy Logies red carpet on Sunday night, but one legendary TV star bucked the trend and opted for a shoe choice that was completely different but also completely charming: sneakers. Julia Morris, a long-running star of the small screen, revealed the uncommon choice at The Star in Sydney for the 2025 Logie Awards. It was a pleasant surprise amid a fashion extravaganza that constantly wowed, with multiple stars decked out in stunning attire. Sophie Monk looked fabulous in a figure-hugging white gown, while Carrie Bickmore dazzled in a sparkling gold dress. Gold Logie nominee Sonia Kruger also donned a gold figure-hugging dress. Nine Today host Sarah Abo, meanwhile, was the epitome of elegance in a stark black top that matched with black pants. Red was also a key theme of the night, with Kate Miller-Heidke, Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Home and Away star Stephanie Panozzo also shining in the bright eye-catching colour. Sunrise pair Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington matched beautifully together, with Ms Barr in a flowing white robe and Mr Shirvington in sharp black. The men were generally conservative, opting for slim black-tie suits, though Matty J added some diversity with a charming pink get-up. Australia's beloved Bluey also made an appearance. The stars of the small screen gathered at The Star for the 65th annual TV Week Logie Awards celebrating the best of Aussie TV. Sam Pang opened proceedings with a brutal but hilarious roast of the various nominees and stars of TV. When riffing on the massively popular but controversial Married At First Sight, Mr Pang suggested the show's producers hire mushroom cook Erin Patterson for the next season 'as the caterer'. Both the public and the industry determine winners. Early winners include Bluey for 'Best Children's Program' and The Voice for 'Best Entertainment Program.'
