Chief executive officer (CEO) Germal Singh Khera said the airline will receive its first Boeing 737-800 freighter in Q3 2025, supporting its cargo launch. Two additional 737-800s, configured for passenger service,
"As it is our mission to support the growth of local and regional airlines, we want to become a trusted Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance (ACMI) partner that can help them increase operational agility and capture the rising demand for passenger and cargo operations, which is on the rise in the Asia Pacific region," Khera said in a statement today.
Ascend Airways Malaysia's entry into the local market was first reported by Business Times in March this year.
Ascend Airways Malaysia, a sister airline of UK-based Ascend Airways, is in the final stages of securing its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). It obtained a conditional Air Service Permit (CASP) from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) in November 2024.
"As a new ACMI airline in Malaysia, we are continuously grateful for the support, global outlook and proactive approach we receive from the Ministry of Transport, CAAM, Mavcom and other relevant authorities that are advancing the aviation industry in Malaysia," Khera said.
He added that Ascend Airways Malaysia's full flight operations are expected to start by the end of 2025.
Ascend Airways Malaysia will operate under a wet-lease model, providing ready-to-fly aircraft complete with crew, maintenance, and insurance to airlines and logistics providers. Its ACMI services allow air operators to scale their capacity during peak seasons or manage operational challenges such as unexpected flight disruptions and prolonged maintenance.
Ascend Airways UK CEO Alastair Wilson said Ascend Airways remains focused and committed to delivering flexible ACMI solutions and developing its seasonal fleet strategy between the UK and Malaysia and the Asia Pacific region.
"ACMI is a proven solution for airlines seeking to efficiently meet dynamic travel demand and unlock new revenue opportunities. We are resolute in our aspirations to be leaders in this space," he added.
Ascend Airways Malaysia is part of Dublin-based Avia Solutions Group (ASG), the world's largest ACMI provider, and plays a key role in the group's broader expansion strategy in Asia-Pacific.
The airline has an AOC in Indonesia and plans to add three more AOCs in the region by the end of 2026, with applications already initiated in Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
ASG has over 200 aircraft in its fleet spanning cargo aviation, ground handling, aircraft leasing, and repair and overhaul (MRO) for aircraft and helicopters.

Ensure accountability in deals flagged by A-G, says TI-M
TI-M president Raymon Ram said the Auditor-General's Report must not be 'an annual ritual of regret' but followed by structural reforms. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) has urged the government to ensure accountability after the Auditor-General's Report 2025 flagged issues involving several projects worth hundreds of millions of ringgit. TI-M president Raymon Ram said the report unveiled irregularities and systemic weaknesses in financial management and procurement oversight, necessitating structural reforms. Raymon said such issues were not new and had been repeatedly flagged by the audit department, but they had continued because of outdated procedures, weak oversight and a culture of impunity. 'Where is the accountability for all these lapses? 'The government must take a firm stance and hold the leadership accountable for discrepancies involving public funds. 'These recurring findings highlight institutional weaknesses that demand more than administrative corrections; they require structural reform,' he said in a statement. Raymon said the revelations further erode the confidence of Malaysians in public institutions. The A-G's report flagged serious issues on how more than RM460 million of government funds was spent on land deals, university tenders, and defence contracts between 2020 and 2024, naming Felcra Bhd, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and the army. He urged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police to initiate investigations into these issues to look into the possibility of fraud, abuse of power or negligence. He also called on the relevant government ministries, departments and agencies to disclose the remedial actions they would take within 30 days to show responsibility and ensure public confidence. The government must make it mandatory for independent third-party experts to be roped in to monitor high-risk procurements under 'integrity pacts', involving civil society and professionals from the private sector, he said. Raymon also urged Putrajaya to table a comprehensive public procurement law that outlines transparency standards, penalties for non-compliance and clear procurement dispute mechanisms. 'The A-G's report must not be an annual ritual of regret. 'It must serve as a catalyst for reform, one that rebuilds institutional integrity, ensures justice for wrongdoing and protects the interests of the rakyat,' he said.

GE Vernova to buy France's Alteia for enhancing AI tools for utilities
(Reuters) -Power equipment maker GE Vernova will buy France-based Alteia, which makes artificial intelligence-based tools that allow utility companies to review their grids, it said on Monday. GE Vernova already offers Alteia's software to customers through its GridOS Visual Intelligence. The tool helps utilities assess damage and inspect assets along thousands of miles of electrical lines. The acquisition will enhance this system through visual and operational data, allowing the companies to "see and sense" the grid, GE Vernova said. The company did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, which is expected to close on August 1. GE Vernova has highlighted that growth in its electrification software segment — which includes the GridOS system — could rapidly accelerate, RBC Capital Markets analyst Christopher Dendrinos said. The segment has been growing at mid-single digit percentage rates in the past couple of years, he said. Surging power demand from data centers used for AI and cryptocurrency technologies has boosted GE Vernova, which was spun off from General Electric last year. The power demand is expected to hit an all-time high this year. The company is expected to release its second-quarter earnings report on July 23 before the bell. Johor Bahru bus drivers strike disrupts Singapore commute
JOHOR BAHRU: Private employee Saiful Umar, 37, was among thousands caught off guard when around 100 Malaysian bus drivers operating to Singapore suddenly went on strike early this morning at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI). 'I was shocked, there was no information at all (on a strike),' he said. Passengers arriving as early as 5 am found no bus services, forcing some to walk one to two kilometres across the Johor Causeway to reach workplaces in Singapore. Saiful, who had to walk nearly two kilometres to Woodlands before getting a ride back to Tampoi, expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice. 'This situation is not only inconvenient but also affects our work and image,' he told Bernama. A viral video showed crowds at BSI at 5.30 am due to the halted bus services. Reports suggest the strike stemmed from drivers' dissatisfaction over salary adjustments and allowance cuts, allegedly reducing their monthly pay from RM2,800-RM2,900 to below RM2,000. Another passenger, K. Ramesh, 40, called the situation 'ridiculous,' urging the bus company to resolve the issue swiftly. 'This affects our daily routine and careers,' he said. Bus driver Atoi, 35, confirmed about 100 drivers began striking at 5 am in protest. By evening, services resumed, with no further disruptions observed. Johor Public Works Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh confirmed the incident, having monitored operations with Singapore's LTA and bus operators earlier. – Bernama
