
After the Sabsabi debacle, Creative Australia must learn to embrace controversy
There will be some detractors but I have no doubt that when the work is unveiled next year, all the preconceived fears will be laid to rest.
The question now is: how can Creative Australia rebuild confidence in its role in supporting the visual arts? The report raises some red flags with regard to the selection process for future Venice Biennales – for example, among all the well-intentioned recommendations about risk management, it says the future selection process will need take into account what 'could be so polarising and divisive as to have a material impact on the ability of Creative Australia to discharge effectively its statutory functions'.
This phrase is troubling. As a museum director of many years experience, I am well aware of how hard it is to predict what will stir up controversy. And what is genuine community concern, as opposed to media beat-up? People may be surprised to learn that complaints about content in artworks are rare and usually driven by those who have not seen the work. Creative Australia will have to demonstrate that prejudging what might cause offence does not lead to the bland and the boring.
The report also references the tensions between artistic freedom and Creative Australia's responsibility towards the wider community. I do not believe that there needs to be such a distinction. We should have a funding body that supports artists to make work that is critical and demanding as well as organisations that make the bridge between this work and a wider public, who do have an appetite for contemporary art. The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, where I was once director, became the most visited museum of contemporary art in the world, while putting artists and artistic excellence at its core.
But there is more to be done in the immediate aftermath of this debacle. What we need is strong leadership from Creative Australia in relation to the visual arts.
Why does this matter? It matters because in the age of artificial intelligence, creativity will be a driving force of the future. AI relies on human creativity and educational experts have identified creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and empathy as the skills and qualities that employers of the future will be seeking. These are the very skills that working with art and artists can contribute to society.

We also need support for galleries as we face the challenges of a society dominated by social media. Over a decade ago I sat on a panel discussing the impact of new technology on the arts and a panellist announced that, in future, art would be online and galleries redundant. We would all sit at home viewing art through ever more sophisticated gadgets. It has not happened.
Social media instead can drive audiences to galleries – there is a strong desire for a shared, real experience to combat the world of the virtual. Why do visitors still flock to see works of art such as the Mona Lisa? Online representations are not enough – audiences want the power of the real, often a shared experience. Galleries in Australia and around the world can attest to this interest, especially from young people. Galleries can and still should be safe places for the discussion of difficult issues through the work of artists.
There is now an opportunity for Creative Australia to take the lead and review the ecology of the visual arts across the country and to overcome the perception that it is an agency for the performing arts. We have seen a renewed focus on literature and music, so why not visual arts? It has been more than 20 years since the Australia Council's Myer inquiry into contemporary visual arts and craft, which focused on the organisations it funded, not the whole sector; I have long thought that our regional galleries, for example, play a vital role in engaging audiences with new work. A new strategic framework for the visual arts, with a commitment to respecting peer review in selection processes, could transform Creative Australia's relationship with the sector and restore confidence.
What Australia needs is a visionary federal agency that works closely with all levels of government and other funders, respected for its commitment to artists. Instead of shying away from controversy, a strong agency would embrace it and work to engage the public. Art does matter – if it didn't, why all the recent outrage?

Nik and Kev's gonzo Lions tour adventures continued as they touched down on Australia's east coast. From sleeper trains to presidential suites overlooking Sydney 's Opera House – oh, and stepping into the boxing ring with Sonny Bill Williams – there has been plenty to write home about. Here is what the guys got up to in the second episode of Roar & Uncut, in association with Dr Squatch. MONDAY Ahead of his heavyweight fight against Paul Gallen next week, Sonny Bill Williams put us through our paces at the Opetaia Boxing Club on the Gold Coast. 'Don't worry about technique, this is all about heart,' he told us. After a couple of sweaty rounds on the bags, I agreed to take to take a punch in the guts from one of sport's greatest specimens. Safe to say we earned our fish and chips down at the local seafood market, before bedding down at the Hotel Indigo Brisbane City Centre, by IHG for some well-earned rest. TUESDAY The guys at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary invited us to see some adorable Australian wildlife. There were kangaroos, dingoes, birds of prey and, of course, koalas. Billie Eilish and Pink have taken time to visit the nature hotspot on their world tours so we were in good company. We got up close and personal with a koala as he was feeding on eucalyptus leaves, before dashing back into town for the Lions' captain's run! WEDNESDAY Game day in Brisbane as the Lions maintained their unbeaten run on tour, with a victory over the Queensland Reds. We went for a pre-match run along the banks of the Brisbane River, where new skyscrapers are popping up every month in preparation for the 2031 Olympic Games. THURSDAY Having grown used to the highlife through our partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts, the guys left behind their life of luxury for a night on the sleeper train, travelling from Brisbane to Sydney. Due to strong winds, part of the track was out of action, meaning we spent most of the 600-mile overnight journey on a replacement bus. The travel disruptions meant there was no food left in the buffet carriage but somehow we found a way to get a pizza delivered for a very quick stop on the platform at Coffs Harbour. FRIDAY We arrived at the spectacular InterContinental Sydney, located in the old Treasury building, overlooking the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and the Royal Botanic Gardens. IHG are accommodating the Lions over the next few weeks and their Sydney showstopper has been home to famous guests over the years, such as Angelina Jolie, Cher and Barack Obama. Somehow, we talked their way into the hotel's Presidential Opera Suite, lapping up the five-star grandeur with panoramic views and enjoying our own piano! The team at Destination NSW pulled out all the stops to welcome the travelling media into town, throwing a memorable dinner in the historic Long Bar at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Sydney will stage the Ashes later this year and Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg popped along to remind everyone that England have not won the urn since 2015. SATURDAY Setting their alarms for 6am on a beautiful winter morning, the guys were taken on a sunrise tour of the harbour by the team at Sydney by Kayak. The water shimmered like a mirror under the pink skies; enjoyed with a flat-white out on the water. As well as learning about the famous residents who have lived in the harbour – such Nicole Kidman, John Travolta and Russel Crowe - the guide also showed some of their conversation projects, including the living seawall boulders they have installed to home wildlife. Inside Dannii Minogue's difficult relationship with Julian McMahon's socialite mother and how she wouldn't even let her into her home - as she stays silent on ex-husband's death

Julian, the son of former Australian Prime Minister William McMahon and Sonia, died last week at age 56 after a private battle with cancer. His heartbroken wife, Kelly Paniagua, confirmed the devastating news in an emotional statement on July 4. Years before his relationship with Kelly and his Hollywood breakthrough, Julian was married to his Home and Away co-star and singer Dannii. The pair, who met on the set of the hit soap in the late '80s, wed in 1994 during what was dubbed a 'fairytale' showbiz wedding. 'I never wanted to admit the trouble I was in. I should have been looking at my finances.' Dannii also discussed her difficult relationship with her former mother-in-law in a candid interview on Anh's Brush with Fame in 2019. 'She [Sonia] would not let me go to the family house. Sometimes Julian had to go and collect something and I was waiting in the car out the front,' she said. 'It was as if I'd done something wrong to the family, but I hadn't done anything wrong.' Dannii also revealed how Sonia had initially refused to show up on her wedding day. 'So she did end up coming and was causing a scene… it wasn't the greatest… it was hard. I just tried to stay away from it, I just wanted to enjoy the day,' she said. After his short-lived marriage to Dannii, Julian tied the knot with American actress Brooke Burns, best known for her role in Baywatch, in 1999. The couple welcomed daughter Madison, now 25, the following year, but their marriage collapsed in 2001. Burns, 46, honoured her late ex-husband with a touching Instagram tribute following news of his passing, sharing a sweet photo of Julian with their daughter and writing simply: 'Rest in peace .' But their relationship wasn't without controversy. During their short-lived union, Julian was rumoured to have had a fling with his Charmed co-star Shannen Doherty. The timing of the alleged romance reportedly overlapped with the final season of Doherty's role on the show in 2000-2001. Burns reportedly discovered the affair in the tabloids. 'It was the straw that broke the camel's back,' Burns once told Nicki Swift, later admitting, 'He got carried away by all the Los Angeles hoopla.' Doherty died after a battle with breast cancer in July 2024 - just a year before Julian. Julian praised his ex-wife following their split and described their co-parenting of their daughter as relatively harmonious. 'We just go day by day, basically. Whoever has the most amount of work will not have the child that day or night,' he told Ocean Drive Magazine in 2003. 'It basically stems from the fact that we want our daughter to spend as much time with each parent as she can.' According to reports at the time, the actor popped the question during a romantic trip to Melbourne in late 2013.
