CBI busts transnational cyber extortion syndicate, key operative held
New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): In a continuing crackdown under Operation Chakra-V, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted coordinated search operations at multiple locations in Ahmedabad and Mumbai on June 25 in connection with a transnational cyber extortion case, the probe agency said on Friday.
CBI said that the searches led to the recovery of incriminating evidence. The main suspect behind a transnational cyber extortion syndicate was arrested on June 26 in Mumbai.
'The case pertains to a sophisticated international fraud network involved in cheating foreign nationals, particularly citizens of the United States and Canada, by impersonating government officials, threatening them with false allegations, and subsequently extorting funds. The proceeds of crime were found to be received in form of crypto currencies,' press release said.
'During the operation, the accused was found in possession of a well-organized ecosystem used for committing cyber frauds, which included, telecommunication setup, Pre-drafted scam scripts, Forged identity badges, and ID cards purporting to be of Canadian law enforcement authorities,' it added.
Further, Virtual Digital Assets worth approximately USD 45,000 were seized from the possession of the accused. He was also found to be leading a lavish lifestyle, as evidenced by the recovery of luxury vehicles, high-end accessories, frequent foreign visits and substantial unaccounted wealth, CBI stated.
'Notably, the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had earlier identified the 'Royal Tiger Gang', operated by the accused as a significant Consumer Communication Information Services Threat (C-CIST). The gang is accused of generating and transmitting unlawful robocalls impersonating government agencies, banks, and utility service providers in a systematic manner, aimed at deceiving and defrauding USconsumers,' CBI mentioned.
The accused has been produced before the CBI Court and taken into a 4-day remand for interrogation.
Further investigation is underway. (ANI)

A sea of devotees gathered in Puri on Friday to witness the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra, as Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, embarked on the ceremonial journey from the Shri Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra are being conducted as per schedule amid heightened security arrangements, with coordinated efforts from multiple security forces and district authorities. Speaking to ANI about the arrangements, Puri District Magistrate Siddharth Swain said, '...The yatra route is full of devotees. All rituals related to the Rath Yatra will be conducted on time. Police have been deployed since last night. This time, NDRF has also been deployed... Yesterday, we removed illegal 6-7 drones. Flying of drones over Shri Jagannath Temple and the Gundicha temple is not allowed.' A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been stationed in Puri as a precautionary measure due to the high footfall and scale of the event. NDRF Deputy Commandant Naveen Rana said, "Our personnel are trained to handle all situations, including any medical emergency, structure collapse or any other. We had conducted four mock drills along with the District Administration here." The yatra drew lakhs of devotees, many of whom had travelled from different parts of the country and abroad to to witness the grand chariots of the three deities, Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra, at the Gundicha temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to Jagannath temple. Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi extended a heartfelt welcome to devotees on the occasion of the annual Rath Yatra, urging them to participate with utmost faith and his message, CM Majhi said, 'Join the Rath Yatra with faith and devotion, witness the divine glimpse of Mahaprabhu atop the chariot, and receive His blessings.'

A 67-year-old man, whose last name is Won, has been officially charged in Seoul with allegedly firebombing a moving subway train on May 31, an act prosecutors say was motivated by anger over his divorce. The startling attack, which was caught on recently released surveillance footage, caused serious injury and damage to property. The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office stated that Won is charged with several serious offences, including attempted murder, setting a moving train on fire, and Railway Safety Act violations. Ex-MP from Lakshadweep among three acquitted of charges in illegal fuel import case
A CBI court in Kochi Saturday acquitted former Lakshadweep MP and NCP national general secretary Mohammed Faisal and two others in a case pertaining to causing loss to Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) by illegally importing fuel to the islands. The former MP is the ninth accused in the case, while others are P P Hussain Thangal and Beypore port head clerk Abdul Manaf. Faisal and Thangal are partners of Shebna Enterprises, which had a license to import essential commodities to the Lakshadweep. The case was registered in 2009, and the CBI had charged nine accused in 2011, under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to CBI, misusing the trade licence, the accused availed diesel from BPCL at subsidy rate and sold the fuel in the islands, causing a loss of Rs 1.4 crore for the public sector oil entity. Considering the shortage of essential commodities in the islands, the Kerala government had given a sales tax exemption of 20 per cent for supply to the Lakshadweep. Accordingly, the state had levied only 4 percent tax for items including diesel, to the islands. According to the CBI, diesel meant to Lakshadweep was illegally sold in Kerala itself, and the BPCL had failed to ensure that the supply reached the islands. Earlier, the court had acquitted six others, including BPCL officials. Advocate M J Santhosh appeared for the accused.
